Capacities and colours?

Why does no-one mention these perhaps important details? I think I’ve noticed patterns, but I don’t have enough info to check.

Not to pick on you in particular, but I’ve gone through hundreds of posts here and hardly anyone can be arsed to type, for example:

iPhone Air, 256 GB, Sky Blue, bought in Japan: GVC panel.

Is that hard or something?

Incredibly frustrating.
Because it doesn’t matter the color or ssd size. I’ve had multiple colors and storage sizes every year since iPhone X. I’ve seen these threads here on this topic since iPhone X. They don’t save the “best panels” for a certain spec or color. It’s a complete lottery. There’s no proof that certain panels by the same manufacturer (GVC vs GH3) differ in quality. G9N isn’t any “better” than G9Q or G9P. If I’m wrong, point me to data rather than some random post from some dude years ago that everyone loves to cite. I’ll wait…

It. Is. A. Lottery. People.

I’ve received a Regular 17 with Samsung G9P screen. No off axis tint. No Pink tint when looking straight towards it . But it’s slightly warmer (more yellow) than the g3h I had on a 16pM. It’s the best display I had so far on any IPhone.
And, just to be clear: that was a 256 GB model? What colour?

Show me your evidence of that, since you’re so keen on data.

I’ve noticed several of the people mentioning an Air with a Samsung panel have specified they have a larger storage size (not 256 GB).

And if I was Apple, I’d certainly put better displays in more expensive phones, since buyers of more expensive phones are likely to be more discerning and Apple’s return costs are lower for less expensive phones. That’s probably why they’re putting mainly Samsung panels in the 6.3-inch Pro and more of the other panels in the regular 17 with the notionally same display this year.

The past matters little. I have a 4-year-old 13 mini with a GVC panel that is better for off-axis colour shift and brightness drop than my partner’s 14 Pro Max and ALL the current iPhones I examined in the Apple Store in The Hague (and I understand what to look for, unlike probably half the people in this thread; for example, I understand that “head on” means nothing because it depends on the viewing distance: at infinity, sure, head-on means perpendicular angles across the display, but at 6 inches there is a wide range of viewing angles from top to bottom of the display).

The quality and consistency of the display varies based on where it is cut from the wafer, closer to the centre gives the best most even screen, furthest from centre will give the most uneven.

Small screens like the Apple Watch will have variation which is unnoticeable, larger screens quite often have more noticeable variances.

If you don’t understand the basics of how these screens are manufactured and how photolithography works you will continue to make uneducated comments about colour and memory size having an effect, it doesn’t.

Apple does not cherry pick screens for the higher storage, higher profit margin phones, if the screen is calibrated and within spec it is installed in the next phone on the production line at one of Foxconn’s plants.

There are far more uneven screens than even screens as there are far fewer screens cut from the centre of the wafer, so it really is the definition of a lottery, if you get a good one first time……great…….if you want to play the returns game then you might eventually get a good one or go mad in the process.

All screens installed in the devices got through Apple’s QC requirements successfully. Apple considers all these screens of the same pristine quality. There is no correlation.

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary at least a cheap hyperlink.

Obviously colour and storage size (not memory size) do not affect screen quality, but since Apple is already selecting better screens for the Pro than the regular 17, it’s hardly a stretch to wonder if they are also putting better screens in phones with more storage (i.e. more expensive phones).

Apple does not cherry pick screens for […] higher profit margin phones
They clearly do this year, since the Pros in the Apple Store were ALL good whereas I only found a single regular 17 with a good screen. Which matches the “build plan mix” document floating around.

Foxconn isn’t even making all the phones any more. Nearly half are made elsewhere.

If there’s “no correlation”, how come every single 17 Pro screen I checked in The Hague Apple Store had a good screen whereas only one out of several regular 17s had a good screen?

Apple is clearly not randomly assigning screens between Pro and regular 17s. They might indeed be randomly assigning them within each model (across the colour, storage, and geography variations), but we don’t have enough data to know yet.

This is all in Australia
Got the iPhone 17 PM Blue 256GB on preorder, didn't have the green tint issue when tilting but returned it as I wanted the orange colour. Unsure what manufacturer this was.

Got another iPhone 17 PM Orange 512GB (GVC) two weeks later, really bad green tint issue so returned that. Two days later, I got the iPhone 17 PM Orange 256GB (GVC), also the same green tint issue so replaced it on the spot which also had the same issue (also GVC).

I've had an iPhone every 2~3 years since the iPhone 4 and this is the first time I'm running this issue. It seems particularly bad this year. Even the manager and the sales person at the Apple store noticed it and was happy to replace it as it was "unacceptable".

I have gone back to my iPhone 15 PM for now. Planning to try again up to twice more and then just accept the green tint. I honestly don't care for Samsung or LG, the green tint really throws me off whenever I pick up the phone or read anything on it.

G9Q in iPhone 17 base 256 black Germany
Thanks.

That’s a few confirmations now that some regular 17s with 256 GB do have a Samsung panel.

I’d love to see at least a couple of confirmations for the 256 GB Air. Every Samsung-panel Air reported in this thread where the storage capacity was also stated (which is only a few) had more storage than base. Which intrigues me but might just be a coincidence.

Black Base iPhone 17, 256 GB here. Nice screen - def a keeper. I get the feeling it's Samsung, because it has a pinkish tone compared to my iPhone 16, but sorry I'm too lazy to do the sys diagnostics thing and ignorance is bliss :D

Anyone in this thread reading this, don’t play the lottery, it’s not worth it. Take whatever your next phone is, and don’t “check it” as hard as that may seem.

GVC is honestly a fantastic panel. Prone to blue/green shift when tilted toward you, which seems to be an LG thing, but other than that... crisp, uniform, no issues when viewed head on (typically).
I have to agree with this, to a point. The iPhone 17 Pro Max that is in a box to go back to Apple had a GVC panel and it was a very even screen when viewed without any tilting. I'm so used to seeing Apple devices with slight tints and there wasn't any of that. The problem for me was that I sit at a desk for eight to ten hours a day and I have my phone on a stand and the bottom third of the screen was tinted green at just that slight angle. It got annoying after a short period of time. I think that there are varying degrees of tilt that can cause the green tint on these LG screens and it was pretty extreme for the screen on my 17 Pro Max.

I am not returning the phone because of the screen or at least that isn't the main reason. I decided to to with the Pro and have one on order. I have always had the biggest phone I could get my hands on but the 17 Pro Max is just too big for me for day-to-day use. I decided to try the smaller Pro to see how it works out for me. I played with one in Best Buy for a while and I like the smaller size.

If the Pro has flaws that are annoying, I'll just return it and stick with my 14 Pro Max this year. I've learned first hand how much angst trying to play the screen lottery can cause and I'd rather not do that.
