"self-report privacy information" - this is a problem if it isn't automatically enforced too. Perhaps Google is wondering how much they can fudge and how much will be detected if they do so.

* And I say "fudge" to be charitable and not use "lie"
You are not necessarily wrong but Apple cannot do the check for every app themselves, that would literally take years.

But I don't think Google would risk it, they know that if they anger Apple they will lose their Apple Developer Membership - even if it's temporary that would hurt them. Chaos ensued at Facebook HQ after they lost their access back in 2019.

Apple doesn’t need to. You know there are going to be a ton of people just waiting to spot check on google the same way they did with Facebook.

I think a lot of the efficacy of privacy labels will have to come from community policing. We are all going to have to be part of the change we want to see.

ominous and nefarious at the same time.

I know on the Mac I object to some things google wants:
1) full disk access for updater
2) automation for system events for updater
3) accessibility control your computer for updater
4) camera and microphone for chrome
5) bluetooth for Chrome

Which hey, maybe they all need (except I turned access off and things are working just fine). suspicious much?

I honestly doubt the general consumer even gives a ****.
Generally true but I suspect people are slowly becoming aware and distrustful as more and more things are bright to their attention. Still, it won’t change much until something big happens that affects them like the Equifax disaster a few years ago.

If this isn't a matter of Apps still being in review and revision, Google should be booted from the App Store until such time they are in compliance in every regard.

Apple doesn't have the tech guts to be consistent with Google.

Considering how the vast majority of people won’t notice, or even care, they might as well go ahead and get it over with. The longer they hold out, the more attention they draw to it.
Came here to say exactly this haha. As loud as many of the commenters are in these tech forums, I sadly don’t think the mass public will notice/care because the trade off of convenience is just too great.

but yes, the longer they hold out the more clickbait articles will come out pointing their fingers at Google. Which would allow more “commonfolk” to get wind of it. Not to mention the DOJ who are currently suing Google over antitrust issues.. haha

It is definitely unusual how long it's been since they updated their apps. You'd usually see Google apps updating on a near-daily basis, but it's been many weeks at this point.

Of course they say there is no connection to the privacy labels and their slow updates, but their update history doesn't agree with that statement. Probably just adding as much time between nutrition label launch and their update hoping it will be ignored.
They never said there is no connection. They just never gave an explanation.

Unfortunately I think we have seen that case with Facebook. I think that people seriously just don't care.
Yep. Google is actually very careful with user data, but they might as well not be cause nearly nobody cares, and those who do will criticize them no matter what. These privacy features seem entirely driven by geeks and not average people's desires.

I'm sick of clicking/scrolling through all that meaningless privacy agreement stuff; wish there were a universal "just take whatever data I give you, sell it even, idgaf" button. Even if I cared and wanted to read through it, I'd not trust what they say about their closed-source clients and hidden away backends. Mic/camera/etc permissions are true security, a different matter, and I'm glad for them. If I want privacy, I use something provable like Signal or my own project.

Updates can't be sent to review without the privacy labels, but the privacy labels don't need any review and can be modified whenever you want. Google is actively avoiding publishing them until the very last minute

Maybe Google will keep all of their iOS apps that way, so that Android users (Google milk cows) can proudly claim that iPhone apps are ALL years behind.

I wonder if Google's going to get WhatsApp'd?
I highly doubt it, because people don't even know their free iCloud account comes with an email address. Unlike Gmail, iCloud emails even come with support when you don't know how to do something. Pretty much everyone uses Gmail for email accounts.

I use my iCloud email for everything, and my email address still ends in @Mac.com, and I will not have anything to do with, and refuse to use Gmail. I have never had a Gmail account, and never wanted one. I remembered the whole 1GB free thing they did with the invites, and of course, even back then they said they had bots crawling through your email and showed ads. Back then nobody cared, and nobody will care, or they will only pretend to care now. I saw this from years ago, and still refuse to this day to use a Gmail account.

The thing that is ultra scary is that many businesses use Gmail (not G Suite, but a run of the mill Gmail account) which can contain private client information, such as a small doctors office, or lawyers office.

If this isn't reason enough to wean yourself off Google products as soon as possible I don't know what is. There are great replacements for almost all google services. With the exception of YouTube, to which you can do as I do, and create a Google account exclusively for YouTube (and nothing else) using a non-google email.

That is exactly what I have done. I have used my main Apple email address though, and now I am wondering if I should have created a throwaway instead.
