Standard 17 256GB Black in UK, it has a GVC display and shifts to green in the lower half when tilting towards me. Tilting away has a very slight green/blue shift (or could be screen getting darker). Straight on looks uniform with the usual warm OLED whites. Compared to the G9N 17 Pro I returned - that had a pinker cast from memory.

I'm finding I have to run the brightness higher than the Pro at around 50% for a comfortable level.

I much prefer the weight and feel of the 17 over the Pro. Negatives: Second camera module stops the phone sitting flush on Belkin wireless charger stand. Speaker vibration can be felt through rear glass.
Speaker can be felt on the 17 pro too

Green in dark areas? I’ll say that’s not normal, even for a GVC.
I mean when I push the bottom half away from me at a specific angle. IDK how a non uniform or a uniform one looks but it is really noticeable in the dark and during cloudy days when when I look at my phone over the shoulder without lifting my arm.

My air has red tinting on the bottom half of the display, far worse at low brightness levels. I also noticed that when the phone is hot from blasting the CPU that the screen non-uniformity gets way worse! When hot the entire top half of the phone (coming from from the plateau) gets a much brighter blue glow until the phone cools down. I’ve never seen this behavior before in an iPhone.
What panel ? Did you check?
I bet that’s a Samsung.

You will always be able to return it when bought at apple store. If an employee wants to play hard, talk with a different one.

I wanted a 512gb 17PM because I’m recording more video lately. Trying a silver 17PM with G9N screen. Classic Samsung red tint along bottom inch of the screen and much less vibrant than my 17PM with G9P (also Samsung) screen. Will be going back. This is ridiculous.

Im happy with my LG GH3 screen. No issues, its bright, vibrant, crisp and perfectly uniform and no green tint when being tilted. 256 gb iphone 17 pro max deep blue if that matters. I picked this one yesterday.

Edit to add: i noticed that other one I had also had GH3 but the green tint effect was very severe, even at its slight tilt the green tint effect is visible. This one was the same model and color but the 512 gb variant

You’re looking at it wrong. Just kidding.

It’s ridiculous, but not only on iPhones.

Samsung S24 Ultra.

Nice, glad you got a winning LG panel. The good LG screens are nearly perfect screens.
That’s a winner. And they said GH3 was the worst of all panels…
Wow, that S24U is brutal. I’ve gotten very lucky with my Android phones. I’m amazed that my Fold 7 is perfect considering how much screen there is.

GH3 seems to be more often than not the good one for 17PM and G9Q for 17P.
Though I wouldn't let serial# alone determine that, but rather one's eyes.

Is it going to be another of those years if you buy an iPhone a couple of months after it’s released you’re more likely to get a better screen. Happened with the 13 generation. I think my Pro has a better screen because I left it a couple of months after release before purchasing.

After getting burned with a terrible screen on my pre-ordered iPhone 17, I tried an Air to improve my odds of getting a good display.

Even went 512 GB in case that might help.

But nope, I could already see from the Apple logo at boot-up that this one went green at a slight off-axis angle too, though it was at least better than the dreadful 17.

So that’s two returns. Have already ordered a third, another 512 GB Air.

I don’t like the Pro design this year, but if I get another dud screen I might have to deal with it.

Crazy that my 13 mini display looks flat-out better than ALL the iPhones in the store, though. So much for progress.

This week, my wife bought herself an Air.

Right from the start, there was a very strong green/blue tint when the phone was tilted.
Even she noticed it, and compared to my G9C G9Q Air, it was much worse. It had a GH3 panel, so we returned the phone for an exchange.

The new model was a night-and-day difference — a little warmer, but very uniform and with no color shift when tilting. After doing some research, I found out it has a G9P panel.

I live in Germany, and so far I bought three iPhone Air models with three different panel types. Unfortunately, the panel lottery seems to be real:
  1. iPhone Air 256GB Black (my iPhone) → G9C G9Q→ Very good uniformity, no color shift, and high contrast even when tilted.
  2. iPhone Air 256GB Black → GH3 → Good uniformity only when viewed straight on, noticeable green shift when tilted, and lower contrast at an angle.
  3. iPhone Air 256GB Cloud White → G9P → Very similar to the G9C G9Q. A very good panel — it’s also a keeper.

G9C would be a new one. The known prefixes are

G9N, G9P, G9Q -> Samsung
GVC, GH3 -> LG
F5V -> BOE

But two out of three is an OK result (I mean, for a lottery!). Gives me hope.

I’m at zero out of two.

I didn’t know how to check the panel serial number when I returned my awful 17 (I didn’t even know about Apple’s screen lottery – it stabbed me in the eye and I went Googling).

The Sky Blue 512 GB Air I returned today had a GVC panel. It was better than my 17 but nowhere near as good as my 13 mini (which, oddly, is also a GVC panel) or any of the 17 Pros I’ve seen in the Apple Store.

I think I’ll stick with my GVC on the Air. After all, it’s a matter of personal taste. Since the iPhone X (and even before, since LCDs also had a wide range of color temperatures) I had always preferred screens that weren’t warm white, but when my 15 Pro (G9N) arrived, I didn’t mind keeping it. It wasn’t completely uniform (it had a bit of a pink hue) but it was still a good screen (as I mentioned before in another message, my SO now has it). However, after some time with the GVC, I feel more comfortable with it. The whites are less warm, it’s completely uniform (I think the most uniform screen I’ve ever had), and the blue shift doesn’t bother me as much. It really comes down to personal preference.

17P 256gb sliver with G9N. Had been seeing a slight pink tint in the lower third of screen. Not too bad though - other family members couldn’t see it. Turned on Display Pulse Monitoring (PWM) in Accessibility settings for some reason and I cant see the tint anymore. Screen looks totally uniform to me now. Strange. Don’t know what to say about that. Maybe I’m losing it, but I’m happy the screen now. Might be worth a try.

When I first unpackaged the 17 Pro with G9N screen that I now have, I thought that it was just a bit uneven in brightness but as I use it more, I'm finding that it is more than a bit uneven. It is especially apparent on lighter colored screens and web pages. I am not sure what to do. The LG screen I had on my now returned 17 Pro Max had a green tint without much of a tilt but it was even and a bit cooler (which I like).

I have one more coming on Wednesday. I had ordered one and the delivery date was 10/15 - 10/20. Then I checked the other day and they were available at the local store so I picked one up there. I haven't canceled the order yet and I am wondering if I should let it be delivered and have a look at it to see if it is better. And it not coming until 10/15 - 10/20 means that I'll have some time to see if the flaws in this one fade into the background of my mind.

The problem is that potentially leave me with two phones to be returned and I don't want Apple to be pissed at me and try to make me keep them.
I really wouldn’t worry, I’ve returned a huge amount of iPhones in the past and never had any issues. The return policy is there to make sure you are happy with your purchase.

While that is true but they can flag you as well for returning huge amounts. I had a friend who got told that they will no longer allow a pick up and that they will do one last return and was advised that he can do it online only. Basically he got banned from the apple store for pick up.
