Could someone explain what this means, please?

There was no need to take computers apart to figure this out, it is clear from Apple's own product page.

Both 13" MacBooks support either one 5K monitor or two 4K monitors.
All 15" MacBooks support either two 5K monitors or four 4K monitors.

That's what it really means, clearly documented: If you want more than a 5K monitor, or more than two 4K monitors, you need a 15" MBP. 13" has two fully powered ports, 15" has four fully powered ports. On the 13" with Touchpad they added two ports that have less bandwidth. "Less bandwidth" is still more than you ever had with any other technology. If you get yourself a USB-C hub with four USB-3.1 ports and attach four hard drives, the drives will run at full speed, no matter where you plug them in. 4K and larger monitors have to plugged into two of the four ports, that's the only thing that is affected.

The 13" has a dual core processor. The 15" has a quad core processor. The 13" processor has less total bandwidth. Not enough for four full speed ports, but more than is needed for two full speed ports. So they added two more ports. Even a little bit of left over bandwidth is plenty for lots of purposes. These extra two ports let you plug in two USB-C to USB-A adapters that I found for £3 each on Amazon to charge and sync two phones; that's one thing people keep complaining about.

One port that clearly doesn't rule them all.

We killed the headphone jack in the iPhone but then brought it back in the Mac.

We used lightening on the iPhone so it was incompatible with the new Macs.

We ridiculed the function keys and then ten minutes later announced a new MBP with function keys.

We ditched the power extension and the cleaning cloth.

We compromised the ports.

We used cheap RAM.

We throttled the amount of RAM the new Macs can run.

We reduced the battery life.

We announced one port to rule them all but then crippled that port on some machines.

We racked up the prices.

Apple products used to deliver a seamless and uncompromising experience.

Today, the ship has hit an iceberg.

Time to take to the lifeboats?

They've screwed everyone this year;

iPhone users don't get a headphone jack.
Apple TV comes with a USB port but you can't connect sh*t to it.
MacBook users get crippled MacBooks.
iMac users get nothing.
Professionals get less than nothing.
None of these things mean ANYTHING to me.
Appletv hasn't had support to plug anything into it since the first gen? I don't even know but this is a non issue. I mean really?
I haven't used a headphone jack in 3 years besides backups for my bluetooth ones die. Id rather have a waterproof phone than a headphone jack. i bought the 15"
Don't care about imac updates.
People here complain about the dumbest things. Not everyone is you

Nah. The ecosystem lock-in is so tight now 50 million people have nowhere to go. They might stare envious at the Surface Book or a Lenovo Yoga Book, but the siren call of macOS is too strong....

And not everyone is you either, but yet you think your own experience applies to everyone? The faults I listed DO however apply to everyone.

For the record, Apple could have easily made a waterproof phone with a headphone jack... but we all know why they removed it; to sell more 3rd party headphones so they can get royalties.

im not saying I'm everyone I'm saying not everybody expects perfection like you say. Somethings don't really matter to many many people. not just me.

what you forgot:
- the missing mag safe

- the fact that you can't connect your iPhone without a dongle / adapter

Apple has published a detailed support document highlighting the capabilities of the Thunderbolt 3 USB-C ports on the new MacBook Pro, unveiling some previously unknown details and outlining the different adapters that are needed to connect various accessories.

According to the document, while all of the ports on the 15-inch MacBook Pro and the 13-inch MacBook Pro without a Touch Bar offer full Thunderbolt 3 performance, only two of the four ports on the 13-inch MacBook Pro with a Touch Bar support Thunderbolt 3 at full performance.

macbookpro-800x463.jpg

The two ports on the right side of the machine have Thunderbolt 3 functionality but with reduced PCI Express bandwidth. For that reason, Apple recommends plugging higher-performance devices into the left-hand ports on that machine. As for USB, all of the USB-C ports on all MacBook Pro models offer USB 3.1 Gen 2 (10Gb/s) transfer speeds when connected to a USB accessory.

Other interesting tidbits in the document include the fact that six devices can be daisy-chained to each Thunderbolt 3 port on the MacBook Pro, and only one power supply can be used to charge the machine. You can attach multiple power supplies, but it's only going to draw power from the one that provides the most power.

Power supplies that exceed 100W have the potential to damage the Macbook Pro, and accessories like the USB-C VGA Multiport Adapter or the USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter can only provide up to 60W of power, which will offer slow or delayed charging in the 15-inch MacBook Pro. Apple recommends charging the 15-inch model with the power supply it ships with.

Apple also outlines powering attached devices with Thunderbolt 3 ports. The 15-inch MacBook Pro and the 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar can power two devices that use up to 15 watts and two additional devices that use up to 7.5 watts. The 13-inch MacBook Pro with no Touch Bar and two Thunderbolt 3 ports can power one device that uses up to 15 watts and one device that uses up to 7.5 watts.

If you're planning to purchase a new MacBook Pro and are confused about which adapters you're going to need so it will work with your existing equipment and accessories, Apple's support document is a good reference to check out.

I couldn't believe looking at the specs, no gigabit Ethernet port. Then I looked and found that the previous gen MBPr also had no Ethernet port. Maybe that's when Apple jumped the shark and no longer is 'pro'. Sorry but all wireless is not a great option. Besides if I have a ready Ethernet port available why shouldn't I have this option?

Ethernet ist not small enough to fit an any modern Notebook without Dongles. The Last Macbook with Ethernet was the non-retina. But this devices is so heavy, that it will be more a weapon than a notebook.

You missed one point:

We downthrottled the CPU speed on iMacs from the advertised 4ghz to 3.6ghz because we gave it poor cooling, yet sell it with a 4790K processor that you can't overclock anyway.

Wow, everyone going "booh, apple tried to save yet another penny, cheap-a** company!".. Have ANYONE heard of PCIe lanes? It's physically impossible to have 4 full-speed ports on the 13" without a CPU upgrade to the one used in the 15".

BOD need to fire Cook and Cue ASAP before they destroy all Jobs legacy
I put the blame on out-of-control Ive. I mean really, we already see it with the cases for the iPhone 5c, where it has holes that partially cover up the iPhone brand, resulting in weird look.

As a long time Apple user myself I would like to share my toughts on the new MacbookPro and on the subject of where Apple is heading towards as a company.

I read a lot of critisism and although I can agre with some arguments there is one thing many people, i.m.h.o seems to forget. With all do respect, this is clearly a period of transition. Apple hopes that the industry will quickly adopt usb-c for the new accessories by providing only usb-c type connectors on the new Apple pro machines. My guess would be that within a year time many new accessories using usb-c connectors will be available everywhere and in a few years time no-one with even be bothered about this issue...

Second, the new polaris chip is truly a powerchip. Anyone buying this machine will not be disappointed when looking at the power they are getting.

That being said I do have my criticisms on the new device....

First of, the price. I don't think it's legitimate to ask this amount of money, for which you can buy a better more powerfull desktop for. Even tough the new MacbookPro is by any means one hack of a nice looking machine (i.m.h.o the best looking laptop on earth) it's not (!) the most powerful laptop arround but it is one of the most costly.

Second, the touchbar thingy is really neat but I don't see myself using it that much. I'm a designer for profession, I don't see many benefits using the touchbar since I'm using shortcuts to begin with. In that regard I was much more impressed by Microsoft's presentation when they showcased the all new Surface Studio.

Third, where are the updates for the macbook? And why doesn't Apple comes with a 15 inch macbook? I can't imagine that students will massivly pay thousands of dollars for a macbook pro while a normal macbook would provide them with enough horsepower. If Apple will not come up with new general macbooks without the pro prizetag then the company might loose the group of students and scholars in general as customers for which the macbook and the air was quite popular.

As for myself, this is the first time, after decades of using Apple computers, that I wa,s and still am, at least considering alternatives. For the prize of one macbookpro laptop fully equipped I could buy an Microsoft Office desktop machine, or, which I prefer, a new MacPro (desktop) machine. But where is the new MacPro?
I believe in the concept of Thunderbolt 3, since I'm dealing with thousands of high-res files for work, I welcome every opportunity to booster the speed for tranfer many files. I also prefer OSX above Microsoft Windows and Apple's approach towards privacy issues.

To sum it all up, I need to buy a new computer since my MacPro is more then 6 years old and it start to get slow to a point that it doesn't work well enough for me. A new macbookpro would be wlecome since I also go towards clients a lot and a good presentation machine, one that I also could use for work, would be welcome. So the question remains, what to do? Or rather, what to buy? Or do I need to switch towars microsoft?

This all depends on what Apple will do with the new MacPro and how soon it will come up with an update. If the new MacPro disappoints or if Apple ditches the MacPro entirely then I really think of switching companies here. If it doesn't disappoint then I might give it a go one more time for the coming 4 to 5 years.

Time will tell....

P.s. sorry in advance if I sound like a drunk Swedish rabbit but I'm Dutch so not that familiar with the English grammar.

Really don't see why Moderators don't suspend some of these members or even explain to people that this isn't really an Apple issue.
These members clearly don't understand anything about PCI-Express lanes yet troll/whine just for the sake of it.

They should suspend you. This is 100% an Apple issue. The chips specs was 100% clear when they used them and yet they choose to put 2 additional half speed ports, rather than just put a total of three or two ports.

Things like the iPhone 6 boom in China are the result of Apple's built-up brand image from the genius of Steve Jobs. Literally nothing from this current cast of characters has done anything but waste it. They're still so much momentum from 2001-2011 that Apple is making tons of profits but it won't last much longer.

Maybe this is all part of a grand cycle in the tech industry where Microsoft dominated for 15 years, than Apple for 10 years, than Microsoft/Google will. Something like that.

In which case then the machine would run too hot and or battery life would suffer or there would be some other unwanted side effect like exploding computers.
