no full screen option in browsers (firefox and safari)

must use Pages' proprietary .pages format; can't save to .doc (export only)

The thing I dislike the most is the unanchored multiple selections with the keyboard - noting that now (Leopard) Mail uses the anchored approach, but iTunes and Finder still use the unanchored approach.
I've always thought of this as a persistent bug in OS X, and it annoys me no end: When I'm multiple-selecting items in a list, such as files in Finder that I want to trash, and I find I've gone down one or two files too far, there is no way of unselecting items in the list. I can do this in every other OS in the world.

Code:
javascript:self.moveTo(0,0);self.resizeTo(screen.availWidth,screen.availHeight);

File Associations: Cmd+I->Open With->Pick an app. Then click Change all...

Folder Tree display: Column View. Cmd+3 in a finder window. Also, the little column button in the window's toolbar

You'll get used to it eventually.

thanks for the tips, will spend some time exploring that little details screen.

Is there a way to combine list and column views?

Good! This is how we weed out the complaining trouble makers. Apple isn't for everyone and I'm glad it's that way.

I agree. I'm not a big fan of Events.

How do you create a new event, anyway?

Lemme, get this straight, you guys make otherwise simple things hard to do so that people won't use your computers?
yeah, major drawback with all computers it seems. The guys that sell them are socially retarded. Especially so since mac seems to encourage elitism.

Hey dude, if no one buys your awesome computers, people are never going to write software for them and no one will buy your computers. You should be nice to people like me who are willing to try it out.

will try to be specific with my complaints in the future.... it appears there's a way to do most of what I'm used to....

I hate the way dashboard uses huge amounts of resources, regardless of how many widgets you may have in use.

If you don't use dashboard, google around a bit (or search the forums a bit); there is definitely a way to remove Dashboard entirely, though I believe it involves a decent amount of command-line work, so if you're not comfortable with that I'd avoid it.

There really should be a freeware app to turn dashboard on and off, but I'm assuming it's so embedded in the OS that it probably wouldn't be a huge performance benefit to use...

If you download Onyx, you can disable Dashboard entirely, as well as changing many other hidden settings and performing system maintenance.

I'm not 100% certain what you mean about combining list and column views- column view is presented in List mode, but without the sorting options.

Command-Click to highlight multiple items individually.

My only beef with Mac is....actually a Microsoft problem. Go figure eh?

No native MSN support in iChat.
OR
lack of Live Messenger features in Messenger for Mac. (mainly *Nudge* and video chat)

Using Adium, which also lacks features I want, but the customizability is beautiful. aMSN gave me my first Kernel Panic since I installed Leopard, while trying video chat. :( Also sluggish list scrolling.

detailed, sortable lists in colums

I'm not 100% certain what you mean about combining list and column views- column view is presented in List mode, but without the sorting options.

right, that's what I'd like. Detailed, sortable lists in columns.

Why when I have multiple items selected on the desktop and I push the delete button does NOTHING happen. Who's idea was it to make delete something OTHER than the delete button!?!!

How do I skip the trash bin and permanently delete with a hot-key command?

And once again, why is this stuff not immediately obvious? Is there a way to turn up the help settings, like in windows, so that hotkeys display more readily while I am working and I can learn them better?

Menu hotkeys that I try in both firefox and VLC player do not work.

WHy is it that when something is docked and running and I click it NOTHING happens. If I click an app, it means I want a window to open. Why?!?!
What genius decided I would want anything else?

This stuff is the sort of stuff that should be intuitive. And the fact that I can't figure it out is driving me nuts. It should take me no more than 30 seconds to determine how the OS wants me to do certain things. Certain VERY basic things.... And what's up with the right-click? OMG. right click is good, there should be a right and a middle and a left click. Options are what it's all about. Options make life easy. I shouldn't have to mouse navigate everywhere to get stuff done.....

is there a way to turn on an explorer bar that allows me to type a destination? I guess I'm supposed to learn to use search for this.

OMG. I tried to change a few simple printer preferences this morning. I COULDN'T figure it out?!! WTF!!?!? This is not hard stuff. This is stuff that should be totally obvious, but I searched and clicked and double clicked and went to setting and right clicked, oh that's right, there is no right click, and found NOTHING. nothing like a simple printing preferences menu that leads you right to the part that says black and white vs color.....

sheer madness.

Sheesh guy, calm down, to be perfectly honest, it doesn't sound like the Mac is for you, I would highly recommend you explore other OS options to satisfy your many needs.

To delete: Command-Delete (backspace)
Empty Trash: Shift-Command-Delete (backspace)
Often you can find this stuff out by looking in the menus, and looking at the keyboard shortcuts.

Clicking an application in the dock changes that application to the currently active one. At that point you would use command-n to open a new window in most applications.
To change printing settings click on the expand button (the arrow) next to the printer select menu, then use the menus there to adjust the print settings.

Middle, right and other clicks all depend on what mouse you're using. System preferences (mouse preference pane) will let you adjust what each button does.

Typing a destination: Go menu->Go to folder.... type the path. However, using spotlight (command-f) is usually faster than this for finding files.

Why when I have multiple items selected on the desktop and I push the delete button does NOTHING happen. Who's idea was it to make delete something OTHER than the delete button!?!!

Actually, that is a specific concept of how a "delete" key should work, and it doesn't apply to any system that doesn't subscribe to that particular concept. Windows machines generally have a "delete" and "backspace" key, both with particular uses. Macs are different, and so it is absolutely no mistake or flaw that the delete key on a Mac works like a backspace on Windows; that's normal, and how things work.

How do I skip the trash bin and permanently delete with a hot-key command?

And once again, why is this stuff not immediately obvious? Is there a way to turn up the help settings, like in windows, so that hotkeys display more readily while I am working and I can learn them better?

I don't know about a shortcut key to immediately and permanently delete stuff, but if there is one, I don't want to use it. With HDDs as large as they are, I can afford to leave things in the trash for a while to make sure that I didn't make a mistake. And if I need to delete it permanently, I can just hit the CMD-SHIFT-DEL combo, and that empties the trash bin. I never use Secure Empty Trash unless I have a very good reason to, which is virtually never.

As for why it's not obvious, it's the same with a Windows machine: gotta learn how it works. I don't know any computer newbie who sits down at ANY machine and says, "everything is so obvious, even all of the shortcut keys!" Type "Mac shotcut keys" into Google and do a little research. Remember, you are using an ENTIRELY different OS than what you are accustomed to, so these types of temporarily frustrating changes are entirely to be expected.

If you want something that is truly NOT OBVIOUS to the user, try running a Linux system. OK, yes, I might get flamed for that comment, but you gotta admit, Linux is a lot harder to use all-in-all compared to Windows/Mac! ;)

Menu hotkeys that I try in both firefox and VLC player do not work.

WHy is it that when something is docked and running and I click it NOTHING happens. If I click an app, it means I want a window to open. Why?!?!
What genius decided I would want anything else?

Not sure about the shortcut keys in Firefox or VLC, but whenever I have used those programs (not often), they worked fine for me. Are you sure they are selected (the active window)? Are you hitting the right keys? I've talked to a lot of new users, mostly on Apple Discussions, and no one has ever had shortcut keys fail to work for them. Make sure you are hitting CMD and not CTRL, unless it's supposed to be CTRL.

Additionally, when you click most apps in the Dock, they open up the currently active window, or they open a new Window. For example, iTunes will open any open/minimized window, and if there isn't one, will open up one. Same with Firefox. Some applications however may choose not to respond this way, but that is application specific. To my knowledge, few if any included programs should behave that way, since it is counter-intuitive, and Apple has concept guidelines that prevent counter-intuitive behaviors (like all the Windows dialogs that ask you to choose YES or NO, so you are forced to carefully read the whole thing to make sure you know what each one means).

This stuff is the sort of stuff that should be intuitive. And the fact that I can't figure it out is driving me nuts. It should take me no more than 30 seconds to determine how the OS wants me to do certain things. Certain VERY basic things.... And what's up with the right-click? Mouse navigation over extended periods of time causes RS injuries on the wrist. Best thing you can do for your wrist is to get a large trackball mouse. Seriously, get one with a huge ball, so that you don't have to spin it much. Sure, if you don't use one now it takes getting used to, but years down the road you'll thank yourself.

Second, are you using the Mighty Mouse? I personally can't stand it. Very loud clicky mouse, left/right click is not as differentiated as I would like (especially if trying to play a game), the scroll nub feels loose, like it's broken, and the nub is too small to comfortably use.

Make sure you have right clicking enabled, if you are using the Mighty Mouse, since it's disabled by default I believe. This is one area where Apple needs to get it's head out of the clouds and realize that the world right clicks, and the Apple world right clicks! Right clicking is so essential that making it the standard on Macs is really the only way to go.

OMG. I tried to change a few simple printer preferences this morning. I COULDN'T figure it out?!! WTF!!?!? This is not hard stuff. Are you using the Printer preferences tab in the System Prefereneces? If not, go there first. Also, there IS a right click for most stuff that should have one.

Um...not quite sure how to do this, being a newbie an all that. Could you explain please? I tried adding q bookmark, entered the code into the location (where else could it go?) and nothing happens.

POST NOTE, OK I got it working in Safari, entered it as a location and when I click on the bookmark it makes Safari go full screen, so thanks for the tip. But It doesn't work in Firefox, any thoughts?

POST POST NOTE: I went into Firefox Preferences>Content>Java>Advanced and enabled "Allow Scripts to move or resize windows"...and it works

Duh.

right mouse click

discovered today that my microsoft mouse has a right click when attached to the mac.

I DO like that everything is new and different. If eventually I get it all figured out then I'll probably be singing the praises like the rest of you....

can't you just speed up the scroll speed on the mouse?

I found a new one that I wasn't aware of today. If you end up in a folder and don't know where in the tree it is you can right click (or Command click) on the window title and it will show you.

That's because you're anal-retentively organized. I wish you and the other 100 people like you good luck, the thousands of us just fine with ID3 are humming along just fine.

I'm far from anal-retentive anything. I would simply like the choice, much as you'd like the choice for ID3 if it wasn't there. We both know there far more than 100 people who would like to see ID3 go, including myself and half a dozen other mac owners i know. Last time i checked this thread was titled "Things you hate about macs", not "Things you hate about macs but shouldn't really, because someone else doesn't".

Oh, I just remembered another thing I HATE HATE HATE about my mac...

I can't blame my lazines/unwillingnesss to get certain tasks done on "My computer's not working at the moment, you'll have to come back later or resubmit that request" :( ;)

You can try Firefox 3 beta. It full maximizes on the screen when you click the green button.
