what?
that sounds cool
but i dont get it...........you use a microsoft keyboard on a mac??
why??.............how
Any USB keyboard works on the Mac, and Microsoft makes the best keyboards, for my tastes. The MS drivers for OS X have a feature to swap the Start and Alt keys functions, to place the Mac Alt/Option and Splat functions in the normal locations.

LOL @ the fanboys defending Mac's ...Embarrassing.

If we don't like something about Macs, that's our choice. Everyone has an opinion.

Get a grip ffs!

Got off your frickin' high horse! That's not the situation. When some of you say a lot of negative stuff about Macs no one gets offended by it. The issue is the so-called "criticisms" which are really nothing more than whining complaints and people begin to wonder why you are using a Mac at all? A lot of the complaints are about what Macs can't do that Windows can do better. Again, you leave people wondering why have you switched to a Mac and why aren't you just staying with the Windows platform?
Criticism of Apple and it's products are always welcome because we are all using the same system so if the green button doesn't maximize to full screen on YOUR Mac it reacts the same way on MY Mac. If you don't like the green button then that's your opinion but if I don't share your grief and whines you have no just cause to call me a fanboy.
That's the problem with some of you here, if someone doesn't agree with your whining about your Mac you simply sit behind your computer and make cowardly statements and call people fanboys.
If you hate a lot of things about something you just spent a ton of cash on do people here have a right to call you stupid? NO. If you want people to respect your opinion you also have to respect the fact they like the system the way it is as well.

Hate? I personally could! and will never! Hate any Mac! (or any Apple Products) The reason being, I have had a mac since almost birth (heck, maybe i was born with a macbook (PowerBook 500 series, back then) in my hand! :p
With out it I would be lost!:)

One gripe with Leopard is that it's so plain to look at... It's all um gray... Reminds me of Windows classic to be honest. I actually kind of like Vista's aero interface more, as it adds a bit more colors. I also like how when you maximize on Vista aero, the window and tasbar/sidebars all turn black for you to focus on its content. Vista aero has a more dynamic windows manager, while OSX is pretty static (like how the green zoom button in OSX is always showing a "+" regardless of its being maximized or minimized). Also Vista remembers your window size and position consistently, while OSX's behavior seems a bit erratic.

My gripes about Mac are few and far between, these are small annoyances but here goes...

Time Machine ... not flexible enough ... too finicky...

OS X Firewall ... only filters incoming packets ... almost enough to make me miss zonealarm...

Screen Sharing ... at least when it comes to screen sharing, bonjour network browser is almost as finicky as windows network browser ... remembering machines that aren't there any more ... seems like it can't always find machines that are there...

The startup sound ... Macs aren't novelties any more ... There's no reason to have that thing going off in a crowded lecture hall or conference room. Isn't the glowing apple enough?

Mobile Me ... hopefully the outages and interruptions are over now...

well I just checked the online store and it turns out you're right. it still doesnt change the fact that the mighty mouse is a worthless piece of crap and the key travel distance on the alu keyboards will give you RSI. have fun believing that a company can do no wrong though.

it's interesting to see the other side of the coin; normally I'm the one defending macs!

I never said I liked Mighty Mouse. And where's the proof that Apple's KB will give you RSI?

Personally, I think Macs are pretty cool! But, I've been raised on Windows, so Macs are slightly foreign to me...but, since they are so different for me, the programs and everything are so cool to use!!

Just thought I'd give my input! :D

This comment is in the wrong thread, it should be here.

- The low battery warning will pop up six or seven times before the battery dies - and needs to be CLICKED to go each time.

I quite like the way the plus button behaves, a I really hate the way windows does it. This is mostly all personal preference and the way Apple does it, and it will probably never change.

You really can't wait 30 seconds to let the computer shutdown all the way??

have not used leopard all that much but resizing a window it just that. You are resizing the whole thing. It would not be consistent to just make some of the window bigger.

This is an ebay problem and not safari!

The light is not that bright

the light is that bright. i have to cover my laptop with something or else it drives me crazy when i am trying to sleep. it doesn't seem very bright, but in a dark room it can be very annoying as it pulses all night long.

So it seems people really HATE a lot of things about Macs then!

Also, I notice that the OP 'joefinan' has been banned - I wonder if that's because he dared to suggest that Macs aren't perfect and then - horror! - typed a list of things he didn't like!

The OP came back a few posts later and changed it to "what bugs you slightly" about your Mac. I don't think there is a lot of hate in this thread, after all it's a lot easier and less expensive to get ahold of Windows these days. I've got a couple of XP boxes collecting dust at the bottom of the basement stairs.

The OP made several more posts after starting this thread. If he's banned, it's not for starting this thread. Just as I hope M$ visits the "what I don't miss about Windows" thread, I hope somebody from Apple stumbles across this thread. Like anything man-made, OS X isn't perfect, but it's much nicer than the alternatives right now.

How about this: Slow as molasses network browsing on Leopard. Am I missing something? It takes like 15 seconds to load up a folder on the network (it's instant on Vista). WTF?

My List:

- Safari doesn't work well on some websites.
- Software selection is low and most stuff you have to pay for (Software for Mac isn't cheap either... Halo for Mac is way more expensive then Windows Version).
- iChat has no MSN support. and Adium doesn't have Video Chat!

1. You have that backwards. Some websites don't work well on Safari and that's because the developers probably chose to design for Internet Explorer only, which is the cardinal sin of web design.

2. What types of stuff are you talking about? Most every type of program that most users need is either built-in or offered for free by a great developer. The ones that aren't are usually the same price on both systems. Halo is an exception because it's owned by Microsoft and it's code was originally developed for the XBox. Since Apple was using PPC chips at the time, some of the code had to be rewritten to support a different processor. It was a lot simpler to get it to run on Windows after having it already running on the XBox. Thus there was a difference in price. Most other companies don't pull that type of underhanded pricing, unless they're upgrading the original program. In this case it was a port after the original.

3. Why would you expect that it would? I wouldn't let a competing product be supported in my program unless it somehow benefitted me to do so.

I'm pretty sure this was already addressed, but if you turn the sound off before you shut the computer down, it won't play the startup sound when you boot it up again. Even better, sleep it instead of shutting it down, then you won't have to worry about it unless you have an event sound for something play during your lecture or meeting.

That sounds like a problem with your particular system or network. I haven't had this issue and I've used many of my computers on plenty of networks. Now Tiger on the other hand...

Doesn't the chime mean the machine has passed a basic memory check? If there's no chime, it means you're in deep sh*t.

this may be true (I have no idea), but it doesnt need to be this way. It could make noise when the basic memory check fails and be silent otherwise, but then all the posers wouldnt get the attention they crave every time they start their computers in public.

personally, I have it muted using this

Even if Apple should be knocked on that mouse and that keyboard, it's hardly enough to say all their peripherals "leave a lot to be desired."

As someone who is not a 12 year old fanboy, I still appreciate the original Apple mouse (better made than anything Microsoft put their name on), generation after generation of great printers (Imagewriter I was built like a tank, Laserwriter launched a revolution), and that's not even discussing "peripherals" like iPods and iPhones.

mt

You have to admit, Apples human interface devices just plain suck. Well, a lot of them do. Apple puts style and looking pretty over functionality.

Exhibit one: The original iMac "hockey puck" mouse. How on Earth is this remotely usable? Are we supposed to look at it or use it?

Exhibit two: Keyboards. There ARE some good examples (like the current Macbook Pro keyboard though I think it's still 2nd class compared to a Thinkpad, the old Mac "clickey" keyboard which was also not as good as the old-school IBM keyboards but close), but the previous Bluetooth keyboard was too up-and-down stiff and made it easy to miss a keystroke if you were hitting the key at an angle (like arrow keys). I'm not too thrilled with the new Aluminum keyboard mostly because the keys aren't concave and don't grip the fingers, not to mention the small travel. But I am very fussy about keyboards.

Exhibit three: Mighty mouse. It looks slick, but it's painful. It's not easy for the user to remove the scroll ball to clean it. It's not ergonomic. I get hand cramps using it. The one shell design makes wrong button presses too frequent.

I wish Apple would apply some of the creativeness it puts into its industrial design into actual usability and ergonomics. Push the limits with radical keyboards, etc.

Mute, Disable or Quiet the Mac Startup Sound/Bong/Chime

To be fair those are pretty silly workarounds. Why should I need to manually turn my sound off each time I switch off to get rid of it?

Though I suppose on the other hand a musical sounding chime is better than a DOS beep that PC's do instead.

Have you actually read the article on the link ? It explain how to disable it.

I think you could make the case that things like the hockey puck mouse, etc. were radical designs (at least when they were introduced). That's the trouble with pushing limits, lots of times you fail.

Oh ... and about the comment upstream about iPods and iPhones not being peripherals, my iPod is merely my portable music server and my iPhone (still in my dreams) is merely my portable telephony server. Those are peripherals in my book. ::)
