Post in thread 'OLED Display Greenish Tinting (any Australians here?)'
https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...ng-any-australians-here.2467465/post-34177656

Interesting.
You’d really need more samples tested to try and find a trend here between manufacturers IMO.

FWIW, I’m not too surprised the LG iPhone screens show more green off-axis tinting as the same thing happens with their OLED TVs, particularly on white and lighter colors. My own C3 does this and nearly every floor model I’ve looked at in stores has it. Really seems like it’s something with their manufacturing processes. On a TV it’s a bigger issue because you’ll more often have people sitting and viewing off-axis versus a phone where it’s almost always one person viewing it head on.

Conversely I’ve found Samsungs OLED TVs don’t exhibit this issue to nearly the same degree, and if there is a tint it’s not green. So whatever Samsung is doing for their manufacturing process is giving them an edge here I feel.

Edit - ninja’d.

I live in Europe where there is not an American-style culture of returning things on a whim.

I also don’t want to cost a retailer thousands of euros by returning five phones until I get a display I like, even if they allowed me. Assh*le move.

So my question: is there another way to buy an iPhone with a good screen?

Somewhere where you can see the phones in person and pick one that’s already out of the box?

Do Apple Stores sell demo units? I’d obviously not want most demos, but sometimes I see a clean one.

Get the Pro. Didn’t see anyone report a bad screen so far

Morning after, comparing my GVC Air vs my G9N 17 Pro in an top angled position:

17 Pro (G9N):

The GVC Air is not awful by any means, but still has a slight green tint when angling the top towards me - obviously more noticeable when comparing it side by side with the G9N 17 Pro, which is not something I'll do after I return the 17 Pro.

Debating if to keep trying to find an Air with G9Q or just keep this one. Based on what I've seen, there are no Airs with G9N screens, so the next best thing is G9Q, I guess. My Air is Sky Blue and I want the Light Gold so maybe that's an incentive to try again.
I have a GVC air and it looks nothing like this photo off axis

I don't like the idea of returning phones and costing the company money either, but on the flip side it could be argued that it's a questionable move to sell top tier phones with a lottery between a better and worse display to your customers.

I see the good old typical LG OLED green tint or green shift issue strikes the iPhone.

It's common to their OLED TVs. Especially the smaller 42-48" displays. On those, if you look dead center at it, the center will be white pink, and left and right edges will be dingy green. I had a 48" for a day, it's really awful because it can't display white uniformly. It makes those screens really unusable.

My 17PM has the GVC screen. Looking straight at it, it's quite white and uniform. No problems. It has better brightness and contrast than the GH3 screen on my old 16PM. However, the green shift when the top is tilted towards me is a lot worse, whereas the old screen just turns slightly pink. It's an odd angle I'd never use, but nevertheless quite awful.

Stores in LA have tons of stock, so maybe time to play the buy and return and repeat game. Never had to do it before.
If it gives you any encouragement or good luck, my perfect G9N 17 Pro Max came from Apple Tower Theater in LA.

Brother, Apple is not a mom and pop company. You’re overthinking it worrying about their profit margins. Carriers and other storefronts get their fair share from restocking fees.

2 things I’ve never understood about Apple and their screens:

  • If the screens are individually calibrated in the factory as Apple makes a big deal of, then why can 2 phones look so different. Surely if you calibrate all screens to D65 they should all look the same, that’s the point.
  • Why does True Tone result in big differences between screens when enabled. Surely if the screens are calibrated (or even if they’re not, Apple will know the stats for each suppliers panels) then True Tone should yield the same result between phones/devices. Check the temp of the ambient light, and calculate the correct TT levels based on screen calibration to yield the correct adjustment.
Every Apple device should look the same with and without True Tone enabled theoretically.

You can "fake" samsung features with the iOS colorshift option though.

I think people are happy with the overall quality, I only first researched this issue when I bought a 12PM with green tint panel.

I think it’s a pretty big stretch to draw strong links here. WOLED and LTPO are different beasts in how they’re manufactured and how they work

What color / storage size / Apple store did u buy from?

Trying to find one of these unicorns but can’t catch a break.
Cloud white / 256GB / Portland, OR

Edit: Samsung G9P panel

Does the white stay white when off-angle as you tilt the phone forward/back? It seems to me that's the main problem with Air panels. White shifts to green/red tint.
Seems like it stays white to me. I’ll add some pictures to this.

Maybe, but the same exact problem crops up on both their TVs and the phones so the end result is the same. Something they’re doing is causing green off-axis tints.

Shift looks good on this one but the uniformity is off, right side is more yellow than left which i see a lot with samsung screens. At least on the lg the whole screen shifts blue/green but looking head on its solid. I’m most Samsungs one side of the screens always brighter just compare the two sides next to the browser bar, left is cool tint, right is warm tint

Thank you for breaking that down. I do use True Tone. Could that be the reason for that?
