That Tim Burton ad went on forever and did nothing to sell the product. I imagine just as many people we sick of hearing about Unicorn whatever than were intrigued by Samsung's offerings.

So Apple should attack Samsung rather than advertise Apple products ?

The approach of only emphasizing product function worked great for Apple when it was really the only game in town. Now, there is very worthy competition out there and that strategy isn't enough. Markets change, and so must ad campaigns. Apple is still quite influential, bit it's amazing how quickly that can change if people get stuck on an old way of doing something.

I never liked the I'm a Mac ads, but they were cheeky and light whereas Samsungs are unplesent and pompous.

I was taking in general, the one about people waiting for the iPhone 5 and the blackberry one.

So bottom line in your view:

It's fine for Apple to bash competitors as you feel its lighthearted.

But when Samsung shows a generic queue outside a shop of people waiting for a phone to be released, thats taking it too far?

Do you have any idea how hypocritical that sounds?

It is ok to dislike ads by both companies you know. The Mac Gods aren't going to come down and smite you for not liking something Apple have done.

And yet they are still make billions and selling millions of phones. Most people don't need/want a whole new phone to learn every time they upgrade. There is a lot to be said about being consistent, people like consistent. There is a small group that feel Apple has to be complete new every year.

Are the things Apple need to work on, YES! Like the mail and calendar apps. There so many things they could be doing to make these apps better and easier to get things done. Even those I have no issues, I know there is still some work that need to happened with maps to make the good. And as much as I don't think iPhone needs widgets, I could see them being useful on the iPad...

Small group? Really? Do you think 25% slide in stock price is small group?
If such a small group wanted different device, how come apple stock is down 25%? I didn't know small group can make such a big dent. Obviously apple disappoints. In a big way. People like consistency. But doing samething for almost 3 years is not consistency. If people liked consistency so much, iphone 4 would not have sold so much. People need change. People want change. And clearly, apple is doing NOTHING. You will see. IF apple come out w/ iphone 5s, what a DUD their stock is going to become.

HAHAHA I can't WAIT to see what you have to say about Samsungs 'innovative' S4. Can't wait I tell ya!

Yeah, it will be better than iphone 5s. That's for sure.

Some of the Samsung ads are good. Some of them go on too long. A good ad is the one advertising the Note II in the office showing multitasking.

Maybe I'm different, but I have a Samsung Note II and an iPad. Best of both worlds :)

Apple still has a big advantage app wise in tablets. Also, I prefer the 4:3 screen size vs. the widescreen size of Android tablets.

Now that Android is grown up, you will see fewer and fewer "awesome" things from them. I would argue you can only make a phone so big, and it can only do so much before you are only adding minor features and only a few people will care about...

Yes, they continue to come out w/ stuff that people are awe about. I remember when droid came out, nobody wanted it and everyone tried it and said it sucks.. Now, I see people around me who buys samsung phones and they are amazed. I am talking about people who used iphone 4s and others.. I am telling you.. apple is STUPID and they are sitting on their past glory.. Wake the HELL up. I have NEVEr heard so much negativity in apple's before.. I owned everything they have in apple store(minus iphone 5).. and I am thinking of not getting iphone 5s(oh wait.. I am not.. hell no).

If apple only care about making money and they don't want to make awesome stuff that people truly want, then stock price will reflect that when they release their next iphone.

I doubt the S4 is going to have anything impressive compared to the S3. It's been a year: so maybe a speed bump and minor feature.

I will say though, Android come along further in X years than iOS in terms of UI.

I used the original Google Nexus for a while which was out around the same time as an early iPhone (either the original or the 3G). Really, nothing great about it... iPhone was better. No contest.

The next Android I used was a while later. The Galaxy S3. BIG improvement, lots of great stuff, major UI achievements. Very nice machine, just a cruddy battery.

Apple in that same amount of time? The UI hasn't done much at all: Banner announcements and the gimicky Siri.

Sure: the iPhone is better constructed, has a solid battery, and is decent. But if they're going to remain stagnant then the Samsung is going to start surpassing them.

It's not a bad UI... but it's not perfect. And sitting on their hands for X years assuming that they're the big-bad-OS in town is going to hurt them unless they do more.

I don't agree with this guy. Samsung commercials don't do anything for me. In fact, I find them rather annoying, and ususally turn them off or change the channel when they do come on.

Even the superbowl ad that everyone thought was "amazingly funny" and "took the cool from Apple", I got the exact opposite. I felt as if Samsung was trying FAR too hard to play the "cool" thing, and came off as arrogant and repulsive.

While I agree that the Apple advertising has been rather lame, Samsung's ads don't seem any better. Judging by the numbers from last quarter Samsung sure isn't cutting into Apple sales. All Samsung appears to be doing is appealing to the large anti-Apple crowd and taking marketshare away from other Android vendors.

But now... Apple needs to do more. From a UI standpoint they haven't made many huge changes since the original iPhone. The interface is still the same... a touch-screen version of some other smart phone UI's from that era. Icons that you can't just place anywhere... no movement on the screen... other neat things the Android allows apps to do.

I agree, I would really like to see Apple make some UI changes so that the screens become more 'personal'

You don't have to try to hard to pick out the zealous commenters here. Personally I don't care one way or another... I went iPhone 4 -> Galaxy S3 -> iPhone 5. And it was my job that required the constant switching. Neither is really much better than the other, they just each have advantages.

It reminds me of someone I was talking to in real life last year.

When Galaxy S3 was announced with its larger screen size, my friend went on and on about LAME and EPIC FAIL and such. He said Apple's screen was the PERFECT size... not to big not too small. Anyone making a bigger screen is lame lame lame. Bigger for Bigger's sake.

Then he finds out that the iPhone 5 is increasing the size a little bit. NOTHING BUT PRAISES for Apple on their great design concept. Of COURSE it needed to be bigger, we have more content to read now. It's PERFECT now, but he would even accept it being even BIGGER for the 6.

I didn't bother pointing out the hypocrisy in his reactions. Someone like that, you can't win.

Yeah, because Apple has never done that.

"Hi, I'm a Mac."

it wasn't so much bashing as it was poking fun at. they never mentioned windows or microsoft by name and always offered help to address the typical user problems. apple pitted the actors against each other and even though you know that pc was the "bad guy", you always like him more and root for him. samsung pits its actors against one another so that one group is stupid and uninformed while the other one is cool. neither group is likable.

I just said that I disliked the Mac ads, I might have been a bit hypocritical but there is a difference between making fun of both people who use a product and the product itself and makeing fun of just a product.

snooze-fest

Athough I agree Apple's commercials could use a new direction, I didn't notice one person at our Oscar party who didn't tune out when the Samsung ads came on. Talk about a snooze-fest. I doubt even the biggest Samsung fanboi could squirm their way through an entire minute of that garbage.

I'm really confused by the Samsung Tim Burton ad. What is it advertising? The tablet is shown for just a few seconds. It doesn't tell me why their tablet is so great. All I recall is Tim Burton this, Tim Burton that, and something about unicorns.

Maybe I'm not a great test subject since it's pretty rare that I watch a commercial, but still, why does a stupid ad like this work at all?

Their stock prices has nothing to do with sales. Seeing how they had a recored breaking quarter once again...

Samsung wishes they had people standing in line all night waiting to be the first to buy one of their phones. I believe that without a doubt.

Who really cares? Personally I'd rather not wait in line or have a shipping delay. And that's not a comment on Apple. It's just that when I'm ready to make a purchase - I don't want to have to wait in a line or be told my item is on backorder.

I think Samsung cares more about profits and marketshare more than if there's a line outside a best buy or other retailer to get one of their phones. That sort of press is short lived.

After launch week - how often to you see mentions of a long line to buy a product? Exactly.

Because people are stupid. That's the whole concept behind advertising.

Wrong

Apple is losing on price, not on branding or advertising. If the iPhone cost as little as the GS 3, we wouldn't have this conversation.

Speaking as a 40-something, I find the hipsters on the Samsung commercial annoying. I hope the "Unicorn Apocalypse" claims them all.

That's easy to Answer. Decades before Samsung was a force in the smartphone market. They sat back observing the effectiveness of Apple's commercials bashing their competition.

so was the apple really bashing ibm in the famous 1984 commercial? or were they bashing the corporate mindset and the non-personal computers that people were forced to use?

was apple bashing microsoft in the "get a mac ad"? or were they really offering an alternative to the dominant pc market by highlighting common pc problems and the unique solutions that mac offers?

is samsung merely criticizing sheep that wait in line sand don't think for themselves? maybe but the list of specific iphone jabs, white earbuds everyone has and the store's decor can only be an attack on apple. that's all fine and clever but none of the actors are likable. the "apple" people are clueless while the samsung people come off indifferent. it's as if they don't care what they have so long as it's not apple.

I'm pretty sure that you can find the same pricing for iPhones and you do for the GS 3. And both are offered free or discounted by various carriers around the world.

Both Apple and Samsung are doing very well. And have different strategies. That's all.

No, they have to copy Apple's advertising style. "Hi, I'm a Mac, and I'm a PC."

NO, because unlike Samsung the iMac a Mac ads didn't insult the competitor's customers. If Samsung wants to attack Apple then so be it but don't attack and insult Apple's customers for the choices they make. Sammy is dumb, period. They think by insulting Apple's customers they will see the light, leave Apple and buy from the very company that insulted them for their initial choices. Pathetic Sammy, Keep it classy.
