I meant when Dadhboard is "off". Strangely enough, I can now get several widgets to stay on screen, including a maximum of two Stickies, which I couldn't do before. It doesn't work with many of them, though. And of course you can't minimize the Dashboard Stickies.
Hey that's a cool tip! I was able to get a few widgets to stay on the main desktop. I think this is a hidden Dashboard feature.

I dont even have Tiger but I noticed this:

H.264 Codec only works on high end macs. 1.8 or 2.0 GHz Dual PowerMacs just to have it smoothly!?

I bet that 10.4.1 will have an update for this. H.264 was advertised as a higher quality video file which just replaces the current QT movie engine and therefore should be the same speed and play perfectly. Nope. QT for Windows may play this well, I suspect its a problem with Tiger.

A friend of mine got Quicktime Pro and he wanted to try the export feature with H.264, however that option is grayed out, guess that means what your saying is true :(

He has a similar spec mac to me btw

i thought panther did this too?

No it only resets when you restart the computer, otherwise it stays at the date it was closed...and if you don't remember this you maybe stuck on the same day for a few days and miss an appointment. Not that I've ever done that.

I'm having weird network issues with my airport.

The only thing I can find in the log is this:

but I loose my IP Address and nothing works for a while, turning on/off the Airport on the machine doesn't seem to fix it, or if it does it is only temporary. Trying to find if there are any logs of value on my Airport that might tell me what is going on.

The number of really stupid little bugs is just too much... Apple rushed on getting the realease out it seems and QA went down the drain.

So far this OS release is a desaster! Most of us are tech savvy people, but did you think about all the people who are just "dumb users"? They bought a mac because it was supposed to be easy to use... What do you think they will do when this and that doesn't work anymore? This is really embarassing for Apple...

I wouldn't call it a disaster, anyway not like File Vault problems with Panther that did serious damage to the user directory. However, a fair bit of easily detectable problems went unresolved. If a bunch of us can find 200 bugs in 2 days, it really makes me wonder what went wrong with Apple QA.

Anyone having trouble watching the music videos in itms? I did a clean install of Tiger, and they don't seem to be working now. otherwise, i'm enjoying tiger so far.

Checking the Apple site I found this, which shows the requirements. Never realized it was that greedy:

I have Tiger sitting boxed in front of me, and I'm trying to decide if I should install it or not. I don't have another HD to back up with...

Although threads like this are useful, they are also misleading. How many of these problems being reported are widespread or reproducable? Maybe a lot of them, maybe very few.

The people with problems are the ones who are going to post (being that this thread is about problems, that's as it should be). But there's no way to know if the experiences described here represent what 1% of people are experiencing, or 90%.

A lot of this thread is dedicated to basic features that are lacking/missing in Tiger. Not one of these is going to change until Apple deign to update it. Certainly for me, these are the most galling things. You expect bugs; but not for basic functions to be missing (yes Preview, I'm referring to you).

As for random errors and the like, as they say, YMMV.

I've been running Tiger since yesterday afternoon, did a completely clean install, reinstalled all of my programs except for FCP, Motion, and DSP, and so far I've had experienced one bug. I can't remember what it was. That's how many problems I've had with this "buggy" Tiger release. Take from that what you will.

Richter, this happened to me when I tried to use my full ~/Library/Mail folder. Did you have any plugins such as httpmail when you were in Panther? Try deleting the files they leave behind in the ~/Library/Mail/Bundles folder, and then starting Mail.

Sorry people, but here's another one. Tiger now can't display the full information for the remaining space of a large hard drive on the desktop.

QS, have you tried bumping down the font size to see if this lets you see more? Or, alternatively, make the icon bigger so that there's more room to put text under it without ruining feng shui? :p :D

Nice idea with the font size, but it's already about as small as I can comfortably cope with. :(

And as for the icon size… well see the attachment.

(My 56x56 with size 12 showed nicely in Panther, FWIW.)

iCal Dock icon not adjusting date at midnight

It's a few minutes past midnight over here. I realised iCal's dock icon didn't change automatically from April 30 to Mai 1 at midnight. I had to click on the icon to invoke the change. Earlier versions of iCal didn't have that problem. I know it's just a minor bug, yet it's another item on the list of things Tiger broke.

Tiger? I WISH!

So, like most of you I pre-ordered tiger from Apple and got it on the 29th in the mail. I had purchased one for myself and one for my father. They both came together.

I installed on my fathers imac G4 and its a lot of fun, etc.

I then came home to install on my machine and IT DIDNT INSTALL.

My machine:
G4 733
Superdrive
512K ram
17G left on drive
Previous OS was 10.3.8 running great

So I placed the Tiger DVD and tried my install and got an error after only a bit of "verification". I tried installing this 9 times. Then I tried disk first aid and it showed me errors. Errors that it could not fix.

I had enough and went to apple and just spent 3 hours there. They determined that I would need to back up everything on my drive and scratch it, then install Tiger. I of course, do not have a HD to backup on. They tried everything else but that was it. I had enough and wanted my system back to "normal". They restared from the original panther disk on my HD. It DIDNT boot on its own and that drove us crazy for another 2 hours. They finally got this running back to my panther but this was quite a hassle for me and now I still dont have Tiger. I will get the new dual 2.7 in June after the WWDC event. I have Tiger running at work with no issues on their dual 2G machine. I'll at least be able to use that.

So I just wanted to post this since everyone else here seems to be able to actually USE tiger on their machines. I'm sticking with Panther until my next purchase and hopefully by then a new upgrade will be posted to resolve some of these issues.

Mail just does not work. I installed Tiger once, imported my mailboxes, and realized that my plugins were causing havoc. I removed them and tried again several times, finally I decided to start over and re-install Tiger, making sure to not have ANY plugins whatsoever. Still same problem. I've tried trashing prefs and caches and every other "solution" posted on Apple's forums. It still doesn't do ANYTHING. Can't send mail, can't receive it, mailboxes and messages sporadically disappear. And you have to force-quit every time. So I've come to two conclusions:

1. Mail 2 is absolute and utter crap. I honestly wonder if ANY of the Tiger devs actually use Mail as their email client. If so, I have no idea how they managed to miss something this big. Everyone is having problems with it.

2. Mail 2 looks like crap. Why did they think they had to change the interface -- it looked fine! Now it looks like crappy shareware.

So now I'm in the process of migrating all my mailboxes to Thunderbird, which looks so much better than Mail 2, and guess what?! It actually works under Tiger! I just wish I could still use my old Mail plugins (like Appetizer) and I wish that Thunderbird had a Spotlight plugin.

Other than Mail, everything seems to work as advertised. Spotlight is not quite as snappy as it looks in demos, but it's faster than search under Panther.

What's with the Safari back button now? I can no longer right-click it to see my recent history. Also, I have to hold the mouse button down while going through the list, or else the list disappears. But then at other times it works right. ??

After upgrading 3 of my 4 Macs I've come to the horrible realization that Tiger has completely deleted all my email and email accounts. (I have back ups, thank God.) Not only that but after setting up my accounts all over again, I can only send mail. I won't get new mail. It won't even show the main window at start up, I have to go in manually and have it show. To quit I have to force quit the app.

These are my 3 Macs with the same problem:

-iMac 800mhz G4
-iBook 700mhz G3 12"
-PowerMac cube 450mhz G4

I did a regular upgrade on all. I have a PowerBook 1.5ghz G4 15" that I have not upgraded since its my main computer and I cannot afford to be with email at all.

What do you guys recommend? Is there a fix to this? Clean install on all of them? Is it possible to downgrade to Panther? Nothing in Tiger has much benefit for me. Not until Photoshop incorporates core image into its features.

Thnx in advanced.

Keep your backup of email and Import your mailbox from your backup copy. (Keep a backup of your backup also). Had the same thing happen to me.

Quicktime is nearly unusable

I am not talking about the HD stuff at the apple website. Quicktime using iChat just sucks now, eveything is just so choppy on my imac 700. Does anyone know how to revert back to PANTHER. I am all about being patient and letting Apple fix the bugs, but I use iSight for bussiness and it is extremly choppy.

This OS release is really bananaware... I am majorly disappointed... :(

Actually I am thinking about downgrading again... Thank God I did a CCC of my harddrive before I installed...

I've absolutely no problems whatsoever. I saw you mentioned in one of your earlier posts (right before this one) that Toast was not working correctly. Is that the basis for your "bananaware" comment?

I really don't think its Apple's responsibilty to make sure every developer gets its stuff together so the OS works with their applications.

Steve got this ball rolling at WWDC, and told developers to stop screwing around with Panther.

If a developer sat on their ass and didn't make sure their application was compatible with Tiger (they had essentially 9 months), that is who you should be upset with....that is the bananaware.

I would think that searching "entire messages" in Mail would include information in the subject. I guess I was wrong. I purposely searched for a specific message that had the word "invoice" in the subject only, and it did not show up in the results when searching "entire messages."

That doesn't seem to be too useful, does it?
