Here's a tough question:

Do I buy Tiger with my edu discount, or do I wait and get it from my university for free? I'd have to wait 2-3 weeks after it comes out (5-6 weeks from now) to get it, but I'd get it for free. Or I could drop $69 on it and get it on April 29.

What should I do?

Pirat... ermmm Borrow a copy until you get the free one from your university....

Or better yet... Check this out... Buy a new computer on the 29th... I'm getting me a new powerbook!!! WOOT!

Discounts?

Has ANYONE here actually paid full price for a piece of Apple software... you ALLl seem to be getting it with educational discounts...hmmmm ;) ;) I cant believe everyone here is a student or works in education. Apple are really getting screwed with that educational discount lol.

Judging from the website, they changed the default backdrop. It contains more circular figures in it. It is shown on the iMac screen at http://www.apple.com/macosx/upgrade .

Just giving the update here. It's not that important, but it was to me. :D

Good catch! I had viewed that page before but hadn't noticed that. They also changed the Apple logo in the menu bar. Personally, I liked the old one better. This one feels too 10.0/10.1 to me.

Nope. If we're not students (or "students ;)"), we're getting the $35 rebate from Amazon....

Pismo is supported. Where to you get that it isn't? It meets the requirements.

Did any of the Pismos ship with DVD drives? Maybe this is where the discrepancy is. Notice the iMac G3s specify "slot loading."

Of course according to the site you can order Tiger on CDs, but perhaps the machines that are "officially" supported are only those with DVD drives?

Don't feel too bad...!

That is the stupidest thing I have read.

One: Apple rep said "if Tiger is released in two weeks" it's free. Guess he was playing word games. He should have said shipped in two weeks. He also told me it wasn't out and that he didn't think it would be out for some time. Dangerously close to a lie there.

Two: 6 freaking days after I buy something it's outdated. Thanks Apple, great way to encourage switchers.

Three: The BBB (an independent third party) thought it was a rip-off and accpeted my complaint against Apple and the local Mac store. Nothing will come of it, but it's the thought that counts.

Did I get ripped? Damn right I did and only an Apple fanboy would deny it.

I am an Apple fanboy these days after getting screwed even more royally than you on my PC 2 Mac switch. I bought a 2GB Dual 1.42 Ghz Powermac G4 with dual drives and the best video card of the time one week before they announced the PowerMac G5. Let's just say I was not a happy switcher and vowed to never get screwed by Apple ever again. Cross checking the multiple Mac rumor sites will give you a pretty good idea of what's about to be released. I am about to replace that G4 with a new dual core 3ghz Powermac G5 and this time - I am ready!
BTW - you can always return the machine to Apple if you just bought your computer. I wasn't able to return mine since I bought it from ****** who told me that no Apple product was returnable after the sale - of course. And Apple, of course, said that the responsiblity was with the retailer. Imagine how I felt after having purchased the top of the line for something like $3500 and a week later - it was upstaged by a machine that blew it away, therefore, dropping the value of my purchase by 1/2.

Good luck anyway. I considered switching back Windows for the sour taste inmy mouth but couldn't after I discovered how great the new Mac OS X truly was.

A very satisfied Mac user 'now'.

im very excited about this, but in uni (thursday) ill have a nice chat to my lecturer and the tech guy about how much apple rock and how Tiger is coming out, and in that plateau of excitement ill buy it with the educational discount :) my plan!

They all did. 2x or 4x DVD-ROMs, don't remember which. I think I've put a total of 5 DVD's in the drive since I bought it.

Is there some way I can save the current backdrop in Panther? I don't want to say goodbye to it forever.

I went home from college for Winter break, when I was there, one of my sister's friend brought his PowerBook G4, 15", over to her place. This is the moment I fell in love with Apple and the Mac OS, I had owned a 20 GB 4th gen iPod, but I was not a Mac user.

I anxiously got back to my dorms in the beginning of January to sell my PC, Toshiba Notebook, and purchase a 15" PowerBook G4. I ordered it on January ~6th, only to hear that Apple had released the newer rev of the PowerBooks (Scrolling touchpad) at the end of January. Of course I was pissed off, but to tell you the truth, I was so satisfied at my PowerBook, I did not want to give it up. See the thing with Apple products, and especially with the PowerBooks, is that, we don't just own and use them, it actually becomes our friend, and we fall in love with its technological art form and engineering.

I got over the announcement pretty quick, and I am proud to say I am a Mac Addict now.

I am even more happy because Tiger is so close.

Just my 2 cents.

I actually went to Fry's Electronics today and had a iSight in my hand then changed my mind. Lucky for me as it looks like I'll be buying the "family pack" at the end of this month. Woohoo !!!!! Can't wait.

I have one concern... Where are Tiger's stripes? The box slightly looks like Panther's box. A different X of course, but no stripes?

Sorry just had to add that...

Yeah, I'm glad it's just a solid box rather than Apple adding the Tiger stripes. When Panther came in the mail, I used to joke with my friends that it was "Malcolm X: Strikes Back" the video game.

Your post reminds me of my post earlier in the thread about the single processor 1.8 G5s getting killed off 2-3 months after shipping after waiting 2-3 months to get the computer and killing half the value.

If they didn't have a great OS I probably would have made my G5 into a giant molotov cocktail and thrown it through a window in Cupertino.

That's right! I forgot to add that as well. I agree, the one in Panther looks MUCH better. The Apple in Tiger looks so.....basic.

BWAHHAAHAAHAA

MEANWHILE, Microsoft also had a big announcement of their own today:

Unpatched flaw found in Microsoft software

By Ina Fried

Microsoft is investigating the report of a flaw that could open systems up to attack.

The vulnerability, which was not one of eight patched by Microsoft on Tuesday, is in the Jet database engine component, according to an advisory posted the same day by security company Secunia. It could enable an intruder to remotely execute malicious code on a vulnerable PC, Secunia said.

Secunia rated the problem "highly critical," noting that exploit code for the flaw had been shared on a public mailing list.

A Microsoft representative said on Tuesday that the company has not heard of any attacks on customers' systems using the unpatched security hole.

"We are aware of the exploit code that has been released," the Microsoft representative said, adding that the software maker would take appropriate action once it has completed its investigation of the problem.

Word of the problem comes on the same day Microsoft released fixes for eight other flaws, several of them critical, and some of them revealed publicly for the first time in its monthly security bulletin.

I know I am going to be an AppleFanBoy® when I say this, but I just don't get why the masses don't make the switch.

Companies, I get, it's about cheap.

But why would someone risk their personal files and deny themselves all the fun technology can provide.

Steve jobs promised and delivered... The best engineers are at Apple, I don't doubt it one second!!! The most important thing for me is the 64 bits processing... I love the OS X, I love Apple machines but all the niceties in the applications are just OK for me...

I use a dualie 2.5 G5 + 4 Gb RAM + Ultra DDL... a pretty nice set but: what will 64 bits really bring to me? can someone be kind enough and explain what are the gains i am going to get.

I do a lot of Photoshop / FCP / DVD SP...

Thanks so much guys...

Am I the only one that this does not make sense too? In one paragraph you say the most important thing for you is 64 bit processing, yet in the next, you ask what 64 bits is going to do for you?!

In a nutshell??? NOTHING

For those of you who've bought it already: has your card been charged already? My bank shows that my check card has been charged $70.04 (I have the edu discount, but it should only be $69) by Apple, and I live in Oregon, where there's no sales tax! Just wanted to see if anyone else has this too since I thought that Apple's policy is to charge upon shipping, and I doubt they'll be shipping it in the next few days.

Edit: Well, just called Apple, and they said that it's just to make sure there are available funds, but in the end, it'll wind up being the correct amount. I guess we'll see...

Following up on my post this morning... What I meant is: all the niceties are OK... The new feature s in Icalc / Mail / Safari are all good.. But this is COSMETIC... I don't think that I am going to get much more than what i have today... This is really what I think... Dashboard is going to be FUN, going from Mail to Iphoto is just OK, Spotlight is a good feature... Once again,a lot of niceties, nicely packaged, nothing more...

I am truly in love with the ease of use and the Mac experience... The biggest thinkgh is that this time we really have a 64 bits OS given to the consumer... A 64 Bit OS sold to anyone who wants it!!! Can you believe it... All the buzz about 64 Bits processing....

BUT NO ONE in this forum has provided insights about the 64 Bits processing because the real thing about Tiger is the 64 Bits... Come on guys, forget about the general stuff like EDU pricing:

Do I buy Tiger with my edu discount, or do I wait and get it from my university for free? I'd have to wait 2-3 weeks after it comes out (5-6 weeks from now) to get it, but I'd get it for free. Or I could drop $69 on it and get it on April 29 --> Who cares???

or "What about the machine I bought a week ago...?"

or as Davel posted "Well, the cube effect works on my 1 GHz TiBook with a Radeon 9000 under Panther, so why wouldn't it work with a faster CPU and GPU (mini) under Tiger" --> Are we in the right Forum?????

Stop whining about the little stuff and look at the big picture: what is 64 bits processing going to bring in your daily activities... A very simple question I asked - poorly worded I agree - has not been answered... And I have been thru almost 500 postings...

Thanks guys!

Michel

PS: buying the Apple software or the OS X is cool... I know Apple makes a lot of money, but look at all the wonders they deliver on a daily basis... Buy Apple, don't pirate it!
