This was the worst preorder in Apple's history

I don't think it was that bad. So what stuff sells out quickly and the Jet Black Plus was impossible to get a 16th delivery for. Big deal, the site worked, and it wasn't even that slow.
My order took some "American Ninja Warrior" moves but I did get it in, 7+ matte black ( for professional photographers, lol ), 256GB says ships in 6-8 days, 9/27-9/29. I have a feeling it will be sooner because I am already a professional photographer...( inside joke for OP...;-)

this was easier than 2014 for me, I didn't get mine until almost 3:30 that year but still got release day.

iPhone 5 was the hardest. Total nightmare
This was cake in comparison. Order went through first attempt. No refreshing or slow page.
I always thought the general consensus was that the 5S was the worst preorder ever. Hell you couldn't even preorder. Ya ass had to just show up
This was not hard, it just took some waiting for the Apple store to open and then when I was done, I did not get a launch day time, never had that happen before.
Can't complain I'm tired but was able to order a matte black iPhone 7 plus 256 on Sprint subsidized. Delivery 9/23 to 9/24
Agree with others who said 6 was the worst. I remember it taking over a hour with multiple incognito windows in the browser. Big surge in demand for big screens.
Back when I sold phones for a major retailer the iPhone 5 and possibly the 5S (can't remember) had the most disastrous release. That release made me flat out hate my job. Good thing I don't do that crap anymore. This release is probably the second worst if not equally as bad.
What carrier and phone were you trying to order? Also, what portal did you use? Online Apple Store, carrier website, or Apple iOs app?With every other preorder in previous years, if you stayed up until 12:01 and ordered within 5-8 minutes, you were guaranteed to get your toy on launch day. Used website with my left hand and app with my right. Tried T-mo and Verizon, jet black, all sizes. The dates were slipping with every breath I took.
Apple killed the reserve in store for T-mobile, which was the best option for upgrade program. It is a shame really.
Funny thing is, Apple shipping dates are slipping, but T-Mobile is still shipping all the phones, except the jet black, on time. I'll probably go to the Apple store tomorrow to see what I can do, but I also have a place in line with t mobile now...though i would really prefer to go directly through Appl.e

I'm on ATT. Got in like 3:20am EST. Black 256. Sept. 26th'ish delivery but I assume it will be delivered on the 16th when more phones roll off the assembly line the next several days.
I couldn't find the space gray color. I've been waiting for 6 hours for it to appear. I'm getting very thirsty because I'm afraid that if I get up to get a glass of water, it will appear and be sold out by the time I get back. My fingers are hurting from pressing the refresh button on my computer. I've used every finger, and now they all hurt.

Lets be accurate. The pre-order sell out is NO indication of popularity. Lets wait and see the actual sale number from Apple and how they did compared to other years.

So NOT true. I have been able to pre-order every year and get a phone on launch day. Some years were a bit harder. This year was by far the easiest. Most people are unprepared to place the order for any number of reasons. They dont pre-login, or forget their passwords, they dont have the CC information ready, they dont call the card company to be sure the purchase does not trigger fraud, they start late, they dont have multiple screens open trying to get an order through with Apple and their carrier to see which can be done first.
Most just dont wake up on time and then complain that the dates have slipped.
