It's a worst case scenario.

I suspect once 10.5.2 ships the floodgates will open.

Tuesday seems like a good day for apple announcements for some odd reason :D

Anyone have any feedback from the developers as to how stable the 10.5.2 seed was ?

This is my first post as I've just ordered my first mac ever after buying the Mrs a macbook for Christmas -

Two 3.2GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeo
2GB (2x1GB)
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
320GB 7200-rpm Serial ATA 3Gb
One 16x SuperDrive
AirPort Extreme Card (Wi-Fi)
APPLE MIGHTY MOUSE
WIRED KYBRD/MAC OS X
Country Kit

So does this mean you are officially waiting for the 8800GT? I am giving in. Going to pick mine up today. Don't need the 512 graphics yet, I will wait and purchase it later down the road. I need my MacPro now, and I'm going to get it.

Place your bets now! Will Darth Raige's next post have him actually with a MP?? Or is he going to psyche himself out again and wait longer? Stay tuned!!

I'm curious why so many people now and before were sooooo concerned about viddy updates. Granted, the cards in the 1st gen MP were super dated, but who games on a Mac and what besides gaming "warrants" the jump from an HD2600 to an 8800GT? Don't get me wrong, the 8800 is a better card, but not worth 4 weeks to me. I build blazing PCs for gaming. And if you're doing "serious" pro vid editing you'll get a Quadro FX 5600 over an 8800 every day of the week. Yes, I'm being a bit of a smart-ass on this subject, but I truly want to understand this Mac Pro / Video card craze. If vid cards are at the top of your entire list... your raison d'etre, your sexual fantasy, then why not build a PC with an EVGA nVidia nForce 780I - SLI and [THREE!!!] 8800GTXs?

I'm switching from a PC and although I wouldn't classify myself as a "gamer" I still like to pootle around in flight sim X on occasion.

With the cash I'm laying down for the mac pro - it'd be stupid not to get the faster card for a bit of future proofing.

Also consider that apple will likely take more and more advantage of the GPU going forward in the OS and apps. GPU's these days are amazingly complex powerful devices - with higher transistor counts than CPU's (ignoring the huge L2 cache) - why not harness that power ?

I also suspect the wait won't be 5 weeks - it's just about when the 10.5.2 update ships.

I figured that's the case for most viddy enthusiasts... and I fully agree. I haven't bought mine yet because Pro Tools isn't compatible with Leopard and Tiger isn't compatible with the new MP. Arggg! I've (we've) waited so long for this update that a month more is cake -- it's easier to wait knowing it's [mostly] already here. Pro Tools should be ready after 10.5.2 comes out and the 8800 will follow so I'll wait.

If the 8800GT is shipping by the time Pro Tools is Leopard ready, I'll totally get it... why not for $200. And I don't see why it would be so hard for Apple to offer even a dual 8800Ultra 768 option for $2k more, BTO, but viddy power is not why I buy a Mac. Maybe it's a sign that some die hard PC users truly are making the switch, or at least exploring the possibility that Apple is not aligned with Satan.

I have just read posts with enraged people saying they will "leave Apple forever" if new cards don't meet their expectations -- as if people have always bought Macs for their badass video cards.

I definitely wouldn't classify myself as a "die hard PC user" - I've spend more time running enterprise databases in various Unix based big iron boxes than anything - Linux was my OS of choice for the desktop for years going that.

Currently at work I'm running SQLServer boxes - so XP pro is my choice there.

It's about what tool is appropriate for the job - at home I'm a hobbyist photographer who shoots 4x5 film - which generates 600mb scans.

OSX appeals and it gives me plenty of options for windows / linux on the same hardware platform - it truly is the one box that can do it all.

Hahaha. Place your bets after 5pm. Question is, will I chicken out when I'm at the Apple Store at 5:30pm? When I do get it, expect me to have my first MacPro post between 8 and 9 EST.

Is it worth it for the 8800?

The only games my fiance and I play are the Sims and Civilization... we don't really do any other 3-D stuff... am I ok with the ATI?

I'm in the club. Waiting for a stock 8-core 2.8Ghz, with the 8800GT. 3rd party RAM and HDD coming later.

But here's why we wait:
It's not a supply issue. It's a software issue. OSX 10.5.2 contains the drivers necessary to run the 8800, that's the cause of the delay. When OSX 10.5.2 is released, the Pros are unleashed.

I think you've got a point about 10.5.2, and it'd be interesting to know what build of OS X comes preinstalled on these Mac Pros - anyone who's already received one want to tell us? But I think there's also likely to be a supply issue. The PC version of the 8800GT has been in short supply since it was introduced at the end of October, and retailers have been able to almost double the prices due to the high demand.

That's exciting! Congrats. While it looks the same, I can't help but request the unbox / set-up photos. Always like to see a new machine.

LG

Unless something has drastically changed in the relationship of the Quadro cards with Final Cut since the last Quadro, I think that you're talking out of something other than your mouth. The Quadro cards offer no incentive to professional video editors; the Quadro series is really only worth the expense if you need the 3D display option or if you're a hardware 3D artist. Even then, I remember reading about a 3D app. specific display error present in the last Quadro card that the Radeon 1900 didn't have.

im sorry but 1.5 gb of video memory is more than incentive for me. ie: believe me hd encoding with a quadro 5600, would blow a crap radeon out of the water. Dont hate Nvidia because they are a better company and have more quality cards.

Slightly annoyed here - the Apple web site doesn't ask for 'name exactly as it appears on your credit card' and as a result my payment was declined. I had to phone and re-order, and it's set back my estimated dispatch date by 2 days...

This is true to a degree. I don't know much about the Quadro, only that it was more expensive than a GTX so I ass-u-med that it was a pro viddy that offered "something" than the 8800 didn't -- whereas gamers will (usually) run two 8800GTXs in SLI and for less money.

Anyway, I game and plan to throw windows onto one of my drives so I'll be getting the 8800GT eventually, if not in my BTO. Pro Tools still is not Leopard compatible and that's my primary use so I am in no rush to jump to a new MP. I'm actually running Pro Tools on my M2N32SLI / FX-62 gaming PC with XP Pro and it runs fine.

I'm waiting. March 7th!!

ordered my MacPro today here are my specs:

3.2GHz Quad-Core intel Xeon (8-Core)
4GB of RAM
Bay (1) 300GB 15,000-rpm SAS
Bay (2) 300GB 15,000-rpm SAS
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB
(2) SuperDrives
AirPort Extreme card (Wi-Fi)

being shipped in 3 weeks

Which card best for 30" display?

I'm about ready to order a 2.8 dual quad and a 30" Apple display. My primary use is Photoshop CS3. Will be adding non-Apple memory to 8MB and additional drives. Is it worth the $ and wait for the 8800 video card if purchasing the 30" monitor?

Did you remember the RAID-card? it is required to drive the SAS drives.
