Color shift is one thing, but do any of you guys notice grainy/dirty effect on white or light backgrounds? Every GVC screen I've had on iPhone 15s and 16s have exhibited the issue. Could also be described as a film grain/paper texture. Most noticeable at brightnesses below 50%. I can't unsee it but hate playing the display lottery.
Same here!
GVC screen here. Its not only off axis greenish but its overal greener, also when the screen is pointed head on.
As extra bonus the letters and faces are gritty / grainy compared to my 13 PM Samsung screen.

I have a LG GVC here, not a big problems but I've noticed that when I by side, it has less contrast and brightness.

Are the chances of getting a Samsung panel on the base 17 quite low? I looked at the display models at the apple store and both the base 17 and air had the greenish tint which was very offputting.

Have any base 17s gotten a G9N? I wonder if because it shares it’s screen with the pro that they’re placing those panels in the pro

Mine has GVC and is perfect and uniform. No green tint on tilt. I must have won the lottery.
You don’t have any colour shift at all from white to some sort of tint? What country are you from? Your GVC panel is on the 17PM? I have the same panel on my 17PM and when tilting the bottom away I can see a little colour shift goes from white to yellowish-blueish-hint of green tint. Not too noticeable but it’s there.

2 things I’ve never understood about Apple and their screens:

  • If the screens are individually calibrated in the factory as Apple makes a big deal of, then why can 2 phones look so different. Surely if you calibrate all screens to D65 they should all look the same, that’s the point.
  • Why does True Tone result in big differences between screens when enabled. Surely if the screens are calibrated (or even if they’re not, Apple will know the stats for each suppliers panels) then True Tone should yield the same result between phones/devices. Check the temp of the ambient light, and calculate the correct TT levels based on screen calibration to yield the correct adjustment.
Every Apple device should look the same with and without True Tone enabled theoretically.

I can’t guarantee it’s a Samsung panel, but one of maybe five regular iPhone 17 screens in the Apple Store in The Hague had decent viewing angles. (The others went strong green when tilted so the top was closer to my eye.)

If you are in the US you can return or exchange within 14 days no questions asked
I've got it in EU and we have a 14-day return policy but for technical reason etc.
It's a little bit difficult to return just without reason, but I'll try then

Eventually the support should cover it?

Morning after, comparing my GVC Air vs my G9N 17 Pro in an top angled position:

Air (GVC):

17 Pro (G9N):

The GVC Air is not awful by any means, but still has a slight green tint when angling the top towards me - obviously more noticeable when comparing it side by side with the G9N 17 Pro, which is not something I'll do after I return the 17 Pro.

Debating if to keep trying to find an Air with G9Q or just keep this one. Based on what I've seen, there are no Airs with G9N screens, so the next best thing is G9Q, I guess. My Air is Sky Blue and I want the Light Gold so maybe that's an incentive to try again.

I genuinely bet that if you stop comparing screens you'll not care and will think your own screen is great.

I think my GVC looks superb until I sit it next to my macbook pro 16" M3 Max screen, then it looks different. Then I hold up my M4 iPad Pro, and again different. In isolation all look awesome.

Personally, off-axis tint is much better than a screen that doesn't have uniform brightness and colour during normal use. Remember the horrid yellow LCDs and "waiting for the glue to dry" !!

You're not wrong, but you're also comparing, in part, to annoying problems with technology of yesteryear.

I think the struggle people are having with off-axis tint is that there exist OLEDs made by Samsung, and available on the same device, that don't have this issue, or at least it's not as noticeable because it either shifts less or shifts to a colour that isn't as glaring.

"If better exists on the same device, and I paid all this money, why should I settle for worse"... mentality.

And the idea of paying the same amount of money for a seemingly “defective” screen is annoying for most. I mean if someone’s 13 mini has a better looking screen their 17 Pro Max or Air, it’s valid they complain.

Personally I’ve compared an OLED from a 10 year old Samsung phone I’ve had, with a GH3 pro max screen and the viewing angles on the old phone were leagues ahead of the LG iPhone. It was mind boggling. Tells you of the different types of manufacturing being used between suppliers

I see the good old typical LG OLED green tint or green shift issue strikes the iPhone.

It's common to their OLED TVs. Especially the smaller 42-48" displays. On those, if you look dead center at it, the center will be white pink, and left and right edges will be dingy green. I had a 48" for a day, it's really awful because it can't display white uniformly. It makes those screens really unusable.

My 17PM has the GVC screen. Looking straight at it, it's quite white and uniform. No problems. It has better brightness and contrast than the GH3 screen on my old 16PM. However, the green shift when the top is tilted towards me is a lot worse, whereas the old screen just turns slightly pink. It's an odd angle I'd never use, but nevertheless quite awful.

Stores in LA have tons of stock, so maybe time to play the buy and return and repeat game. Never had to do it before.
