I hate safe sleep. Even though I open Terminal and enter the commands to disable it, safe sleep always turns itself back on. I don't want it, I don't need it. Waiting thirty seconds for my notebook to go to sleep is ridiculous and unnecessary. Plus, the 4 GB of wasted disk space is something I want returned. I'm low on space as it is. Writing memory contents to the disk is fine if I'm on a plane swapping out batteries, but I want to be able to turn it off permanently because I don't do that.

Get InsomniaX

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/22211

It's a program that, while running, does not allow the computer to go to sleep. This can allow you to close the lid of your laptop, and the computer will remain awake.

I have mine load at startup. If I do actually want my computer to sleep for some reason, I just turn off InsomniaX. Most of the time when I close the lid, I don't actually want the computer to sleep, so that's why I load the program at startup.

windows switchers...
I hate how they act like the windows way to do things is superior. zoom button issue, zip folders, application installation, ect.

Let's not group us *all* together now :)

I found getting around OS X a little weird at first too, but after a week I was pretty comfortable with the way a Mac works, and I for one don't plan on switching back, cos it's just not worth the headache :)

While I appreciate the link, that is not exactly what I am ranting about. It's not that I want to keep the computer running 24/7, I just want to disable safe sleep, not the whole sleep function altogether.

Safe sleep simply means when you select "sleep" from the drop down menu, the computer will write your RAM's contents to the disk in case of a power loss. Great if I'm swapping out batteries on a plane, like I said earlier because I could yank the battery out after sleeping, and reboot to resume where I left off. The problem is it takes 30 seconds to actually put the machine to sleep and I never leave anything open when I sleep + the wasted 4 GB of disk space is something I need back.

Maybe move a few pornos off your main HD, its not optimal to be running such a full HD anyway. Sounds like you need that program or a cron job to run your command. You might miss deep sleep if you lose something important. Me personally, I think its a brilliant feature and one of the good reasons for having a Mac is tight integration between h/w & s/w that works so well.

"Totally overpriced"
:p
Of course they still are. cheapest macbook starts at $1099, (im using only this one, same applies for others too!). Now for that much money, I can buy a better spec'd NON-APPLE machine. Dell offers 640GB (320x2 gb), 3gb ram, dvd burner and 2.0ghz processor for that price! what does apple give you for the same price? 2.1ghz processor, 1gb ram, 120gb hd, cd-rw/dvd-rom.

"That Apple choose to limit their OS to their own hardware, and that they limit their software to their hardware."

I'm VERY thankful they were wise enough to do that. Otherwise... they'd be gone. And if they ever make the mistake of opening the OS to other hardware, they'll be gone. But I think there will be a long line of grownups running Apple after Jobs is gone, so no fear.
is it wise or being in control? forcing consumers to have the one and only source?

I don't think your inability to remember keyboard shortcuts is a shortcoming of an OS. Just like many users inability to learn their OS isn't. If you think Windows does keyboard navigation better than to each his own, but understand that it's simply and opinion, and should be stated as such.
not many are heavy keyboard users as myself. in my experience, i find mac osx to be VERY mouse centric, it's not as keyboard friendly as other operating systems like Windows or linux.

WHY? Because there are UNDERLINED letters that tells okay, press alt or option + this key to do this. its absent on osx. it's like you have to MEMORIZE pretty much every shortcuts whereas in windows you can SEE it in case you don't remember. i can do nearly 90% of the work without having to use the mouse so much. but on osx, i have to keep one hand on the mouse nearly all the time.

if you disagree with me, try this simple exercise.
i had osx crash on me. don't know exactly why. unlike the popular myth, it does crash! anyway, my mouse stopped responding, it moved but wouldn't click on anything. had TextEditor opened. what do i do? wanted to restart. great. not bad. I pressed CTRL + EJECT, nice, i can now restart. now the problem. it won't restart because texteditor was open. so i go back to editor and pressed apple+q, and there's the problem.

Don't save, Cancel and SAve are options with save highlighted. I DON"T WANT TO SAVE. i just wanna close it. while ctrl+q showed the options, you CANT navigate between them! you HAVE to save it. now you'll say what's the big deal about saving the doc and close it? you see, its a matter of principle! i want my computer to DO AS I instruct it. I don't want to compromise.

then i had to open terminal and force close it.

let me know if there's way to navgiate between option on texteditor .
thanks.

Because you don't have safe sleep enabled. I keep disabling mine and it sleeps fast, but whenever I restart I have to enter that command again to disable.

Sounds like you should make a script that will run at startup ;)

Hahahaha! Here's a trick I learned:

The solid-highlighted button will be chosen if you press "Enter." The outline-highlighted button will be chosen if you press "Space."

I tried your exercise. "Don't Save" (at the left) was outlined, and "Save" was solid-highlighted. I hit Space and it quit without saving ;)

And if you wanted to choose an option in between which has no highlight whatsoever by default (in this case, "Cancel"), you may use Tab to move the outline-highlight and then press Space to execute it.

This is just further proof that no two OSs are the same, and that you have to learn the tricks in OSX just like you have to learn the tricks in windows. You weren't born knowing all the tricks in windows.

hi gunner, thanks for ur post. i know exactly what you're talking about. i did get that kind of options and was able use the TAB, space key somewhere else. but i'm not seeing any outlined options in texteditor. i can give u a screenshot. i only get "save" selected in solid blue. but in general, not many dialog boxes had that kind of "outline" . someone told me usually just the first letter of the option works, but it really doesn't.

i'm using leopard, and mac keyboard.

the escape key should cancel it.

Uh... I actually JUST tried that. I'm using Leopard as well. Are you absolutely sure about what you posted? Because when I just tried to make a screenshot using Grab, the highlight also disappeared. Hitting Tab brought the highlight back, whereupon I could move through the buttons and then hit Space to choose my selection.

After a bit of fiddling, I was able to capture a shot where the highlight was on the buttons. As you can see, there is an outline-highlight around "Don't Save."

the escape key should cancel it.

That should cancel, but then it wouldn't carry out the "Quit" if the goal was to quit the program without saving.

Allow full keyboard access for all controls in the Keyboard Shortcuts tab of the Keyboard & Mouse preference pane.

yes!

that was it. THANKs to you and gunner. full access wasn't enabled on mine, thats why my screenshot wasn't matching to thgunners.

now i have to find something else to whine about. ;)

This really should be enabled by default on OSX.

Here's one..

I don't like how clicking on a menu separator collapses the menu. Obviously, there's nothing to choose there, it's a separator for cryin' out loud. It's not a menu option - don't treat it like one - it's a decoration and should be treated as such.

That and I have to agree with the lack of keyboard command options with regard to activating any of the menus in the WinWorld via Alt+Letter. Makes memorizing the CTRL, META, ALT shortcuts easier.

*sigh*

With all the other cool stuff available to or on the macs, though, I consider these things minor annoyances.

Am a newly converted PC user, and love the MBP -- just a few things..

- thas one GIGANTIC mouse button -- why not split it into 2?
- a backspace key wouldn't hurt..
- I know there are shortcuts for home, end, and such.. but why not have real keys? So much space on the keyboard!
- a memory card slot!

just a few things -- but do love my new Mac!

1) This was discussed a few pages back in this thread.
2) The backspace hey is there. Look right above Return key.
4) Which one? I'm sure if they included one for, say, SD cards a lot of people would complain about it being unnecessary to them as they have different card type or dont need it altogether. My friend with an Asus laptop has SD card reader built-in, but we need CF so its useless there (for us) taking space and an extra hole in the laptop never makes it pretty.

Okay, here's one. I hate the way Macs are reliant on Quicktime.

I want to be able to drag native files such as MXF's from XDCAM discs straight onto the timeline without having to rewrap to the .mov format.

If someone gives me a hard disc full of MXF files to edit with, it means that I have to use double the disc space to store the rewrapped .mov versions of the files. How hard can it be to program a NLE to just read the files as is?! Most PC programs, particularly Vegas manage this.

It is my only real true gripe with Macs that I really wish they would change.

In Vegas, if someone wants me to edit a demo reel for them and they hand me a DVD disc with their footage on, I can drag the VOB file straight onto the timeline with Vegas. Not so with FCP because it needs the damn .mov format.

Sort it out Apple!

Rev A faults, I tend to buy rev A machines and I can't afford to lose the machine for the time it'd take to fix the issues so I tend just to live with them or repair them myself.
