Maybe it's a blessing in disguise. Dropping Ethernet might mean they are going to 802.11ac wireless, which is blazing.

I seriously hope they don't go to this thinner model. I like the way it is now. Loosing the ethernet port would seriously suck. Having to carry around another dongle in the laptop bag would be a pain. Already have one for 100mb and a serial port. AHHHHHH!!!

Switch the argument around.

I DEMAND APPLE DROP ETHERNET PORTS FROM ALL DESKTOP MACS NOW AND IN THE FUTURE BECAUSE THEY CAN ALL HAVE WIRELESS BUILT IN AND NOBODY USES ETHERNET!

That is EXACTLY what some of you sound like, it's the EXACT same argument but I bet you would soon be shouting if Apple did it!
How many of you use the ethernet port on an iMac? It's pointless, get rid of it.

But dropping the Ethernet prot from a Desktop Mac dosen't have any benefit. Theres plenty of space already. Argument fail.

All your points taken. And I'm not looking to buy a new laptop for strict business use. For that the choices would be pretty clear - and yes would include a VGA port. Even my wife's little Acer netbook has one and she uses it for presentations (if required - she hates PPT as much as you do and we all know it's a joke to begin with...)

I was getting excited over a potential new MBP as a tool for mostly photo editing and some audio recording if it can handle it and replace my current designated music desktop PC. I really want to like Apple laptops. They look like the most sturdy solution out there currently and I'm willing to adapt to some of the unusual (for me as a ThinkPad user) approaches. There must be a reason why so many arts and design folks are using them, right?

But it looks like here I am yet again being turned down for lack of a few basics. And the new high res "retina" display appears to be all smokes and mirrors as well if it doesn't buy me more screen real estate and instead just doubles everything in size. I don't even want to know that that does to photo rendering and color accuracy. So guess I'll be back to the quest to find an appropriate replacement for my 6 year old IBM ThinkPad. Desktop shouldn't be a problem there are plenty of very powerful and reasonably priced options out there. But finding a professional laptop that serves multiple needs has become quite a problem.

LOL you're singing the praises of an extremely old connection that's still ANALOG, AND has adapters available for cheap. lmfao

Dropping the ethernet port from a laptop has NO benefit. Nope, your argument fails. Get rid of the ethernet port from the iMac as according to people on here NO ONE uses ethernet.

Oh no wait..... you mean people with DESKTOPS USE ethernet, but if you have a laptop you DON'T. Strange arguments......... considering a company can have both.

Or your admitting that dropping ethernet is for cosmetic reasons only, cause saving 2 mm isn't that much, but if it's just taking up space on an iMac or Mac Pro then GET RID OF IT! It's a waste of space.

I don't see why many are so upset over the lack of builtin Ethernet port.. I've used an Air for a couple of years and see no trouble using a dongle.

Hi there, I use the ethernet port on my Macbook to transfer several gigabyte uncompressed videos from my campus' video lab server all the time. Doing that over a wimpy USB-ethernet adapter would easily take 5-6 times longer.

USB is great for small little things but is complete garbage for larger files.

What's the real goal?

With miniaturization becoming the trend, we all have to ask what in reality is the goal:

Are manufacturers sacrificing key features and performance in favor for a smaller and more portable product?
It seems the main competition is not other than who makes the smallest device.

Is there a real excuse to drop features we have always considered important?

There needs to be a balance, otherwise, we'll endup with toys carrying the "Pro"label.

^Assuming USB2.

That's nice, good for Apple, I think your fan boyish is blinding you slightly there to reality.

Sold HP Rack Servers (DL, ML, Blade), ProCurve and software for years. I'm not blind to what goes into a company. I just don't think ethernet on the side of the Macbook Pro is all that important.

Right now there's not a whole lot of accessories but the nice thing about Cactus Ridge (Thunderbolt chipset for 2012) is that it's going to make it easier to make peripherals.

I'm not worried about having the option to connect my Air or future Macs to a ethernet network or FW.

Very strange argument considering nobody really gives a ****.

Love the arguing, makes it nice to understand both sides. Anyways, I'm looking forward to a retina display and hoping for a USB3. Wish it would keep the Ethernet, but not upset if it doesn't. Yes I understand everyone's needs to be different, so I could see why some would be upset if it didn't have it. I'm just glad to have some news on these MBP's. I hope the graphics doesn't disappoint.

As a current gen MBP owner, I'm a little fearful of possible heat issues with a thinner device.

I was hoping they'd use the saved space to pour extra battery life into these MBP's. Yes, probably adds weight, but I don't carry that thing every spare second:)

The ipad battery is amazing, charging it overnight makes it feel as if you'd never run out.

Cool story bro...

Doesn't matter though...ethernet port is MIA on the new model and most of us don't care...and I work at a post house that transfers way more then you do on an hourly basis...technology evolves and things get replaced or removed entirely.

Most over-react.

He said an Air, theres nothing on an Air other THAN USB2.

There are no USB3 to ethernet adapters and a TB to ethernet would be $200 or more.

If Apple does introduce a laptop without ethernet and with USB 3.0 I can guarantee you they will sell an adapter. It might cost more at first but soon other companies will make cheaper ones. Just like what happened with mini-display port adapters.

Dropping Ethernet is bad for road warriors. Personally, I wised up a long time ago, and got myself an Airport Express which I use as a travel router (those hotels that still only offer wired 'net access always put that Ethernet cable in some ridiculous corner of the room--but not all road warriors have worked that one out yet). The only way dropping Ethernet makes any sense is if they include 802.11ac--but that would also suggest that Apple is about to roll out new Airport routers, which I can't see them doing yet.

USB 3.0 and no TB? Can't see it. If the specs are really better for TB vs 3.0, I think it unlikely that Apple would so quickly cave to the 3.0 camp--just not their style, IMHO.

But USB3 and Thunderbolt aren't even competing, Thunderbolt has MUCH faster IO than USB3 could ever imagine...
