right, that's what I'd like. Detailed, sortable lists in columns.
Why when I have multiple items selected on the desktop and I push the delete button does NOTHING happen. Who's idea was it to make delete something OTHER than the delete button!?!!
Actually, that is a specific concept of how a "delete" key should work, and it doesn't apply to any system that doesn't subscribe to that particular concept. Windows machines generally have a "delete" and "backspace" key, both with particular uses. Macs are different, and so it is absolutely no mistake or flaw that the delete key on a Mac works like a backspace on Windows; that's normal, and how things work.
How do I skip the trash bin and permanently delete with a hot-key command?
And once again, why is this stuff not immediately obvious? Is there a way to turn up the help settings, like in windows, so that hotkeys display more readily while I am working and I can learn them better?
I don't know about a shortcut key to immediately and permanently delete stuff, but if there is one, I don't want to use it. With HDDs as large as they are, I can afford to leave things in the trash for a while to make sure that I didn't make a mistake. And if I need to delete it permanently, I can just hit the CMD-SHIFT-DEL combo, and that empties the trash bin. I never use Secure Empty Trash unless I have a very good reason to, which is virtually never.
As for why it's not obvious, it's the same with a Windows machine: gotta learn how it works. I don't know any computer newbie who sits down at ANY machine and says, "everything is so obvious, even all of the shortcut keys!" Type "Mac shotcut keys" into Google and do a little research. Remember, you are using an ENTIRELY different OS than what you are accustomed to, so these types of temporarily frustrating changes are entirely to be expected.
If you want something that is truly NOT OBVIOUS to the user, try running a Linux system. OK, yes, I might get flamed for that comment, but you gotta admit, Linux is a lot harder to use all-in-all compared to Windows/Mac!
Menu hotkeys that I try in both firefox and VLC player do not work.
WHy is it that when something is docked and running and I click it NOTHING happens. If I click an app, it means I want a window to open. Why?!?!
What genius decided I would want anything else?
Not sure about the shortcut keys in Firefox or VLC, but whenever I have used those programs (not often), they worked fine for me. Are you sure they are selected (the active window)? Are you hitting the right keys? I've talked to a lot of new users, mostly on Apple Discussions, and no one has ever had shortcut keys fail to work for them. Make sure you are hitting CMD and not CTRL, unless it's supposed to be CTRL.
Additionally, when you click most apps in the Dock, they open up the currently active window, or they open a new Window. For example, iTunes will open any open/minimized window, and if there isn't one, will open up one. Same with Firefox. Some applications however may choose not to respond this way, but that is application specific. To my knowledge, few if any included programs should behave that way, since it is counter-intuitive, and Apple has concept guidelines that prevent counter-intuitive behaviors (like all the Windows dialogs that ask you to choose YES or NO, so you are forced to carefully read the whole thing to make sure you know what each one means).
This stuff is the sort of stuff that should be intuitive. And the fact that I can't figure it out is driving me nuts. It should take me no more than 30 seconds to determine how the OS wants me to do certain things. Certain VERY basic things.... And what's up with the right-click? OMG. right click is good, there should be a right and a middle and a left click. Options are what it's all about. Options make life easy. I shouldn't have to mouse navigate everywhere to get stuff done.....
Mouse navigation over extended periods of time causes RS injuries on the wrist. Best thing you can do for your wrist is to get a large trackball mouse. Seriously, get one with a huge ball, so that you don't have to spin it much. Sure, if you don't use one now it takes getting used to, but years down the road you'll thank yourself.
Second, are you using the Mighty Mouse? I personally can't stand it. Very loud clicky mouse, left/right click is not as differentiated as I would like (especially if trying to play a game), the scroll nub feels loose, like it's broken, and the nub is too small to comfortably use.
Make sure you have right clicking enabled, if you are using the Mighty Mouse, since it's disabled by default I believe. This is one area where Apple needs to get it's head out of the clouds and realize that the world right clicks, and the Apple world right clicks! Right clicking is so essential that making it the standard on Macs is really the only way to go.
OMG. I tried to change a few simple printer preferences this morning. I COULDN'T figure it out?!! WTF!!?!? This is not hard stuff. This is stuff that should be totally obvious, but I searched and clicked and double clicked and went to setting and right clicked, oh that's right, there is no right click, and found NOTHING. nothing like a simple printing preferences menu that leads you right to the part that says black and white vs color.....
Are you using the Printer preferences tab in the System Prefereneces? If not, go there first. Also, there IS a right click for most stuff that should have one.
