Acronym are you here to have an intelligent conversation or are you here to be a troll?

Post scriptum: your youtube video link is dead.

the video works fine, so if a post is "uninteligent" by your standards or the forums standards then i am a troll? the video somewhat backs up my arguements and if people missed it i wanted to make sure they saw it.

not trying to be rude here but one of the main things that bugs the heck out of me on forums is the lack of freedom of speech.

anyways i personaly dont like macs and you personaly dont like windows so we share different views no need to continue arguing about whos "ego" is bigger and better

Actually the switch to Intel was forced because Motorola finally came to their senses and realized, "Hey, we're spending a ton of capital keeping this one huge fab plant open and only one customer for the CPUs we're making: Apple. They'll never do much better than they're doing, and we're starting to make bazillions from cellphones, so that's where our focus needs to point."

And so it was, from the coffers of Motorola on a day way back in 1997 that the decision was handed down to spread the word that they were simply going to stop making CPUs for desktop computers - any desktop computers, and that left Apple standing with their talleywackers just a-swingin' in the wind. Of course, Intel was waiting with open arms, and the rest as they say is now computer history.

Actually apple went to IBM after motorola. You know... the whole G5 and whatnot...

Also the fab could be used to make processors for cell phones (funnily enough fabs can be used to make more than one thing). So you are wrong on that count too.

Motorola just changed what type of device they were aiming at and the G4 was much too big for the lucrative cell phone/embedded market they wanted to enter.

not trying to be rude here but one of the main things that bugs the heck out of me on forums is the lack of freedom of speech.

there is no such thing as 'freedom of speech' on a privately owned and operated forum. if the owner said that we could be banned for saying 'microsoft' ... well its his/her board and they can do what they want with it, you're only freedom here is to obey the rules set forth, and that you agreed to when you joined.

and if you hate macs so much, i really don't understand why you're posting on a forum dedicated to them.

But after reading all that is posted here, I would say the Mac is not any better. If a PC is is built for the user, with quality parts, you shouldn't have any issues.

That's definitely NOT true about "not having any issues." Every computer, if it is used extensively by someone who does "a lot" with computers, WILL have some sort of problem pop up. There will ALWAYS be something. I can't call people liars if they claim their XP system or Mac OS system has run for 4 years with NEVER ONE SINGLE PROBLEM, but I don't personally believe them. That's my choice not to believe it, based on my experiences and what I know about computers.

Most of the complaints here are NOT computer "problems," but things that people wish were different about how the Mac operates. There aren't many things to list, but there are always a few things people want different, and then there are always people who don't want it different... they like it the way it is! Can't have it both ways, can we?

I've run a lot of PCs in my days... used them exclusively since DOS 6.x and Windows 3.11 for over a decade. NEVER had a system that ran as well as I thought it should, until I got my iBook. Not flawless by any means, but it ran as well as I felt a machine should.

Acronym, I think most of us wouldn't mind hearing your objections to the Mac OS, but that's not exactly what you're doing. Your behavior does seem a bit like a troll, some of the "hit and run" comments and whatnot.

That video, btw, is really a horrible attempt to bash Macs. I saw it two years ago, and couldn't relate to anything he was saying... and I was using a Mac! A lot of what he says is just talk, nothing technical or significant. For example, "You have to sneak up on it, trick it into doing what you want." What does that mean? Seriously, it seems they didn't have sufficient content to bring up, so they embellished what little they had.

If I were to make a video about Windows, I could go on with solid content for approximately 10 minutes at least. I wouldn't need to use figurative speech and speak in generic terms; I could be very specific and precise.

So, we'd love to hear your specific issues with Mac OS X. That's the purpose of the thread... this is not a Mac vs PC thread, it's about things you don't like about the Mac OS.

We're listening ;)

Same thing goes in real life.

If you go up to your boss, or a teacher and hurl abuse at them then you're going to get fired or excluded.

Freedom of Speech needs to have it's restrictions (i.e. following the rules set by a higher authority; the admins in this case) otherwise the world would have even more rude, obnoxious people who think that they can get away with murder just because they aren't technically breaking any laws by using their mouths to abuse people.

[To Acronym] Why are you even here if you don't like Macs? Dumb troll. Go back to your cave. There is no food for you here. At the end of the day, the joke is really on you because you had to sign up for an account to troll, and probably even create a fake email account so you wouldn't be sent emails from the admins, and so on, on your main email account. We already had accounts, and we're here posting because that's what we do anyway. Responding to you is taking up not extra time than responding to any other person in another thread. No time of ours wasted.

And if you're not a troll, I apologize but you're behaving in a manner that is really implying you are =\
Plus you don't even like Macs so it's not like really have any other reason to be here, as this is a Mac specialist site...

i post on these forums mostly in the ipod touch and "itunes and ipod" forums being as i own a ipod touch that really is the only reason i come to these forums is for my ipod touch questions

i simply dont like the way a mac operates i have had the privlage of operating macs in there early years and some of the newer ones and didnt like them fact is when using an I-mac for video editing it would unexpectedly crash and or freeze causing me to lose all the work i had done had i not saved recently, and i also found the mac's "windows explorer" to be annoying and not to easy to use. i also dont like the keybaord layout and its shortcut style (ie Command C or apple C to copy) these just some of the reasons i prefer windows over mac.

but there are some progams for mac that i wish would become available to PC Photobooth and garageband

[To BlakTomado] your right i shouldnt really be here being as i dont own a mac but i do own an ipod touch and unfourtunatley i need help with technical stuff so i come here for that reason

Mac systems before OS X are not something I would have wanted to use, to be honest. In fact, I didn't... when I did have to use them, it was usually at the school that I taught at, because Apple nearly gave them away to education institutions... but they were old crappy ones. It didn't help that I was comparing it to a nice, fast XP system at home, versus this old, outdated, ancient piece of hardware.

But your comment about the shortcut keys doesn't make much sense. Why do you dislike using CMD-C/V instead of CTRL-C/V ? CTRL-C is harder to press than CMD-C, depending on your hand size. Besides, it really doesn't seem to be of any real significance whether it's one or the other.. it's probably just your preference for what you know coming through. Any Mac user could just as easily complain about the shortcut keys on Windows.

As for the Mac Finder (equivalent of Windows Explorer), it doesn't have the full functionality of the Windows equivalent, that's true. However, I, as a power-user, find very little frustration using the Finder... I actually prefer it now. Every now and then it's frustrating that I don't know where I am in the directory tree, but other than that, it works just fine. Just wish fiddling with hidden files was easier in OS X.

I hope Apple makes some changes -- perhaps just having the menu bar follow the application to different displays would do it. Or have the menu bar duplicated on all displays.

You know, I never noticed this until you posted it. It is annoying. lol

Just got an Imac 24"

I have been messing around with this thing for two weeks, and basically am totally fed up.

With windows, if I want to do something I just click it, right click it, explore a little and HOW to do what I want becomes obvious in a few seconds. With Mac it seems it is impossible to do so many simple, obvious things. And the fact that it's not immediatly apparent how is infuriating. (like, why the heck can't I get into and navigate the menus w/o my mouse?) Also the mac help is a total joke. I go there looking for hints with hotkey navigation and such and all I get is a list of features. Hey, I can see the computer I SEE the features already, I don't need it repeated in list form.

I know part of my problem is that windows interface has become intuitive to ME over time. But it's so much easier, with the wider range of immediate access to options (right click, alt-(hotkey) combos, etc.) to discover new ways of doing things faster.

Also, have had just as many software bugs and random shutdowns in the first two weeks as with any PC. It seems Mac's aqueaky clean image has less to do with product purity and more to do with having so little market share that no-one wants to write lame software for the platform. More than a few third party apps have crashed when I try and use them. I know this isn't mac's fault, but if I were running windows, there'd be a fix already.

My favourite two things so far about my new mac has been that it is different and refreshing (far from better), and Bootcamp. Bootcamp was so easy to use, Now I have Windows again.....

Also, you mac guys need to chill. Combine your preachy, defensive attitude with the smarmy commercials and smug public image and you're ruining Mac's branding. I get the same attitude, whether it's customer support, or your responses on this forum. makes me want to hang up the phone.

omg dude chill !!

You've probably been using apps that were not patched for Leopard yet. The only app crash I had in months is Adium a couple of days ago, but that was in a rather untypical situation.

You've said yourself that "Windows-way" has become natural to you. If you really want to learn something new, you've got to open your mind and start seeing positive things. No wonder you didn't succeed. Why buy a Mac if you want to use it like a PC?

There's nothing I really HATE about OS X. I do have a few minor annoyances, however:

No Cut+Paste in the Finder.
Bad sorting in Spotlight. (in Leopard)
Inconsistent Green button.

Might be very helpful to you. It has all the keyboard shortcuts available in OS X, including many for navigating the menus with a keyboard. Many of the things that were in the right-click menu in Windows are available here. It takes a little bit of time to memorize them, but once you do, you'll be blazing through OS X even faster than you were through Windows.

Hmm, interesting, and yet you switched from Windows and bought a Mac.....WHY?

Why did I switch?

I dunno. I needed a new computer, the I-macs look super slick and I really want to see what all the fuss is about. Also I need to buy a new CAD program and I wanted to expand my options. From what I've been able to discern about file management, the lack of a windows style registry, the general glitz and snappyness, I like. Ironically, Windows was in many ways easier to install on the mac. Heck I dare say it WAS. And that's including a drive partition, super sweet. Now I have a computer half and half.

It's just that with windows there are countless tiny little customizations right at your fingertips that are just not made available. Why make it hard?

File associations, navigation tricks, folder tree displays, less sparse and superficial options menus, the list goes on.

I am totally down to learn and have been coming to this forum daily to get tips, but I really think windows basic usability may be better. Stability is another thing entirely. So maybe you can't have both....

Another thing I've noticed, the gaming community overwhelmingly uses PC. I think it's just the lack of support the software makers can afford to devote to mac, but still, it's a drawback...

File Associations: Cmd+I->Open With->Pick an app. Then click Change all...

Folder Tree display: Column View. Cmd+3 in a finder window. Also, the little column button in the window's toolbar

You'll get used to it eventually.

the amount of people who just sit there and asume you own that mac on TV or you are trying to pose like ou own that mac.

I wish iPhoto would use Events more like Albums. For example, when I move pictures to my iPod or select pictures to share I'd like the option to share certain events not just albums. I shouldn't have to make an album of an event to get pictures of that event on my iPod or let me sister see them in her user profile when she's on my computer.

Good! This is how we weed out the complaining trouble makers. Apple isn't for everyone and I'm glad it's that way.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of Events.

How do you create a new event, anyway?

Events are in iPhoto '08, so anything before that, it's not relevant. Essentially an event is any set of pictures taken the same day- which actually works out nicely. You can of course drag/drop to rearrange pictures and such or split events up if you had more than one thing going on the same day. However, if I just want to add pictures from say my birthday to my iPod I have to put them in an album to do that. gerrr...

To make a new event you basically need to upload pictures, or select pictures you already have and click Event-> create event.

Freedom of Speech needs to have it's restrictions (i.e. following the rules set by a higher authority; the admins in this case) otherwise the world would have even more rude, obnoxious people who think that they can get away with murder just because they aren't technically breaking any laws by using their mouths to abuse people.

Freedom of Speech has nothing whatsoever to do with this argument. It has zero--read NO--restrictions, it is simply not applicable to the situation; you have every right to say whatever you want, your freedom of speech is intact. Being banned doesn't infringe on that, nor does being censored, as this is not a public arena.

Basic analogy--you have every right to stand on a street corner. You do not have every right to stand in the living room of the house on that corner.

I hate the way dashboard uses huge amounts of resources, regardless of how many widgets you may have in use.

I also hate the bugs in OS X...for example the one where a program didn't install correctly constantly tries launching, meaning your dock is expanding and constracting continuously...you cant end the program in activity monitor, so you have to reboot!

Happened to me yesterday when I was installing X11...something went wrong, the app screwed up and went into a fit of opening and closing.

Other than that its hunky-dorie!

Edit: Actually 1 more thing. I HATE the fact that I cant install it on a standard PC!!! I know there are many bad points to this (mainly driver compatibility issues) however there are ways to overcome this!

The green button issue needs to go away, because it isn't an issue. OS X is a multi-tasking OS, nobody wants their desktop filled with one window. Along with Spaces, multi-tasking is taken to a new level and I love it.

This should, however, be a user choice. I use slideshow software that displays discfulss of digital photos using HTML and Javascript in any browser on any platform. Because it automatically sizes each picture to the current browser window, I want to jump the browser window to full screen before running each slideshow. Because Safari doesn't have a Maximize, I have to do this manually every time.
