But MS didn't create the cult like following that Jobs nurtured.

Like the Dead Heads, Apple has a massive group of followers far more dedicated than any others in history. One look at the sales volume, fat margins, and ascent to the worlds richest company proves the power of Apple influence. Being "Cool" has paid off handsomely for Apple.

Problem is, Apple was "cool" because they were the plucky underdog. Now that they're in the mainstream, the cool-factor will slowly diminish and become less special, as will the cult following.

I hope you're right, this delays on desktop side while all attention is for Iphone Leaks doesn't make feel confident.Yes Apple is the greatest company in tech out there, but maybe just for the mobile side and what about desktop sofware?
Pages?Word.-Numbers?Excel.-Logic?Cubase and Sonar not to mention Photoshop,Autocad,3D Max..etc,well you know what i mean.Appz are selling the Iphones this is not the same on desktop productors, there are alternatives and Microsoft is in need to come back to its glory so it will push like a mad on windows 8 ecosystem and this Apple delay is makin them really happy.
I don't know why but this reminds me a lot what happened with Commodore,
they were kings with Amiga...and well you know what happened then, now please don't kill me
because i really loved my Amiga as my Mac,thats why i fear.
Apple please stop this kill.

By the time the iMac releases ivy bridge and the 680m will be one year old and people who won't buy the current one because they refuse to buy 1 year old tech will be waiting again lol.

Really? No iMac until July 2013, and they're still going to use 2012 components?

I swear, where do people come up with this stuff?

YES, we're dying, please Apple, save us! I'm on life support and the only thing that will help me survive is a third generation i5 processor in an aluminum AIO case with an Apple logo on the back. Please!!!!

bleh, i'm dead.

Are you serious? Ugh, a bit melodramatic, aren't we?

Are you saying you'll kill yourself? You do realize it's a computer, right?

No,i'm not,of course i realize its just a pc with Osx in it and Ivy shape outside and no,i'm not gonna kill myself, because(and i'm serious i can document if you need) i'm just after a surgical hearth operation after havin had two heart attack before my real operarion (valve sobstitution due to an anheurisma) so i respect my life,I was,me and my faulty grammar, tryin to stay here and all i say is that i will buy ust an Ivy Bridge Imac and not an outdated Imac because i was really under life support till saturday and i want to give myself a very good hug and gift.so sorry,i apologize having been hard to understand but i'm just an italian in a very hot hospital.
ps.and yes i can write ,my Ipad is a very good companion in those days.
Just one last thing,i really apologize if i hurted anyone,it was easy for me to be angry,
but i will stop following this forum and this threads,we can talk as we want and even if i found this delay so silly,Apple will do as Microsoft did, what it wants.

I am getting tired of always explaining myself to you now hahaha. I meant by the time the current proposed iMacs release it will be 1 year old tech. I also meant it to be a humorous statement :p

I'm new to the Mac world. Having been a pc enthusiast for the last 15 years, it's a whole new world waiting for new tech from apple. I'm used to rumors swirling for 4 months or so before a new hardware launch. Waiting for Mac stuff is kind of demoralizing, there is absolutely nothing to chew on while we wait :(.

Hmm. Seems your particular brand of humor doesn't translate into pixels well.

When you develop Retina iHumor, let me know. ;)

Is there a possibility that the new evolution of imac would be merged with the fabled apple tv?

would that make sense to create a retina imac tv combo. one device that is a beautiful screen yet also a capable slim powerful computer running on wireless input devices.

if making a 27 - retina display would be expensive maybe it makes to merge it with a tv. people already have many flatscreen devices, but there arent really anything specific like two-in-one.
Imac is already a AIO, as far as computers goes.

on the other hand it would mean that an imac would dramatically increase in size in the rages of 32, 40 and 50 and perhaps even 60, but the insane resolutions of those would drive prices to high levels.

I think the Imac is a great product. I just did a ton of research on building a small mini-itx based gaming rig and it's a lot of headaches, compatibility issues and so on.
it made me realize that the iMac is worth its place. it's design is also wonderful. there are lots of other great notebooks, but there are no really awesome pc AIOs. not even from Sony.

I remember we waited 6 months extra for the 2008 imac update. It was worth it.

imacs are also great because despite the notebook terminals, they are constantly plugged in and can draw more power from a bigger power brick, and they are better at exposing heat. if you want to do mean stuff, that is hard on the cpu and the gpu, iMac is a good option.

TVs tend to be lower resolution and larger screen size from computers, and optimized for sitting much further away. I can't see them becoming the same device.

This assertion is about as accurate as any other made here at this point.

There ain't gonna be a refresh in 2012.

Sorry guys but somebody has to say it. The more time that goes by, the more likely to be true this becomes.

Wasn't there a report/rumor it was due to some lamination issue? What if the update was simply meant to be a spec bump, but delayed over a manufacturing problem? It could be as simple as that.

Remember when the iPhone 4S was released in October instead of June like the 4 prior iPhones were?????

Bangs head

Yep. I mean if you check out wikipedia you can see that most of the product cycles are inconsistent (see my FB page in sig,you can see that iMacs were refreshed 3 times in August, probably just coincidence though) with the exception of Pro laptops (PowerBooks and Macbook Pros) and iPhones more recently.

You cant rely on anything with Apple, really.

So basically TV tuner/set top box built-in? I dont think so...you can already use iMac this way.
You are also forgetting that apart from computing, there is not much sense in having retina displays for media consumption. Everything tops out at 1080P which can be handled by the smaller iMac already and increasing pixel count does not improve it in any way.
This 4K content that you read about somewhere (they call it ultra HD now) has been present for few years now but only to post production houses to handle scanned film stock or CGI modelling.
And those facilities are usually running PCs and render farms, even some Mac Pro's. 8K is not unheard of as well. But all this is, and for few ýears to come, out of reach for consumers.
So having retina displays for media consumption doesnt make sense now, it migh be great for gaming once the GPUs get powerful enough.

Why do people feel the need to spout such utter nonsense!? Nobody cares what you think, most of us are happy to wait until it's fact, rather than some numpty trying to make his voice known.

You cared enough about what I thought to bother responding to it. :D

I understand. You just could not help yourself. It's okay. I do care about how you feel.

Again don't feed the troll guys! When the new iMacs comes out in about 55 days im gonna come back to this very threat post a picture with my new iMac just to rub it on @dirtyharry50 face. I'm gonna do this over and over again until I get kickoff or he deletes this thread. If it doesn't happen you can rub it on my face @dirtyharry. Ok?

+1

I can't wait to not come here, unless I have problems with it LOL

So mid October is the latest rumor? At this rate I could just about afford the next Mac Pro when it come out in 2013 :p

Yes the rumor is end of sept.. But most likely earlyoctober. This has been the single rumor about release date which has been there since wwdc. And it comes from an reliable analyst. Problem is that everyone is so inpatient that all sorts of ideas pops up and people get pissed every Tuesday - even though theres been nothing indicating an earlier release and nothing indicating a 2013 release.

let me tell you this. Apple officially stated that the iMac will come before 2013. That's it. Nothing more to it. If Apple lied it would hurt their business a lot so your statement is wrong sorry to say.

No, apple actually stated nothing at all about the iMac, the only thing they did was clarify that when they spoke about a 2013 update they were only talking about the mac pro, at no point did they say the iMac would be released before 2012 or even after. I've been playing the waiting game for this since CHRISTMAS so I am not trolling as a lot of you seem to think anyone who does not think a refresh is coming this year is. I want it as much as the next guy but let's be realistic, there has been absolutely nothing concrete with the possible exception of the benchmark back in April, and even that may not be real, so far it was definitely being refreshed in march... Oh sorry, April. It's been delayed now it's coming may 5th, oh crap, well its gotta be WWDC in June, oops that was just portables, well it will be with mountain lion, that was always the most logical date, wasn't it? Now sept 12 or maybe October. Need I go on? As much as I'd love to gt rid of this near dead 2005 dell laptop I am not going to pay full whack for early 2011 tech, and to be fair, by October (doubtful) ivy bridge will be half way through its life so MAYBE apple are waiting for Haswell since ivy was mainly for portables? Logic will always triumph over hope and despair.

Thanks Dirtyharry - This thread has been rather fun to read

My pleasure. It is fun. We are all so passionate about our toys.

Excellent points and well said. The rumors of a 2012 iMac at this point have all the credibility of the boy who cried wolf as you've pointed out.

DirtyHarry is in fact a troll. Someone else correctly pointed out that Apple top brass made it a point to correct an interview article that implied that the imac refresh would be along in 2013 with the mac pro; saying that only the mac pro would have to wait until 2013. That's more specific information than for almost anything else they release.

So yes, whatever else someone else wants to say about rumors being all right/wrong, that is some "different" data for the mix.

He's actually being a pretty bad troll, if you look at it. He's unabashedly gloating in riling people up, oversimplifying opposing arguments to further entice, etc. Real trolling requires more subtlety.
