A large section of the tech community is very upset with Apple right now, and going against Google would only make it worse.

A large section of the tech community has always hated Apple and always will. A number of them are regulars on this forum.

There's no need for Apple to pander to this fringe - the consumer market is far larger and more important.

Why shouldn't Apple have its own search engine? Why should Apple rely on Google for search while Google picks Apple's pockets with Android?

Do you people really believe Google is the only company on the planet that can design and run an effective search service?

Because it's an enormous job to run your own search engine, and Apple is famous for saying "no" to distractions of products they could do but not come in and dominate.

Plus - Google pays browser manufacturers (yes, including Apple) for making Google the default browser (as does Bing).

The simple fact is that in many ways, Apple and Google mesh nicely together, they get a lot of benefits off of each other. If peace can be made on Android ("We have made Google commit to making Android less like an iPhone so we are accepting the victory and moving on" "We have preserved Android's future by agreeing with Apple to do with Android what we were already doing so we are accepting the victory and moving on"), the two companies can resume their happy symbiosis.

The only company that could possibly be affected by a "no cloning" clause in such an agreement is Motorola. And a cross licensing agreement does not necessitate licensing fees.

The only company bound by a no cloning clause would be Motorola. But it also could be a statement of principles, "We have no interest in litigating our trade dress and design patent IP against any handset manufacturer who is not directly mimicking the look of the iPhone or iPad".

the reality is apple needs google more so than the other way around.

Considering that Google makes 4x more money off of iOS then they do from Android, please explain how Apple needs Google more then the reverse?

They also didn't collect a dime yet. From Samsung.

Don't they have to wait for the appeals to end? It's not exactly over yet.

Plus, Apple is already independent of Google Maps now. All they really use is Google Search. The weather and stocks have been Yahoo! since the start. And Google needs Apple so they can get ideas for Android :D

As Google's primary spokesman on this forum, you should hope you're right.

Riiight. I'm google's primary spokeman on this forum. It couldn't possibly be that I, as state before, am technology agnostic and enjoy products from ALL manufacturers. Even funnier considering I won a crapload of Apple tech products and only a few from other manufactures.

But whatever helps you sleep at night.

Google needs Apple more than Apple needs Google and thus the Apple/Microsoft agreement will never happen that you elude to as a possibility.

Google lacks patents that Apple acquired with the NORTEL purchase. Apple historically will pass on the licensing deal.

Glad you were able to confidently determine that no possible agreement would occur between these two companies.

Google in trouble?

do people here not realize Google stuff works on non Apple stuff?
that many companies use Google for their intranet searches?
or you know they make money off AdSense and Analytics?

there are some really delusional posters here

Who says that Google instigated the conversation. By all accounts they've always been open to negotiation, its apple that decided to issue a thermonuclear war on android, not the other way around.

please, apple just wins a 1 billion verdict. I think it's fair to say google's worried.

Apple has struck a number of deals with Microsoft. If that fight could be settled to both sides mutual benefit, given the long enmity between the two, why is it so impossible that Apple can't strike a deal with Google when they've worked together in so many areas?

"Koolaid?" Really? Why shouldn't Apple have its own search engine?

Yes, kool-aid. Primarily because search engines don't make money. Advertising makes makes. Second, Microsoft and Google have 3-4 times as many data centers that Apple has. Apple has no experience or expertise in running the scale of the back-end that powers a world class search engine.

Yeah Apple could blow tons of money doing it. Microsoft has blown billion over several years just for their distance 2nd place position behind Google.

Why should Apple rely on Google for search while Google picks Apple's pockets with Android?

The other primarily choice would be Microsoft. You think they have Apple's better interest in mind?

Given Apple inability to "walk and chew gum at the same time", it is Apple that is the issue. Apple's charge into the advertising business has not been a huge breakout success. There are significant gaps in the Mac line up right now.

Who's drinking the koolaid here? Why does Apple need Google exactly? They're already dumping Google Maps. They could easily switch to Bing for their search engine with no ill effect.

Seems with Apple's share of the mobile computing market (counting the iPad) that Google is very much the one in need of Apple.

It was foolish for them to start a war. And yes, it was Google that started that war.

You know what else makes money? Selling devices.

Google makes their money on ads. Apple makes their money on devices. Give users ad-free search to sell more devices.

Microsoft did pretty well with Bing, functionality-wise. True, very few use it. Primarily because Windows Phone's market share is next to nothing.

Yeah Apple could blow tons of money doing it. Microsoft has blown billion over several years just for their distance 2nd place position behind Google.

First, Apple has billions to invest. Apple search would leapfrog Bing in a heartbeat if it was the default on iOS devices. And they wouldn't have to resort to silly money-burning promotions like Bing Cash Back to try to buy users.

Apple would be foolish to rely on Google for search.

You know how else Apple could blow billions? Continue to support Google search while Google steals sales by giving its ad-based OS to every 2-bit KIRF manufacturer in the world for free.

The other primarily choice would be Microsoft. You think they have Apple's better interest in mind?

No, the other primary choice would be to create their own search engine. They have the means.

With the purchase of Motorola, Google has a lot of patents that could be troublesome for Apple.

And more, while maybe not a "need", both Apple and Google (and the companies making handsets) will benefit from a less litigious environment with all the risk and uncertainty that entails. The new certain can include certain protections for Apple, can't use these features like bounce-back, and can't try to clone the look of the iPhone/iPad, but that's also good for the handset makers, knowing where the landmines are so they don't step on them.

Android has gotten to the point where it isn't going away. Hoping it will is just wishful thinking and setting as your goal the destruction of Android is setting yourself up to fail. Apple isn't going away either, hoping for the destruction of Apple and it's products is just wishful thinking and a waste. Eventually, there will be rules of the road where both platforms continue. These rules can be worked out now, every side getting some of what they want, having some control over where it goes. Or hundreds of millions can be spent on litigation with no control over the final rules.

A deal just makes sense. For everyone.

you seriously think Apple can just spring up a search engine that would counter/surpass Google in a relatively short time frame?

if you aren't getting paid to make comments like this, I shudder to think the other possibilities of your agenda

You do realize there are more than one search engine to choose from on Apple's devices don't you ?

Perhaps he thinks that a search engine is only scrapping web pages and storing them in a database.

The one thing about this whole Samsung trial that fAndroids seem to be overlooking is the fact that Apple had tried to talk to Samsung to avoid litigation. This could've been a very different situation. Sammy just dirt want to listen. Hopefully google is smarter.

I really want to meet those "people familiar with the matter". They sound like nice people.
