that would be impressive if they had shown that. They didn't according to this report (which has an attached press release).

http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/31/sharps-igzo-low-power-high-res-display-technology-gets-its-tim/

( sharp's own press release from their website the story is based on
http://www.sharp.eu/cps/rde/xchg/eu/hs.xsl/-/html/fascinating-brilliance-due-to-new-displays.htm )

The 2560x1600 display is 10" not 6.1". There is no 6.1". (which makes tons of sense since the 7" tablets are hot right now). The only thing on target there is the 32" , 4K (UHDTV) screen.

I found a screwed up PCWorld story with the reassigned 10" resolution but that is clearly flawed reporting.

The other problem if watch the associated video is the Sharp representative says 2013 for the screens. So the likelihood for a 2012 iMac (or any other Mac this year ) is rather small.

Perhaps a 2013 Apple TV with the 32" UHDTV screen. Maybe a UHDTV iMac to match and get the "panels sold" numbers up.

Clearly, for immediate future, the answer is no. IGZO doesn't make it easier to make the screen. It is easier, less power, to backlight it. But the panel density itself isn't radically different. Packing extremely high pixel density over a relatively very large screen is going to present problems in terms of affordability. The yield isn't going to be good (especially at A+, "zero defects" quality) which will make the price high.

Here is an image of the 31.5" IGZO 3840x2160 monitor I was talking about. It was in an IFA report, so I had assumed it was shown there.

The website where I saw this also mentioned 6.1".

http://www.hardwarezone.com.sg/feature-sharp-wants-change-your-world-igzo-icc-technologies

The following website describes the CAAC crystal structure that allows higher resolution. Note that this is from before the IFA show, and that 6.1" is a size that Sharp have demonstrated, not one that they have announced mass production for.

Well lets see it this way:

On one hand we have:
Kuo - reliable analysts - mentioning screen lamination issues etc. Predicting new imacs in fall, and restating his prediction very close to the supposed release
that blogger - from ages ago who made a prediction about retina then said nevermind, but they will come fall.
Digitimes - citing "upchain supplier" for a fall release
Tim cook- correcting the 2013 MP statement, by excluding the mention of the iMac
Supply shortage at Apple resellers and delays in both standard and BTO configs
Benchmarks of new iMac model numbers before wwdc
Rumors of not 1 but 2 keynotes this fall

On the other hand we have Dirty harry:
He says : Na' aahh!!! My thoughts are equal to all of the above, and I say no there shan't be a 2012 iMac. And I base this on the fact that apple has NOT anounced a 2012 iMac (although Apple never anounces products before release)

Basically hes saying, his argument is statiscally equally valid as the yay sayers.

According to that logic, winning the lottery is a 50/50 game. Because, either you win (50% chance), or you don't win (50%). Since you can't be certain of either outcome, both are equally likely.

Henceforth ladies and gents, always buy 2 lottery tickets, to be 100% certain you win..... Or will it be 100% certain to lose? Maybe Dirty Harry can clear this up for us.

You won't be able to buy an "all loaded up" 2011 iMac if and when the new models are released. There will only be standard configured 2011 iMac models selling at about the price of the Apple refurbished 2011 iMacs that are now available at the Apple store.

Thanks for the info. This is probably the worst time to buy one since they could be right around the corner, but I do need the i7 with the 2gb video card, so I should probably buy soon.

It's just a question of what kind of a processor bump there will be and how much better the new video card options will be. You can already fit 32gb of RAM in the current models so they really can't improve on that, besides 64gb, but that's ridiculous RAM.

Based on available components that fit Apple's normal criteria, expect a 10-15% CPU bump and an 80-100% GPU bump across the board. All of the candidate GPUs come with 2 GB VRAM minimum. You won't need more than that unless they shock us and put out a 4K screen.

Just 117 days left for this thread to get resolved one way or the other:)

So with this you could watch 4x full HD images at once! WOW but 31.5" might be a bit big for most users on there desktop.

So each GPU Apple chooses to use for the next-gen iMacs will have a minimum of 2GB VRAM across the board? Would be awesome if that happens! :D But surely they could also utilize the 1GB VRAM variants of the GTX GPUs? With the exception of the HD 6970, I wondered as to why Apple was frugal and stupid enough to configure the 2011 iMacs with AMD GPUs with a paltry 512MB VRAM? Surely they realize iMac users crave power, and to configure such machines with such low-class GPUs was careless and utterly moronic on their part. This is mainly the reason why I haven't plunged and bought the 2011 iMacs. I look forward to the massive performance gains of the Nvidia GTX GPUs, which is presumably what Apple will be stocking their 2012 iMacs with. I cannot take this ******** wait any longer!!! Apple needs to hurry up and release these machines already, getting tired of staring at the 11" screen of my MBA :( Don't get me a wrong, it's a fantastic machine but it's no replacement for an iMac. I'm really close to pulling the trigger on a rMBP and the delay is only fueling this insidious temptation!

If I was you I would wait until after Sept 12 just in case there is info released then about new iMacs. I think you were originally waiting until an update in order to get cheaper 2011 models. When they do an update you generally get higher specs for the same price which amounts to much the same thing. It is a pity about all the uncertainty because it would of course be far easier to choose what to do if you knew when the updates were coming.

Any chance Apple could sneak in the iMac update along with the new iPhone next week?

I think it would be to much (if its true that they are also releasing 3 new iPods..)
So probably the iMacs will share the stage in oct at the iPad mini event even if its only a silent spec bump.

But I hope Im wrong and they are coming earlier :D

Actually I hope there isn't a release in 2012 now, not because I'm perverse or sadistic etc. If there isn't, I would just like everyone to take a look back at all the ridiculous "is it going to be released today, this week, this month, this hour, this minute threads there have been. I can only conclude the world has gone totally mad.

Well after finished reading that, I can only conclude that on the contrary, you are indeed either perverse or sadistic. :p
