Funny how I don’t remember Apple fans saying how “crappy” Tile was when they were happily using them long before AirTags came along. It’s almost like you have to HATE everything that competes with Apple products.
Tile was crappy, I used them. I had several, they all worked like crap. Then they started to charge you just to make the just to make it work properly

i can say from personal experience of multiple tiles, they are absolutely inferior to airtag.

they do have a keyring hole though, so they've got that going for them.

Apple is abusing their position by offering the consumer free stuff? WTH

That's exactly what they are doing, they continue to offer free or cheaper options because of their position in the market (1 billion active iPhones in use, and counting). They've done the same with Apple Music and Apple TV+. I'm not saying they are the only ones who do it, but let's call a spade a spade.

The value in apple from the beginning has been its use of integration. It is famously one of the few companies in the tech space that doesn’t have divisions (I.e. MS has office, Xbox, azure etc..) that breakout profits individually. Basically apple makes an Ecosystem not just A single product. And part of the brands attraction is how those products fit together.

Airtag is another example of their technologies fitting together to give users benefit and make them pay the premium for an Apple device. If Apple dont sell a billion iPhones then there isn’t the network for airtags in the first place! I don’t see why a company is constantly threatend with being penalised for a) providing the best customer experience b) building from scratch the building blocks to provide that experience!

I just don’t get it. Without Apple tile dont have the machines for a business anyway! If Apple copied your patent or whatever I’d get it. But this is a free world. There is nothing stopping anyone from making a business in the same way someone else has made a business. Indeed that is part of economics and capitalism. If you base your business’s on someone else’s infrastructure and device sales then that’s the risk you have taken.

what legislation is going to protect us from these companies trying to destroy the great customer focussed experience we get from Apple and other “integration” focussed companies? It’s starting to get scary.

Apple is doing the equivalent of what Amazon has been doing to sellers on their marketplace. Adopt/recreate a smaller company's product and give it distinct advantages (in Amazon's case: search results placement, "recommended", and price).
I think Apple makes great products, and given equivalent capabilities between Tile and AirTags, most people would choose Apple's product. Especially so when considering the reoccurring costs of Tile. Apple going beyond competition to hurt competitors.
Well they just "Schiller: Can't innovate anymore, my ass!" 🤣

Instead of using their huge amount of money to build something useful that changes the industry(Cars,Rockets, manned Drones, whatever), they keep hunting unimportant little things like BT Tracking Dongles and other B$, just to destroy competition and extend their mafia practices.

It's simply easier that way, because they can't innovate anymore!

Not much different than giving everyone Internet Explorer when you had no browser market share but had 90% of the desktop OS marketshare. I'm pretty sure Netscape didn't mind.

Do you really think tv+ is going to be bigger than Netflix. And tile is not an accessory that should ever be a subscription model. It’s should be a you buy it and forget about it till you need it.

To be fair, the Tile subscription model includes free batteries and discounted replacements on the thinner tiles that don't have replaceable batteries..... so its more than just access to their network.... but it helps entice others into buying that network access if they weren't sure about paying for it.

FWIW, Tile has an agreement that allows Xfinity wifi routers to serve as a public Tile mesh network. Will they be providing access to Apple?

I'd just like to know how I can opt out of having my phone be a random beacon for other people's lost items. Apple likes to tout "privacy is a fundamental right". I'm going to guess you can't.
Me too. I would also like to know how to opt out.

Ableist much? Does it make you feel good and superior to be this judgmental?
No, not in any way.
I surely will need a BT tracking device someday, will be handy, just not "yet", that's why i don't own one!
But it won't be an Apple one, I prefer open systems.

I still don't get the complaint about the change to access permissions. Just have a pop-up in the tile app with a deep-link to the relevant settings screen. It's not hard and it's not a significant inconvenience for users. And the reminders that "Tile has been accessing your location in the background"? Surely this just reminds users they have Tile and it's working?

What is a significant inconvenience for users is that Tile's network is only other people with the Tile app installed.

For me, it's all a moot point until I can get a slim credit card sized airtag that fits into my wallet (the thing I misplace the most)

That's between Apple and Xfinity... and you can be absolutely sure Xfinity would love to work with Apple.

“To be fair” are not words you read often on here. Thank you for that information.

I still use a 3rd party flashlight app called “light” because you can program it to strobe on launch. I turn it on and put the iPhone in my shirt pocket when picking up food and have to walk between cars in the drive thru.

That's an example of a 3rd party app offering a unique feature that Apple's built-in app doesn't have. Good for that app maker. They've created a differentiator.

But overall... Marques' comment is true: Apple pretty much made the 3rd party flashlight app redundant.

I'd also say the same thing happened to QR code scanner apps. Remember those? You used to have to download an app just to scan a QR code.

But now you can scan QR codes with the built-in Apple camera app.

My God. They literally have access to use the Find My network. What more do they want Apple to do?
Open up their APIs.

Tile only can use the Find My network if they use Apple's app which makes it impossible to make the app any better than Apple's because it is Apple's app. Meaning Apple eliminates any possible software competitive advantage for third-party apps not to mention removing any incentive for Apple to improve the app (see the old joke about Microsoft making darkness the standard rather than fixing the light bulb).

So Tile has to choose to be hobbled on the hardware side or software side. Apple has trillions to spend on app development and airtag hardware - why not just make a better product rather than always trying to cut off the alternatives at the knees?

So then Tile's forced off their network onto Find My. But once on Find My, Apple products are again privileged with special abilities.
Tile’s not worried about Apple, they’re worried about Chipolo and any other massively produced tracker that could provide a lot of the benefits that Tile provides with not much effort. Tile SHOULD really be on top of this, ensuring they’re the number 1 Find My enabled tracker, but, as others have said, they’re not going to be making as much money without the subscription.
