Every boot on my MacBook Air(Late 2012) I get an error message saying "Your computer was restarted because of a problem". When I close the lid on my Air it shuts down and upon opening it, same error message. It does not output to any external display, but my MacBook pro does. It is crucial that I get this resolved because this is my work computer and I need to use the thunderbolt port often.

Does this happen with a clean installation of macOS? If all programs are closed before closing the lid? With and without the charger connected?

Only other thing I can think of is this: power off the unit, disconnect the battery, connect the charger, let the machine power up on its own, log in, close the lid, open the lid and see if you are getting the same message.

Its a MacBook Air so removing the battery would require me to take the whole bottom plate off?

Yes, the bottom is a single piece of aluminium held in place by hex screws.
