This line on the tiger page is hilarious:

"Running Mac OS X v10.3 Panther or Mac OS X v10.2 Jaguar? Don’t have a cow — see how Tiger will take your Mac to the next level."

That is the stupidest thing I have read.

One: Apple rep said "if Tiger is released in two weeks" it's free. Guess he was playing word games. He should have said shipped in two weeks. He also told me it wasn't out and that he didn't think it would be out for some time. Dangerously close to a lie there.

Two: 6 freaking days after I buy something it's outdated. Thanks Apple, great way to encourage switchers.

Three: The BBB (an independent third party) thought it was a rip-off and accepted my complaint against Apple and the local Mac store. Nothing will come of it, but it's the thought that counts.

Did I get ripped? Damn right I did and only an Apple fanboy would deny it.

It's too bad that you didn't join our community sooner. If it has been less than 10 days your could always try to return your Mac mini. Many people have been in your situation. Computers change frequently, so unless you keep up with the trends this kind of thing happens. Still Panther is a good stable OS. Your situation really isn't Apple's fault.

People, what are we talking about here, the "ripple effect, or am I missing something?

When I say "people" don't grasp what a budget computer is, I'm referring to the various threads lately about Mini performance. I'm like, "what did you expect? You do know it's the budget Mac, lower even than the iMac?"

YES!

I just preordered my copy. What's interesting is pricing here in Switzerland, while the retail price was only reduced by CHF 10, the academic price was reduced by whopping CHF 30 which I means I get for just CHF 119! I didn't expect such a big reduction. Thank you Apple!

MINI VIDEO CARD/CORE IMAGE FOLLOW-UP

I understand that the mini is a budget computer, but you would still think apple wouldnt develop the mini and tiger during the same time period with the intent of not giving the mini the ability to fully take advantage of tiger. I guess my question for the technical folks out there is WHAT AM I MISSING GETTING A MINI IF IT DOESNT DO CORE IMAGE. I have heard that core image will provide the ripple effect when using dashboard. Now, obviously i'm not saying this makes or breaks anything, but I want my new first mac to be able to do all the cool things, that's one thing I love about macs. If someone can just provide an explanation of what core image will do, that'd help a lot of us! THANKS!

Woah, you just bought a Mac mini last Thursday, but you somehow know about macrumors.com... Why didn't you use some common sense, and pay heed to all the rumors about Tiger release dates? Surely you could've gone 3 weeks without a Mac mini to save $129...

First, can you say Goooooooogle. "mac news forum" and this is the first forum that came up.

Second, who am I supposed to give more credence to: Apple reps in person at their store or some anonymous fan site? Hmmmmmmm.

Third, don't worry about the $129. Could I have gone three weeks? Well... my laptops battery died last Monday. Turns out that after 3 years of use it developed a short in the power circuitry and fried my battery. So... I could either pay $250 or so to have it repaired and the battery replaced or I could switch to a Mac. Figured it was a good time to switch.

The more apporpriate question is could I have waited from Thurs to Tues... yes. And I would have if the worthless lumps at the Apple stores had been honest and forthcoming. Heck, I would have paid then and waited to take delivery. But no....

$129 may not be much to those of you with half a dozen computers and a couple iPods and software in abundance. It is to me and so I will not buy Tiger.

Does that matter? Not to you or Apple apparently.

But it will carry some weight with the people I do business with when I inform them of my experience. I can guarantee they'll remember that if they consider switching.

I AM WRITING THIS IN CAPS FOR A REASON. IF YOU JUST BOUGHT A MINI AND ARE WITHIN YOUR RETURN PERIOD, JUST GOTO THE STORE AND HAVE THEM RE-RING THE PURCGASE AT THE CUSTOMER SERVICE COUNTER. IF YOUR LEARY OF HAVING A MINI EXCHANGED FOR A MINI ON A RECEIPT THEN ASK THEM TO PUT THE REFUND ON A GIFT CARD AND RERING IT THERE. FYI- SOME RETAIL STORES REQUIRE TO INPUT THE SERIAL # SO MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THIS DOWN IF YOUR GOING IN WITHOUT YOUR MINI. HOPE THIS HELPS SOME OF YOU GET THE UPGRADE. Back to normal text now.

Apple rep tells me a story.... I buy based on that story.... who's fault is it?

Already tried to take it back this AM, they refused. That was what really prompted my BBB complaint.

Does anyone know if apple is at all flexible on there up-to-date program? I just ordered my 12' powerbook on friday (4/8) and it shipped from china today do you think there is any chance they will let me slip in under the wire? if not it would almost be worth it to not open it, return it and reorder.

Thanks
Jason

If the manager of the Apple Store will not honor the rep's statement then back up you data and tell them you are going to return the Mac and will then buy one that will have Tiger for free (actually about $19.95).

Also let the manager know about the BBB complaint and advise him you are forwarding a copy to Apple. Managers don't like problems and they certainly don't like the home office know they aren't taking care of an unhappy customer.

As for Apple's policy, they do have to have a cut off policy and they have set the date of the announcement as the cut off date. The validity of your argument is based on what an Apple rep told you and you have a right to assume good faith. In general, the policy is a reasonable one and a lot of potential buyers have been waiting for todays announcement before buying their Macs.

I feel for you being screwed and being a switcher. I had a pretty bad taste in my mouth after switching to my frist mac, my single processor 1.8 G5 in Fall 2003. After waiting forever for my G5 to ship, it was killed off after 2 months for the dual processor model.

If you think you're pissed over an operating system that costs $129 or that can even be "borrowed" from a friend, how do you think I felt about a $2400 computer?

Remember, it can always be worse.

I know how you feel. I bought my PB G4 April. 2003 ( approx ) and it came with Jaguar. Not 2-3 months later ( approx ) Panther was out. I lost out on getting the upgrade and had to pay full price for Panther.I was ticked off for a while. Then I got over it knowing I had the BEST O/S out there..
Relax man.Give it some time and you will be happy :)

I sure hope they are just using the re-designed black site for the countdown to tiger. I'd like to see the apple site go back to the suttle white and greys from before.

The Apple Store refused the return in person. I was told that if I was returning simply to get Tiger for free that they would not accept the return. Then I told them to keep Tiger and just give me my money back. They refused and told me to contact Apple directly if I had any more to say.

Told them I was going to the BBB. Left and contacted the BBB, complaining against the store and Apple.

ZildjianKX, I feel for you, that's an even worse story. That sounds like a CC charge reversal situation if you could swing it. I made the mistake of paying with a check which already cleared my bank (no stop payment possible).

I'm going to go have a smoke and calm down.

The OS business model is a little different than iWork

tangerineyum said:
I noticed that iWork was the first low end software release form Apple that required a security key. Does this mean we can expect to have to enter a code to install Tiger ? Does Apple no longer trust its faithful consumer base ? :(

While they enjoy people who pay to upgrade to the latest OS, I don't think Apple is as concerned about OS piracy as they are about application piracy.

Every person who owns a Mac has paid for a copy of OS X at least once - when they purchased the Mac, which is different from the Windows world where someone can buy a system without an OS to avoid paying for it.

For Apple, the OS is strategic. Apple has to keep making OS upgrades or they'll be out-done by Windows or Linux and go out of business - regardless of whether existing customers are paying for upgrades. The truth is that Apple would rather have people buy new machines than upgrade to the latest OS - and Apple puts features in the OS release that takes advantage of new hardware to try to spur that along.

In comparison, iWork is more of a traditional software app. Not a lot of people are going to buy a Mac in order to use iWork. Instead, Apple has to make iWork attractive enough for Mac users to want to buy it separately. And, Apple has to make enough money on iWork sales alone to justify funding support and development.

The employees are under a NDA, a non disclosure agreement. Breaking it could mean being fired. There is also the possibility that they don't know anything more that any of us. That is the impression that I have. If they did, there are just not allowed to divulge.

Also on your receipt it should list a date by which you are allowed to return an item. At least mine always list a date for a no questions ask return. Never have had a problem.

Even senior Apple Sales reps have no idea what is coming down the pipe. I have a friend that works in Apple and there are times that I know things before he does. The people in the stores are going to be even worse than that.

This is no different than walking into Best Buy and knowing that the new "supergeewhizthing" is coming out in two days when the sales person has no real clue or care and until they do their regular meetings they don't (even then it's a stretch).

Sadswitcher, I am sorry that your experience hasn't been as satisfactory as you'd like and I do hope that you are able to alleviate your concerns directly with Apple. Still, you claim to be doing business with other people, but it doesn't sound like you have a clue about the business world. You paid for a product and now you are upset that you are not getting a different product. Unless you have iron-clad proof of a deliberate misrepresentation by an Apple employee, you might as well shut your mouth. You can go ahead and misrepresent your own case to as many people as you like, but if your whining tendencies are any indication of your customer relations skills, I doubt you'll find them a very receptive audience. And what, exactly, will be the point of your complaints? That Apple sold you a product, after informing you that there was a new operating system on the horizon and that the release date was not yet well known? For a man with limited finances, a reevaluation of your fiscal irresponsibility might be in order. You obviously know how to use Google, you should have used it before plopping down an apparently back-breaking $400 - $500 dollars.

I had a similar "getting screwed" situation when i got my iBook. I got an 800Mhz G4 12-inch. Shortly after getting it, the 1Ghz came out. I was annoyed.

But you know what I said to myself?

"Shut up. Stop whining. You have one of the best computers in the world running one of the best OSs in the world. Shut up and enjoy it."

Remember, that is what I said to MYSELF.

The apple reps comment is BS. They know a long time in advance. If they talk they don't work for Apple anymore. Simple as that. I know this for a FACT.
