Tiger won't be delivered with a new Mac right away. Apple will offer Tiger for $19.95, the shipping and handling fee. They will send the CD's without a box.

As soon as the current preinstalled Mac's with Panther are sold, then they will come with Tiger. There is just no way to know what that date will be for sure.

I don't believe that's the case. As soon as Tiger is released, all new Macs should have the Tiger DVD dropped into the box. They'll still have Panther preinstalled, but the Tiger DVD should be there, so the first thing you'd do is clean install Tiger.

At least this is what they did with Panther (my dad bought a G5 just after it was released and had Jaguar preinstalled, but Panther CDs in the box). I believe third-party resellers should do the same thing (they'll have to open up the boxes and drop Tiger in), but I'd go directly with Apple just to be sure. ;)

BS. Do you really think that any system that is going to hit the CPU is going to feel anything other then sluggish?? The fact of the matter is Apple did this **** intentionally. They could have given the mini the ability to FULLY support Tiger but they decided to play games.

Yeah, the guys were sitting around the Board Room at Apple saying, "You know, we need to screw over that SiliconAddict guy. Let's *snicker* release a - get this - Mac mini with an underpowered GPU! Haw haw haw!! WAIT! It gets better. Then... listen to this... we'll artificially raise the requirements of CoreImage to *snort* ABOVE that card! Heeheeheeheeee!!!! That'll really piss him off!!"

Whatever. Like others have already said, your system will work fine without realtime GPU rendering of CoreImage stuff. Output will be identical even if using the CPU instead. If you needed the GPU acceleration, the Mac mini was way underpowered for the task regardless of graphics card. Not sure what the problem is, I guess some people just like to complain.

Can we hold off the bitching and moaning about core image until we have at least a definitive list of GPUs (the one apple posted just had 'includes', not 'only') Perhaps we can wait until someone with a Mini actually tries out Tiger and tells us what it can and can not do?

My Regular Radeon 9600 that is in my Dual 2.0 Ghz Power Mac isn't listed. I'm not worried.

I fully expect the Mini to have all of Tiger's bells and whistles.

For the purposes of Up-to-date, when is a new machine considered purchased?

Not quite sure, but my experience with Panther is this. We ordered a couple of PowerBooks before Panther's release date was announced. Received them right around the announcement - I don't remember if it was just before or just after. I entered either the receipt date (if it was after) or just a date right after the announcement, can't remember which. The form accepted it and we got the upgrades for the cheap price.

For everyone in that situation (including SadSwitcher), I'd suggest just going to Apple's up-to-date page and entering today's date (or after) and see if it takes. You might be pleasantly surprised. I think someone already posted success earlier in this thread.

A few pages back someone said about the Apple Store in Regent Street not giving an EDU discount on software, I've only ever baught hardware from the store, can anybody confirm this?

wow i leave the forums for a few hours and when i come back i see alot of newbie switchers bitching about tiger???

i was once a switcher and bitched a little but get over it , just be happy you have a mac and not some microsoft rubbish.

if your not happy with what apple has on offer go back to windows.

i am very much happy with what tiger has to offer , i use mac mini and ibook g4 1.2 ghz so there you go core stuff will not be GPU supported but the cpu will pick up the rest i'm sure - hell it's for pro app's i thought ? final cut ect ect..

:)

yes it was me. i tried to by final cut express there the other day and no discount was available. I just phoned them to double check if that would be the same for tiger and yes it is. NO discount on tiger. Sorry. I just got mine online tho! free seminar. interesting...

Oh well, not to worry. I'll be at the Store for the launch anyway, I'll just pay the full amount, probably easier in the long run.

Ability to swap Aqua for another interface?

Someone on Slashdot caught this and pointed it out. I thought it was a joke at first, but it's there.

From the X11 page :

"Experts may choose to replace the native Aqua window manager with their own familiar, standard X Window Manager."

Interesting. I know that there have been rumors since before the release of Jaguar (10.2) that Apple was going to include the ability to use UI themes but no mention of changing Aqua has ever surfaced in anything official (as far as I know.) Presumably, the ability to change themes is hidden in OS X somewhere, but it's never had a user interface put on it. Maybe this is a side-effect of that. Maybe these "expert users" can tinker with the inner working of OS X to access those rumored theme features and can plug more Unix-like interfaces into it. Who knows?

So can you confirm that you have a tiger build and a mini and that everything works?? Does the ripple effect (not a big deal, just a test of all of it working or not) work? does the cool cube effect work when switching users? I'm not complaining, I only want to get the facts straight.

apple page with black background

hmm thats something new, i am currently looking at the new features of 10.4, it came to my attention that apple is using black background for tiger pages, that is something new and untraditional for apple to use black that majorly, but after all its the company of innovations so using black is no big news, i just wanted to share it with u people ;)

it's called having faith in apple delivering the goods on tiger 10.4 !
if they released a rubbish OS that did not work fine on all latest mac's then apple's stock would drop like a turd out of a dog's bum.

trust in apple ..they will release the best OS going !

As far as I've known, only hardware discounts (education or corporate) are available in the stores. Software has be be purchased online to get the discount.

Edit: Why am I still listed as a freakin newbie!?!?! I've been posting on this site for years, at least 20-30 times. Grrrr!

What does this have to do with themes? All this means is, if you aren't running X11 full screen, you can use any X11 window manager for your *X11 windows*; in Panther you had to use the Aqua *X11* window manager. I'm not sure why you wouldn't want to use the well-integrated Aqua window manager for X11 apps, but you do have a choice, now.

I trust in Apple, that's why I'm switching at all. But I personally called and talked to Apple today and they told me I will not get some effects of Core Image with my mini such as the ripple effect when adding a widget in dashboard or the cool cube rotating effect when switching users. I'm just concerned because on the user switching info site, it shows the cool snazzy video to attract you, but theres no fine print that says: "will not work on mini". so im just a little confused. i believe its understandable. the apple website says you can go to an apple store and play with tiger yourself, so i wonder if they have it set up on minis. then we could find out.

Thanks again. Like I said, I'll just cough up the full amount seen as I'm going to the store anyway.

Damn...

Damn! It looks like I'm going to have to buy a FireWire DVD drive for my iBook. I really wish they'd release a CD-ROM set too.

My buddy has one of the first G4 PowerMacs off the line and it is a 350MHz machine.

It is a TANK!!

Sorry, not to pull I know more than you do crap on you, but the first G4 Macs were introduced in 400MHz, 450MHz and 500MHz, with the lower speeds shipping immediatly and the 500MHz configuration shipping a month after. Turned out that Moto couldn't make th 500's, so Mac had to step backwards on the speeds to 350MHz, 400MHz and 450MHz. It was a big deal at the time.

I only know this because I got one of the 400's before they slowed the line down. I thought I was lucky to have got something for nothing.

Well, the cube effect works on my 1 GHz TiBook with a Radeon 9000 under Panther, so why wouldn't it work with a faster CPU and GPU (mini) under Tiger?

thats fair .. i always find when watching the keynotes or when going to a apple store (london) that all the macs that have all the good stuff on has been upgraded like 1gig ram ect .. the mini will be slower granted but really the mini's are faster then my ibook and i expect my ibook to still do alot of eye candy! if you want all the bells and whistles i would say upgrade to a 100% compat mac, but then who can afford to pay for a Powermac G5 2.5 ghz with 2gb ram a? well some of the forum members can but alot can't

if in doubt about your mac ask apple ? i would start by upgrading as much as poss - my mac mini will be going 1gb ram and my ibook will be going 1.25gb ram - and june time i will be buying either a iMac/Powerbook and by that time i will know more about all the goodies that tiger has to offer

Interestingly Microsoft have announced a 'new' OS quite recently; Microsoft Windows XP N.

The N means it dosnt come with Media Player, supposedly to give other music players a chance. hah. quite pathetic. Media Player is so pants anywho, back in my windows days i was a Winamp guy

when i got my mac i actually searched for "Winamp for OSX"

There actually was, or maybe still is, a version of winamp for OS 9.

But anyway, Yay Tiger! Now where's this 10.3.9 upgrade..... Probably be a couple weeks before I order Tiger. Kinda busy right now.
