Inevitable. Apple has too much of its money overseas, and doesn't want to pay the taxes to bring it into the USA. The only way to deal with the problem is to move its R&D to where its money is.

As far as avoiding leaks...my guess is the Chinese staff won't be told what they're working on or why. Design an IC with these specs, design a sensor with this range, lay out this board with these dimensions...don't ask what it goes into, or why. The less they know, the less they can leak.

Avoiding leaks is not the problem; it is blatant copying / theft of intellectual property. Chinese companies are already copying Apple designs, now Apple is giving them the blueprints. It will be much easier for a Chinese company to simply duplicate Apple's technology under their own name and there will be no recourse for Apple--we already know how justice is served in the Chinese court system.

China, India, Ireland, the Netherlands, the UK and the US are not the only countries in the world.

What ... Apple doesn't like China turning the other way with low cost phones?

I can only imagine what kind of product leaks will emerge from this new facility, that is unless its actually controlled by Apple employees, unlike Foxconn.

Well, i would probably say since it would be China built, its would probably be more accurate leaks than ever before. :)

Tim know nothing in Chinese , know nothing in Chinese government.

They are only know how to cheat / steal , enjoying obey the rules and law and lacking in morals.

btw : i am a 'HongKongers' , we know the dirty of China more than anyone do.

here will be shown on every Apple device

"Envisioned in California US"
"Designed in China"
"Made in China"

I am a big supporter of Apple, but I think they have lost their way! I no longer think they are an American company and have no interest in the quality of life for the American worker. China is just a place to put more foreign workers to work and take jobs from Americans. I think Cook is interested in nothing that supports Americans, that is clearly seen by the company moving most mfg to China and opening research facilities all over the world, just to line his pockets. I think if Steve was still here Apple would be going in a different way. I think Apple should rethink their complete direction, and drop Cook like a hot potato.

So, shouldn't all companies obey the rules and laws of the country in which they operate? Whether they are moral is another question entirely. Also, China lacking in morals, how exactly?

Getting real tired of Tim Cook , It's about time he goes !! Whatever happened to the Mac's that were going to made in the US ? China is not are friend they will/have steal/stolen Apples intellectual property.

Ugh. I absolutely hate this argument. The idea that companies should owe allegiance to a country is absolutely idiotic. Why should a company owe allegiance to any nation or nationality? Are Americans really that self-centered that they only care about themselves and their own country?

Essentially, the argument is 'It's better an American has a job than a Chinese, because Americans deserve a job more than a Chinese' Which is either racist, xenophobic, or really, just petty selfishness. If it's selfishness, at least call it that and be done with it.

Yeah China is important but the problem is your prices Cook, the Chinese don't have the same disposable income

They build the phones and other hardware, why not have them design it too? Then we fire all these silly American workers.

Yes. Apple has opened up App schools in foreign countries too. Their hope is to continue maximizing dwindling profits (due to lack of innovation) by reducing the costs of labor to produce products. If I was an entry level engineer at Apple Cupertino, I would be very wary of these moves.

This is were the difference between Jobs and Cook is glaringly apparent. Jobs believed in "innovation to profitability." Cook believes "maximization to profitability." Cook's strategy is failing (just watch the fallout from iPhone 7) and will eventually lead to 1997 all over again.

Sometimes you have to put principals & morals before profit & growth. Tim Cook is always making a stand for equal rights & the environment...time to really put your money where your mouth is Tim and stand up to China. That's the only way they'll change their human rights violations. Come on Tim, Think Different. Stop thinking about shareholders.

There is a lot of market potential in China and India. There is also a lot of talent to be tapped. (Not that the Chinese or Indians are inherently more talented. There are simply more of them.). It makes sense for Apple to expand there.
