Hmmm.. you all need to calm down.
Sure Apple is never the "first to market", but generally they are the "best to market".
If indeed iPhone X does not have Touch ID, then I imagine the Face ID process is going to be made "as easy" as the Touch ID process. I just picked up my iPhone 7 Plus then, held from the sides, double tapped the power button and ensured the camera was looking at "roughly" at me for at least 1 second the mimicked moving the phone to a contact less terminal. This was as easy and natural as using Touch ID which I use every day.
I can assure you it's not going to be as cumbersome or "tosser looking" as taking a selfie where the device has to be level, or square, or focus correctly, or adjust back light levels. Apple will not break the device unlock/paying process like this. I can imagine the Face ID process being as quick as being completed and the device unlocked by the time raise to wake has illuminated the screen.
Face ID actually has a chance here to make the process even faster/more natural than using Touch ID.
They will also not ship a feature like Face ID that is "half baked" that can be fooled with a picture (such as Samsung has recently).
Can you imagine how many times a particular model of iPhone is unlocked in a 24 hour period around the world? I probably unlock my phone 50-70 times (just a wild guess) a day, times that by how many users are around the world. I'm sure Apple have this data and have carefully considered this. Unlocking is the only process (apart from locking) that takes place EVERY time someone uses their phone.
Now if only I was as confident we could one day have something more than the boring icon grid as a home screen!!!!! Or even just move an icon out of left to right, top to bottom......
