eh? You can use multiple wireless speeds on routers now? But the iPhones 2.4 doesn't go up to the 250mbps speeds it can as I understand. Doesn't make a difference downloading things but it does if you use wireless syncing.
But. But..
Shouldn't the iPhone have an ethernet port ?

Exactly, you won't be seeing any more real estate in the mbp, you will actually lose much screen real estate to go with hidpi mode should you wish to. If you don't go for hidpi system font will be almost unusable. Apple is simply doing pixel doubling to go with these displays because they haven't managed to implement real resolution independence. In order for you to not lose screen real estate they have to have a screen that's 4 times the current resolution, and that might not happen in 10 years time, let alone now.
No. It's not a Pro laptop.
So you're saying only pros use ethernet ?
Oh well. If this turns out to be the case then this will be yet another round of hardware upgrades for me where Apple simply is not an option because of small but important details. Why can't I be the one to decide if the fonts are useless or not? And why couldn't I just then increase font size like I could on a Windows machine? Without gain in real estate any increase would be a waste - if it means less real estate than in the current 15" hi res and 17" MBP then it's even worse.
So you're saying only pros use ethernet ?
Yeah then Apple will make the iPhone crippled like it is now. The 4s can only see 2.4ghz n so no one can actually use the 5ghz n band at home.
lol no ethernet port? Is this the kind of innovating that Apple is doing?
I think I'm going to stick with Windows this next time around...
No. I'm saying that Pro laptop requires ethernet. Businesses are not going to purchase a £1500/$2000 Pro laptop without Ethernet.

Cellphones are not designed to use Ethernet. They've got a data connection built in and WiFi for when more bandwidth is required. They are not designed to work on hundred megabyte graphics files or massive data sets where a MacBook Pro is and Wi-Fi won't cut it.

or they should have a USB 3.0 to FireWire adaptor for FireWire users out there.
USB3 (as I've predicted in previous postings) eclipses firewire, just as firewire ended SCSI.
Perhaps there will be a "thunderbolt-to-firewire" adapter available for a while...
I could understand businesses not purchasing desktops without Ethernet because they are stationary computers but portables are just that. Portable. Logic dictates fewer cables with a portable device .
Adding a dongle to your laptop is not adding an additional cable.

USB to Ethernet adaptors suck, both generally and specifically CPU cycles.
I don't see why many are so upset over the lack of builtin Ethernet port.. I've used an Air for a couple of years and see no trouble using a dongle. The dongle isn't large or clunky, easily fit in any bag. It works as soon as you connect it, you don't need to enable it or anything.
Most of the time I don't even need one, but for the times I do I have it in my bag. It fits right on the end of the Ethernet cable and plugs right in.
In fact you can just leave the dongle on the end of the cable, then plug it when you need. I really see no difference apart from losing a USB slot.

Thunderbolt doesn't speed degrade. Search for benchmarks of the USB/FW/Ethernet ports on a Thunderbolt display and you'll find that they run at full speed.
Companies often spent extra money on docking stations that remained on a desk yet let laptop users remain mobile. I don't see the problem with having the same type of scenario here.
If Sony or Lenovo were doing such a great job they'd be outselling Apple. They aren't so in this case Steve was right when he said "the customer will tell us if we haven't done a good job by not buying our products"
Some of you guys bitch and complain too much. If you don't like it...send a message and don't buy it.
But that's exactly what they're doing, they're removing a port and forcing the use of Wifi. Therefore MORE portable, not less.
Next time reply to my arguments, the bitch and moan defense line for apple in favor of whatever crazy **** they pull on their pro users is old by now. I never said speed was the issue. The issue is having an industry standard interface protocol that's here to stay out of the box.
No docking stations are not an alternative when you go with your PROFESSIONAL notebook into someone's office and they tell you use ethernet to access it, neither at at conference, nor at work, nor at hotels, nor anywhere where one of the vast. Apple just can't pick and choose the standards they keep as they see fit regardless of what industry practise is. It's the same **** as with smb shares in lion, a pro machine simply has to have pro industry wide protocols. I am not bitching about the lack of optical, nor about firewire.
I will be buying the next mbp for one reason only retina to make up for the zero options in terms of resolution independence in os x and the ever shrinking unusable system font. That and the fact that I like a few of os x's past glories and I don't have enough time to migrate to another platform. I am sick of lion and it's slowness, sick of the ios crap features, sick of the bugs and sick of the piss poor development they 've been putting into it, as well as the blackmail they are doing on users to constantly buy new macs by not offering the service pack that is mountain lion to machines as "old" as 2009 and their mac pro line up of a few years ago.
And I am also sick that whenever they do something that makes absolutely no bloody sense as take ethernet away or stick an untreated glass (even crt's used to have treated glass) on their computers someone will be around from the cult to defend them and accuse others about bitching.
I am suggesting windows 8 to all my friends and acquaintances btw, and to wait for windows 8 tablets too or go with android. They might miss out on the great ml reminders app and twitter integration but they 'll also pay 20-40% less for a better product.
