Okay, that makes more sense. Still, even if the Apple Pencil was compatible on iPhone, it doesn't mean you have to carry it around. It's not replacing the existing UI. It just enables an option (drawing) if you need it.
I genuinely wonder how many times people have thought to themselves "I wish I could do a quick sketch/drawing on my phone that is better than what I can do with my finger"?

I always thought it looked a bit naff and pointless when the Samsung Note adverts showed it on TV but then I am definitely not the target audience for this functionality. On an iPad I can kind of see it, but not on a more mobile device.

On another note, either my ignore list is working, or the forums seem very courteous today. Some real thoughtful, polite disagreements. :)

I have only seen you speak with respectful tones. Good karma!

Let me quote...
When Steve said that "if you see a stylus, they blew it", the time was when phones were around 3.5 in display and having a stylus made no sense. You would have to keep a stylus that was bigger than the phone itself and using it was more of a headache. So,Apple went with the Multi touch. Your fingers were enough to explore the 3.5" screen where the applications were limited to calling, texting, browsing and playing games and the iPhones did that well with the hands only.

Yeah, the context where UI-navigation and nobody disagrees with him on that these days..

I´m quite sure he did not meant it like:
"All great artists only do finger painting, if you se a brush or a pencil, they blew it.."

Obviously, Cook doesn't know anything about his product. That's the main reason he never demoed any Apple product.

I would be upset if they offered it and charge an extra $100 like they did with iPad Pro. I have no desire to fiddle with some tiny pencil on an iPhone.

Has anyone actually held the pencil up to the 4.7" iPhone? It looks ridiculous. So unless they're making a smaller version of the pencil for iPhone I think Cook just misspoke.

Yep but Apple needs to find a way to stow the pencil when not used. Because that thing floating in a bag or a pocket is a loss waiting to happen.
Yeah, Apple really has to solve this problem before it can ship the pencil to be used with their iPad.

Naturally, here come the comments about Steve's stylus quote.

I'm sure this has all been said before, but did any of you ever use a device that came with a stylus 10 years ago? They required a stylus. They would not work without one. The screens didn't work with fingers. Finger input (and especially multitouch) changed the game in this market. Styluses then became a simple marker of primitive and limited hardware.

Sure, the Pencil has similarities with a stylus, but a Pencil is not a simple stylus. The Pencil expands the use of the device. I can still use an iPad without it, but there are limits to what fingers can do. The Pencil greatly increases the creative capabilities of these devices.

Remember the arguments about how an iPad is great for content consumption, but not for content curation? Sketching on the iPad with fingers was pretty ordinary, mostly because fingers are not fine or precise. The Pencil gets around that limitation. So what's the problem with expanding what a device can do by adding another type of input?

I simply don't buy the argument by people who rehash the stylus quote. Yes, it looks like a stylus, but the context is very different.

Having said that, would Steve have let the Pencil go to market? Honestly, who knows? Perhaps not. But that's not really the point. The point is that his quote had a specific meaning in a specific context. Things have changed a lot since then.

we want the Apple Pencil on the Apple Watch!!!!

In all seriousness, I love the Pencil on my iPP, and I would like it on my iPhone. I wouldn't buy it for the iPhone but since I have it already for my iPP that I always carry around, I can see only an improvement if this is proven true

The original Galaxy Note, 5.2" device, shipped with a stylus. Based on this, I'd say the pencil wouldn't look too out of place on a 5.5" iPhone Plus. Sure, the Galaxy Note stylus is smaller than the Apple Pencil but Apple could release a smaller version of its Pencil. And the Galaxy Note has a slot for its stylus, but then neither of the iPad Pro models has a slot for the Pencil and that hasn't really been a big hindrance to its adoption.

Oh this is good! I really love my iPad Pro and Pencil combo - I never got on with my Wacom and real life drawing is just full of mistakes. It's honestly the best thing for me and has completely rekindled my love of drawing. I really really hope the Pencil works with the next phone too. That'd be an incredible reach.

(though I can't stand their marketing as "it's not a stylus". It's a stylus. It'd be like calling their chargers "electricity replenishing devices". Seems like a weird way to get around Job's original quote. But you know, how about the idea that Jobs wasn't a god? And maybe his future vision was a little off)

Doesn't Messages in iOS 10 support handwritten messages/drawings? Notes too. I could see this working...

Yes it does, which supports the argument that the iPhone 7 (Plus) might support Apple Pencil :)

To those who quote the "If you see a stylus..."-comment:

He talked about the need to use a stylus to use the OS!
If you have to pull out a stylus to touch an icon on the homescreen on your device or to type on a device, then the company behind that device blew it!

Apple Pencil was meant to draw, not to touch the Facebook-icon on your homescreen to start the app!

That's why the introduction of Apple Pencil was neither hypocritical nor a bad idea, it's simply an additional tool.

Good idea: Having voice control as an option to do things in an OS -> "Siri, enable all alarms."
Bad idea: Requiring people to use voice control to do everything in an OS :) -> "Siri, open document XY, print it, then open the camera app and take a selfie of me."

He hated the idea of carrying it around with you and having the possibility of losing it. I don't think that goes away just because the phones are bigger.

Ha it's a stylus Tim.

Apple did blow it.

$100 for a stylus that is geared to a very small subset of users.

The stylus, as you call it, is not for the iPhone. It's for the iPad. At most, they made it compatible and I don't see anything bad with it.

"Tim Cook: Well we launched a pencil, not a stylus, first of all, and there's a big difference..." Uh, okay Tim.

You really have to admire Apple's willingness to go all in with their marketing. Pencil vs stylus is marketing semantics at it's best.
Using the device on the phone? Meh.
