It looks slightly bigger to me, but maybe thats because the bezel shrunk :)

I'm pretty sure that the difference isn't noticeable unless you have the devices side by side. It likely only changed because the new panels with the higher resolution could not be produced with exactly the same dimensions. I guess we'll know for sure when Apple releases the tech specs in a couple months.

Yeah, probably.

I will actually LOL if this is nothing like the real thing.

is it me or do people love posting small images of stuff like this. i mean most cameras are able to capture 1024x800 images and the ones that are posted are no bigger than a big emoticon.

I blame the camera manufactures for making Vaseline covered lenses and imagine destabilization so popular, I mean between internet spy shots, Bigfoot, other monsters and UFOs it's just not fair of them to put out such cameras.

There's Still Another Prototype iPhone in the Wild

"Clever girl"

:D Funny you mention that, because I work for the government.

So you mean to tell me Apple would stake the possibility of loosing 2 months worth of sales just to test something they won't release? Once again, not very apple like.

Everyone I've found that feels the need to boast that "they work for the government" ends up being a cube / desk worker that files papers and sends emails to the important people higher up. (Not to say you're not important - I don't flame.) - and what do you mean lose 2 months of sales? The iPhone comes out in June / July, and this year, it will still be June / July, regardless of what prototypes they have.

Seriously though, do you also mean to tell me that that companies don't test anything they don't intend on releasing, and that everything tested gets released? You'd be foolish to say that. (Examples; Newton Tablets and, so far, the iProd.)

Personally, I think this isn't the exact form factor -- This whole thing reminds me of when the original iphone was being created and the guts of the thing were brought to the software developers in a box with just the wires that they needed sticking out to connect to their computer/SDK. Just enough to get things done but not enough information to really understand what they were working with.

Obviously times have laxed quite a bit, but the job that needed to be done (testing in the wild), I believe, was conducted with a phone that was just enough to get the job done. I'm not saying this phone isn't similar, but I think we'll see quite a bit more fit and finish. The metal will certainly be polished to a high sheen like the currently frame that's sported on every iPhone in creation. I think the black back and front sandwiching this high polished silver will look amazing. The dull look now is not what we'll see in June.

China has a better and cheaper workforce. Get used to it. We in Britain are over the fact we are no longer the worlds super power/industrial capital. We lost that status to the USA. You have lost it to china. Get over it.

No offense to the UK, but you lost both of those colonies. We still have the resources, just not the leaders.

I agree with your comments and saying something similar today.

While I don't have a problem with the design being shown, its not necessarily the final product.

The actual components might not change, but they may be put in to a different shell

As someone that works with engineering ceramics...

1. The back is definitely zirconium oxide ceramic

2. Zirconium oxide is very hard and as ceramics goes is very tough. It is also very rigid to to high tensile strength.

3. With a glass front and ceramic back, the companies selling various phone protection products are probly going to lose out

4. It seems inevitable that a 4g iPod touch will share these same design features.

Well, if I had to choose between the two prototypes, I think I'd pick the earlier version (without the screws near the dock connector). It looks cleaner.

I wonder if the flatness is dictated by the "glass" back. Maybe it couldn't be molded into a curve. Or as others have noted, perhaps they needed to use every millimeter of space inside the phone.

I really do like the curve of the current model. Then again, I thought the aluminum keyboards would be really uncomfortable to work with but now I love them. I've gradually learned not to second-guess Apple. They usually know what they're doing.

Umm... it's aluminum. You know, the dull looking metal that's used as the main body material on...

Mac Pro
iMac
Mac Mini
MacBook Pro
MacBook Air
XServe
Apple Cinema Display 30"
Apple LED Cinema Display 24"
iPad
iPod Nano
iPod Classic
iPod Shuffle
iPhone 2.5G
Apple TV
Apple Remote
Magic Mouse
Apple Keyboard
Apple Wireless Keyboard

Or, to put it simpler, every current hardware product from Apple except Time Capsule, AirPort Extreme, MacBook and iPhone 3GS.

The metal you're referring to is the chrome bezel on previous iPhone models. Chrome has been phased out of Apple's product line on everything except the soon-to-be-retired iPhone 3G/3GS; they used to have it on the back of iPods up until 2005 which is probably why they put it on iPhones.

The only product left still sporting the polished metal look after the new iPhone has been released will be the iPod Touch, but I imagine they'll squash that anomaly like a roach by releasing a new model in time for the next holiday seasons.

I agree. Polished look is for Glee fans, Always hated that stupid bling look on the iPhone. The new phone mimics the rest of the Mac line up now. Done.

Theory?

Is it possible that, whether a prototype or planned design, the phone has been doing the rounds with manufacturers in Asia and in true style a fake model has already been copied? Would explain the minor differences including the absence of the Apple logo on the back.

I've got another one. I almost left it at Kate Beckinsale's house last night. She has some exquisite satin sheets, I tell ya what.

iphone-next.jpg

The bezel is too thick and Kate's elbows are too pointy.

I like the new iPhone, it's basically bazel-less, the whole front is a screen.

Yup, and I'm thinking that's the strategy here. I think Apple have started to feel that the cases and skins are tarnishing the iPhone brand. Since a majority are using them, they've become intimately associated with the iPhone, and some of these cases are **** ugly. Huge green/pink rubber thingies that make the phone twice as thick as it should be. It's not really healthy for the brand if people start to associate the iPhone with a mental image of a big rubber brick. And what good is nice industrial design when it's always hidden by ugly wrapping? It's as if Heidi Klum would always have a paper bag over her head in all photos.

By removing the scratch-prone plastic back and chrome bezel, switching to zirconium and an aluminum unibody chassis of sorts, plus flattening the back, the phone will be more rugged and scratch-resistant and feel more sturdy.

Of course this won't stop paranoid gadget freaks from still hiding their precious iPhones inside hideous skins, but at least it will boost the number of naked iPhones quite a bit, so it's a start.

Results of Apple's testing

Apple's testing has revealed that the new ceramic back of it's iPhone 4G has such a low coefficient of friction that users need to be careful that the phone doesn't slip out of their pockets when they sit down. ;)

The more I look at the Giz and these photos, the more I think there is a ton of wasted real estate on the front of the iPhone that could be used for a larger screen. :(

What's the difference between that and the 3gs back? The 3gs feels slick to me.
