I think I've just thought of something very important to bring up at this point. Well, a few actually. Panther - 24 Oct 2003 8pm GMT

6pm is the time announced for tiger - which time zone? GMT? PST? EST?

and

for all you students in the uk...

APPLE STORE REGENT STREET DOES NOT DO EDU. DISCOUNTS ON SOFTWARE.

and

If bought online will the delivery be efficient or will we be reminded of the teribble Panther Delivery Saga. Ordered my Panther the Day announced. Shipped worldwide 24th Oct, and I got mine in the mail, bought online with apple, 1 and a half months later

Most Exciting Tiger Innovation

And yes, it does have to do with porn... after going over website and looking at the new features of all the programs, I stumbled over a new advance in Safari 2: Private Browsing. Now, Apple claims this if for public macs so people can insure their info will not be stolen by other users. The REAL reason, though, provides a much better option for those who don't want ALL the places we visit on the net stored. And now, instead of having to clear my entire history every time I visit certain types of websites, I can just enable this handy feature when I need it!

is iLife '04 still going to work on Tiger? Or do I need to change my order and order iLife '05 as well as Tiger? I mean if I can just install iLife '04 and go on my merry way, that's great.

Yes, iLife '04 will work on Tiger. Of course, I say that not actually having Tiger yet, but I can't imagine any possible reason why it wouldn't work. One of the features of Tiger is NOT "New! Breaks all compatibility with older software!" so I wouldn't worry. ;) iLife '05 is also pre-Tiger, so that has just as much, or little, chance of not working....

On another subject, people worried about CoreImage and graphics cards might try reading the page at the Apple site again. CoreImage is part of the OS; you can't not have it. If you don't have a supported card, then it uses Altivec and/or dual processors to help out. So I imagine all you'd be missing out on are some skipped frames.

Has Apple noticed a typo in their screenshots of Spotlight?

Here
Here too
And here

Someone at Apple needs to go back to school to learn one of the basic tenets of punctuation:

Don't use an apostrophe to denote a plural!

Apple seems to think that the plural of "To Do" is "To Do's". It's not! No apostrophe needed. It's not a contraction and it doesn't indicate possession.

Yes, I know it's *very* pedantic, but it annoys the hell out of me. Time to write an email to Apple complaining about this very serious(!) issue. I wonder whether it will be possible to hack the strings used by Spotlight (assuming it suffers from the same affliction in the release version) and erase that errant apostrophe?
So do you prefer "to dos" or "to does" -- both of them look silly...and both are probably confusing too. Is there a standard way to make an infinitive plural in English?

I like the look of Apple's main page, Tiger in the Spotlight! :D

So, perhaps the old Emerson, Lake and Palmer song "Tiger in a Spotlight" will be theme!

Bass - playing in my face - grabbin' the elastic
Drums - listen here she comes - hammerin' the plastic
Keys - I play 'em all with ease - Freeze! Your shakin' at the knees
You're doin' somethin' drastic - chasin' the fantastic...
To dine with tigers in the sky
But did you ever stop to wonder why?
Man - living in a can - skippin' with a suit-case
Frail - living in a gale - slipping on a blue face
Claws - are scratching at the doors - Pause: If you don't lose your oars
You're trippin' on a shoe lace - racin' to each new place...
To screw your shadow in the sky
But did you ever stop to wonder why?

Sun - help me when I run - bleedin' from the moonlight
Nurse - help me with a verse - I need to sing the tune right
Days - I wasted in the maze - Raise your eyes above the ways
To keep a silver spoon bright - fly up to balloon height...
To ride the spotlight in the sky
But did you ever stop to wonder why?

Yes, like they were going to tell you days ahead of the awaiting busineeses and press that tiger would be release shortly and to hold on your order - get a grip mate.

If and this is a BIG IF you call apple - speak politly to the apple rep (not a good idea to scream and should at telesales / customer support workers - used to work as one through university and I know where that will get you) then they will more than liklely qualify you for the up to date program.

end rant.

I'm not sure sadswitcher is capable of making this call with a level head.

He's already escalated the complaint, B4 calling Apple. He's already assumed all other Mac users are rich money burning Apple apologists.
Hell, I still have a Powerbook 1400 from the early '90's loaded with 7.5.3 & I remember 7.6 coming out immediately after my purchase. Guess what, I never bought it. My current G3 iMac is running 10.2.8 & it still works fine. You don't NEED to have 10.4 for your purchase to be effective. Use what you have to make some cash. You can even skip 10.4 entirely, wait until 10.5 and use an incredibly stable 10.3.8/9 for another year.
If you ask me (and nobody did), here's a new mac user, new to this forum, who has successfully hijacked this thread for 9 pages. That's gotta be at least worth $100 bucks.

I think I am going to order online with my EDU discount instead of going to the apple store event. However does anyone know if I will get a full boxed version of the OS, or just a DVD in a paper sleeve?

Sintax - When I bought the 10.3 Panther upgrade via the Apple Education Store, it shipped in a full boxed version. Not sure if that experience will be the same with 10.4 Tiger, but it's probably a good indicator that they'll ship the full box again.

I just wonder why the Pismo isn't supported. It certainly is better specc'ed than the clamshells that are supported, and some of the the B&W's, too.

Maybe I'll just leave Panther on the iBook & Pismo since they aren't really in heavy rotation anymore. The mini has taken on the brunt of my work anyway.
Pismo is supported. Where to you get that it isn't? It meets the requirements.

Ok I've been on the forum today for a 1/2 hour and just saw this news and Apple's homepage . I wonder if that black background is the new theme for the OS X page.

I for one will absolutely not buy Tiger. I'm a switcher who bought a Mac mini last Thursday...just on the wrong side of the Apple Up-To-Date cutoff. Thanks for nothing Apple. I feel like I've just been screwed with my pants on.

I don't have thousands of dollars (or hundreds) laying around like many of you it seems. I bought what computer I could afford and don't have the $$ to spend on more software for it at this time. Don't bother saying you don't feel sorry, I'm not asking you to.

One happy customer will tell a few people. One disgruntled customer will climb to the highest mountaintop and scream his displeasure to all. I know which category I'm in.

Now where'd that BitTorrent client go.....

I actually feel bad for you. Why not try to return it, and buy another one straight away? That way you'd be after the cut-off date. What store was it? Maybe they'd even process it as a return with ur receipt and charge u again, so that you wouldn't even have to return the computer itself.

Fingers crossed, Our family Mac Mini shipped on the 10th April (arriving this friday), much earlier than expected, and even though i have happily ordered a Student Tiger single license at £58 (i am a student), i would love to just pay £7 for shipping costs and i think i am entitled to it because the Model is one that Apple listed in their uptodate program.
Just gotta try the uptodate serial number form when i actually get the Mini. I am not angry or annoyed at all, i should have waited really but the original ship date was 1-2 weeks so i thought i would be safe (ordered 6th April), to my surprise after logging into my account yesterday, i found it had shipped last friday :p, didn't get a shipped email either ....strange.
Fred :)

Awesome. Already ordered my copy (for $69!). Bad part is I'm away on the 29th (I think)... Gives me good reason to hurry home. :)

To all you folks whining about how Apple should just "give" you Tiger - get a load of common sense! If you buy a Mac from today onwards, you get Tiger for free, simple as that. If you bought one before today, you don't. Apple doesn't HAVE to give you anything for free, and like others have said, if you wanted Tiger so bad, you should have waited, or known you would have to pay the price to upgrade. Which brings me to my second point - this is an upgrade! Panther will still work fine after the 29th, it's your mindset that's changed. If you don't feel like upgrading because the price, then don't, no one's asking you to do so.

And, if you think your bitching against Apple will change anything, think again. Most tech savvy computer users (Windows, Mac, Unix, Lunix folks alike) would agree your argument is absurd.

Regarding Up-To-Date Web Form

So, I ordered my Mac mini from the Apple Online Store but the Up-To-Date web form is asking for a place of purchase, city and state. What do I put in these fields? I can't submit the form with it blank.

Thanks!

Comparatively

I come from the Windows world (am still waiting for my iMac G5, shipped a few days ago) and must say that Apple providing free Tiger upgrades with all hardware purchased on/after the announcement date is pretty darn good, comparatively (as a company in their position really don't have a choice if they don't want sales to drop for a few weeks).

When a new version of Windows is announced people still have to make do with what the hardware supplier pre-loads. For example: My uncle got a Windows Millennium preloaded Compaq a long time ago, months after XP was actually available on the shelf - but no free WinXP only a very expensive "upgrade". So at least in the Windows world things are for the worse. You get the product you buy in the shop, no better/no worse (which is actually fair).

That is the stupidest thing I have read.

One: Apple rep said "if Tiger is released in two weeks" it's free. Guess he was playing word games. He should have said shipped in two weeks. He also told me it wasn't out and that he didn't think it would be out for some time. Dangerously close to a lie there.

Two: 6 freaking days after I buy something it's outdated. Thanks Apple, great way to encourage switchers.

Three: The BBB (an independent third party) thought it was a rip-off and accpeted my complaint against Apple and the local Mac store. Nothing will come of it, but it's the thought that counts.

Did I get ripped? Damn right I did and only an Apple fanboy would deny it.

Quit yelling at the top of your lungs that you were lied to by the sales rep. Here you say that it is dangerously close to the lie but the next 3 pages of discussion are filled with you calling him a lier. Guess what. Tiger is not available until April 29, 2005. That is 3 weeks after you purchased your computer. It was Apples disission to announce that they were going to release it 3 weeks after you bought a computer. To me it seems that the sales person did not in anyway lie. If Apple would not have announced that they were going to release Tiger on the 29th you would have no reason to complain.

TIGER HAS NOT BEEN RELEASED.....ITS RELEASE DATE HAS BEEN ANNOUNCED!!!!!

Now for the return.....you have a fair argument. Take that computer back there with your reciept and say, "Hey I don't want this". That should be the end of the story. Don't take no for an answer. They are obligated to return an item within 10 days of purchase. If they contest that they are allowed to turn away a returner then I would ask to see it in writting. I have looked on Apple's website and don't see anything that says they have the right to turn you away and not accept the return. Go back there and get your way. But don't get in trouble.

I hope this helped and I hope you get everything straight. I am sorry that you have to go back to WinBlows though. Have fun and let me know how it goes.

P.S.---You might be more well-recieved if you calm down a bit. That goes for this discussion board and for when trying to get through this issue.

just order my copy of Tiger!! cuz im a student i get it for £58.75 instead of £89. Now ive just g2 wait untill the end of the month :)

This is a tough question. I did a google search and found one link that seems to suggest that the plural form of infinitives (except those using "be") are the same as their non plural form. If this is true, in this case it would just be "To Do." Most of the search results turn up articles on split infinitives. I know a couple of english majors but none of them are online at the moment, so that's the best I can do.

Anyway, always a point of amusement: Bob's Quick Guide to the Apostrophe, You Idiots

I would put the city and state where I live...I dunno.

So, in other words, it's like a dual PowerMac.

You know, of course, that your "50%" figure is entirely application dependent. Some apps will get more (even close to 100%), others less.

In other words, just like a dual PowerMac.

So, is the dual PM "junk" as well - since the CPUs communicate over the system bus?
_______________________

Is it any surprise that the first generation dual cores aren't going to have every bell and whistle imaginable?
Come on, Aiden, do you really have to start this again. Of course, you are right, ALL SMP systems, since the cpus are separate chips, communicate over an external buss. There's no other choice. Who cares? SMP architecture and dual-core architecture are two different subjects.

My post was about *dual-core* architecture, get it? Although this may be Intel's first dual-core processor, others (IBM, Sun) have been at it a while. In any case, my post was comparing the Intel dual-core architecture to that of other major vendors. The topic under discussion has *nothing* to do with current dual processor systems of any kind. As usual, since you can't actually defend your position, you simply muddy the water with some off-topic rubbish.

Why is it so difficult for you to agree that the Intel dual-core architecture is not as advanced, and will not perform as well, as the dual-core architectures from AMD, IBM and Sun? Does it cause you physical pain to admit that maybe, just maybe, Intel's solution isn't first rate?

Bonjour!

OK, I admit I can't be arsed to cruise through the last 14 pages of posts to check - *BUT* Has anyone noticed the new name for rendezvous?

Bonjour!

Also, I have noticed that many of these program upgrades are going to mean the death of many many shareware products, not even considering Konfabulator... but then this is only natural, and to be fair, they have filled in heap loads of holes as far as i'm concerned. I have fully sunk myself deep in the digital revolution, and now simply organising and maintaining all my files, with nearly a terrabyte (i'm a digital squirrel) is becoming a full time job. Spotlight/Automator is only convincing me of one thing though...

... this is one less reason to forget peoples birthdays.

It's not really an infinitive, it's a noun that looks like an infinitive. And such minute details of orthography are irrelevant, really. If we're really going to discuss something this stupid, then as a linguist, I think Apple made the right choice with "To Do's" because it is the most clear without being blatantly problematic to most people's sensibilities. And I bet if you were to look statistically at how many people write this as "To Do's", you'd find an overwhelming percentage of people do it with rather than without the apostrophe.

"Descriptive" linguists have been plagued for years by what we like to call "prescriptive linguists", a.k.a., the sort of people who try to pretend that a given language is some sort of stable, defined thing which should always follow certain rules. The reality of life is that that simply isn't the case. Language is a tool to facilitate communication, and an apostrophe more clearly communicates the meaning in this case. So don't mind these kinds of people. :)

Oh you're looking at that. Ignore it. Pismo meets all the requirements if you read the specific requirements.

* PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
* Built-in FireWire
* At least 256MB of physical RAM
* A built-in display or a display connected to an Apple-supplied video card supported by your computer
* At least 2.0 GB of available space on your hard drive; 3.5GB of disk space if you install XCode 2 developer tools

Pismo is supported.
