Trump baffles me.
Banning TikTok was one of the very few things Biden got right.
You might be surprised to learn that the TikTok ban was Trump to begin with. Trump signed an executive order banning TikTok during his first term, which led to court hearings. Once Biden came onboard, he signed an executive order revoking Trump's executive order and asked for a proper investigation of the app looking for threats to U.S. national security.

As the investigation details from agencies were revealed, a surprising number of lawmakers were agreeing that Trump was right, it should be banned. In March 2023, Trump posted on social media that both Democrats and Republicans had come to "realize that I was right" that a ban on TikTok was needed for reasons of "China Influence and National Security". Thanks to the bipartisan support, congress banned TikTok and was signed by Biden.

It wasn't until about year ago that Trump flip flopped and now doesn't want it banned. Who knows what the real reason is? Logically seems that he wants to sell it to a buddy like Larry Ellison, or someone with loyalty. Maybe waiting for a worthwhile quid-pro-quo. It probably is just his pettiness, annoyed that his executive order was revoked, and now just wants to undo another Biden-signed law. This cements the law where only congress can now reverse course (and probably doesn't have the votes anymore?), further strengthening Trump's initial ban.

Yawn. Tik Tok. I thought that was dead. There must be some money remaining to be extracted from it I guess.

U.S. President Donald Trump today said that he is signing an executive order to keep TikTok running for an additional 75 days as his administration continues to work on the sale of the social network's U.S. operations.

TikTok was barred from operating in the United States when the Protecting Americans From Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act went into effect on January 19, but Trump at the time ordered the Department of Justice not to enforce the law for a 75-day period. The window was set to expire on Saturday, April 5 if TikTok did not reach a deal to sell to an American company, but TikTok now has another two and a half months.

Trump said on his Truth Social network that his administration has made "tremendous progress" on a deal to "save" TikTok, but more work is required. Rumors suggest that Trump's team has been considering offers from companies like Oracle and Perplexity, along with individuals like Jimmy Donaldson (also known as MrBeast), Shark Tank host Kevin O'Leary, Employer.com founder Jesse Tinsley, and billionaire Frank McCourt. Amazon even made an offer this week.

TikTok parent company ByteDance has said that it does not plan to sell TikTok, and China has also not agreed to a deal, but Trump believes that tariffs could be used for leverage. It is possible that Trump will aim for an agreement that includes bringing on multiple U.S. investors with the TikTok algorithm leased from ByteDance, but it is not yet clear if that will meet the requirements of the law.

Translation. “You must sell Tic Toc” “Make me”

It's concerning to me that congress can pass a law, it is upheld by judiciary, and the President can write an EO to block it and everyone seems to be OK with that. What happened to checks and balances?
According to Gruber, it's a pause on the enforcement of the law.

Yeah I mean I just don't think that the executive branch gets to make that call. But evidently they do, by fiat if nothing else.

The constitution says the President “shall take care the laws be faithfully executed.”

I don’t understand how anyone could argue telling his AG to not enforce a law that not only was passed by Congress, but upheld as Constitutional by the Supreme Court, was taking care that the laws are faithfully executed, regardless of your opinion of the law or the President.

I voted for Trump 3x but I agree, I don't think he should have the authority to do this. And the fact that nobody is calling him on it is troubling.

He thinks TikTok helped him with the young vote. I think he is wrong about this

Would rather get a 75 day extension on these damn taxes, I mean tariffs... don't care about TikTok, care about the price of everything I need to buy!!
Would prefer a much longer extension of the tariffs so I can buy a few things including a 17 Pro later this year. I also want a Switch 2 that doesn’t come close to the current price of the PS5 Pro.

I’ve seen the consequences firsthand—a young kid I knew took part in a TikTok challenge. Now? He’s in prison. There are others too, though I can’t speak from personal experience with those cases. Honestly, I believe the obsession with social media apps might end up being more addictive than heroin laced with fentanyl. 🙄
If so, they are very differently addictive. Someone in acute opiate withdrawal, such as from heroin, looks way different from a teen whose smartphone got confiscated so no FaceBook for a few days.

What's the young kid in prison for? That sounds really strange. I'm not asking for a name and personally identifiable info., just a general overview.

People issued stupid dares way before social media. I'm sympathetic to minors, but even then, when I read of people doing things like eating Tide pods... Who could think that wouldn't be dangerous?

I recently ran across this blurb in an e-mail digest:

"Pouring coffee into your rectum isn't worth the risk, says expert”

And the subtitle of the e-mail, under MDLinx Evening Edition was this - Rectal Coffee: Just Say No?

I thought maybe it was an April Fool’s joke. Apparently not. From March 28, 2025, Science Alert: https://www.sciencealert.com/pouring-coffee-into-your-rectum-isnt-worth-the-risk-says-expert

Says coffee enemas are a social medical wellness trend to cleanse the colon and detoxify the body. But specialists were said to urge Goop fans (Gwyneth Paltrow promoted a DIY coffee enema kit on Goop) to “keep the coffee out of your rectum and in your cup.”

My point is, yes, social media platforms enable the mass proliferation of stupid ideas at a level previously undreamt of, but whether TikTok, FaceBook, X or Bluesky, at some point I think it's really not the platform's fault. Who amongst us can counter the deluge of foolishness? And social media platforms serve other functions, some good.

Trump probably sold them the 75 day extension for a million per day and pocketed the money. Joking but not joking.

All I have to say is that if tariffs don’t work, other countries wouldn’t be tariffing America. We will win in the end no doubt.
Of course they work. If by "work" you mean they damage the other countries more than your own. Then the other countries retaliate. In the end the work is doing, and everyone is worse off.

They can have a positive effect if you want to protect certain kind of businesses (at a cost). But then businesses need time to adapt. Businesses want predictability. Sudden big changes are poison for the economy.

Thats why these sudden huge changes will lead to losses that won’t be recovered by any benefits the tariffs might have. This has happened any time a country has suddenly raised tariffs that much. If you don’t believe that (though you can look up the history), why is cutting countries off from imports the way we sanction countries?

Coffee enemas are not a new trend. Princess Diana was having those 35 years ago.

This whole ban is stupid because if they were really concerned about privacy and data collection, they should’ve passed data protection legislation applying to all social media platforms.
But that’s not what it’s about
It’s because if it’s an American company it’s then far easier

This is what Hallie’s when republicans are in control of the branches and they don’t have backbones. They don’t want to risk their own political futures.
