Why would they have started from scratch?

One of iOS's biggest strengths was and still is that it is so close to macOS under the hood. That's why it got stuff like built in high performance PDF support, low latency audio, and color management years before the competition. Android wasn't really able to take advantage of a "big brother" OS with years of development behind functionality like that, and it's obvious.
Starting from scratch doesn't mean you throw out all the good stuff. It just means that you start a new team to work on a new operating system but borrow heavily from other teams.

I know of a ton of people who (reluctantly) learned to compute on Windows, then immediately switched their lives over 100% to mobile as soon as it became an option. That doesn't mean they don't miss the precision of a mouse, and the comfort of a keyboard, they just have such disgusting memories of Windows that they'll just choose to sit there on their tiny-screened phones and accomplish the required tasks "the hard way". I am convinced that an iOS device that came in a comfortable clam-shell design, and offered mouse support and the option to do some "traditional" Windowing, would sell like crazy. I also believe there should be a quality Android alternative, basically just like the obscure iView Gemini, but made by Google itself. Yes, I know Chromebooks already exist that can run Android apps to varying degrees, but I continue to believe that the ChromeOS model turns off a large swath lot of people who would in fact embrace an Android or iOS laptop paradigm.

iPad is just a big iPhone. My kids use them. But I sold my big iPad Pro shortly after it came out. Doubt I’d get another iPad for myself. Apps are just not there nor OS.

They should make a good laptop first.

Just curious. Why do you spend your time on an Apple website if you don't like their computers? I mean, it doesn't make any sense to me why you'd want to be here. If I hate something, I tend to stay away at all costs and focus on the things that I care about instead.

Hopefully he remains of this opinion. Hybrid devices are terrible. Cross platform software makes a certain amount of sense, though, particularly as many apps already have versions on both platforms. My only concern is about situations where the generally more advanced Mac version suffers from “dumbing down” ala iWork did a few years ago.

Why do you think I have a Hackintosh?

um, lets see... i think the current macbook pro's suck big time, but hey i still write this on my awesome macbook pro 17" from 2011! i also love macOS, think imac's are mediocre desktops, love the mac mini, the current mac pro, the ipad mini & the apple pencil (but not the ipad & ipad pro), love the iphone 3-5s+se, hate the iphone 6-8 & 6+ to 8+ and have mixed feelings about my iphone x (awesome hardware, but faceid is really not ready & a blown up iOS UI compared to a iphone 7 sucks big time). oh and don't even get me started about the iOS 11 AppStore redesign or iOS on a 12.9" ipad.... i refuse to use both.

oh and about unified macOS & iOS... well i think tim's right. but an ipad pro + a macbook pro? no thanks, i already have enough devices to manage. if i wanted more micromanagment, i'd have a linux laptop & android on all my devices. or a surface book 2.
now if i could load up a surface book 2 15" with macOS & iOS installations sharing the same configuration, apps & data, but switching between the OSes for laptop & tablet mode.... that would be HEAVEN.

Windows computer sucks so Apple should not make computers.
Windows phone sucks so Apple should not make phones.
Windows tablet sucks so Apple should not make tablets.
Windows sucks so Apple should not make operating systems.

oh wow, sounds like tim doesnt want to simplify mac to the point they are basically ios. where are the 'smart' posters saying that in a couple of years, the mac will be essentially the same thing as ios, after a couple of years now?

so many haters here spewing stupid stuff

What he really means is why sell one device when you can sell two. It’s all about getting us spend more on Apple products.

“We don’t believe in compromises...”

Proceeds to pull out dongle required to connect to anything.

Nooooooo.

This would be exactly the perfect product for so many people. Old people, students, etc.

People that pretty much only do web-browsing, facebook, email, and some photos..... but would like to dock to a keyboard and mouse when needed.
For those people, the iPad is sufficient. Do NOT confuse surfing the net and reading email with computing.

No, it's to keep the iPad and its uses separate from the Mac and its uses - which can require more serious computing power than is required for most functions of an iPad. Many Mac users are connected to several drives at once. Most iPad users function quite well with NO additional drives.

I imagine this is entirely possible without merging the two OS’s. When the keyboard is attached, the iPad would run MacOS and the MacOS version of an application. In fact, the keyboard could contain the boot volume for MacOS. When the keyboard is detached, the screen would revert to an iPad device and run iOS. Documents would transfer via Handoff.

I never want to see the two OS’s merged since Apple’s loyalty lies with pedestrian users/consumers rather than content creators/professionals. If an OS is compromised, it will be MacOS.

@TimCook,

Right Tim. So then why is the Mac still becoming a crap box!? Stop focusing only on the iPad and crap a whip in the Mac team, it’s time to ...

“Get back to work, Get Baack to Wooork!”
(Underworld, elder pit slave driver, 2nd movie voiceover).

If? Who says it hasn’t been already the last two years.

When I think of compromises, I think of when they introduced Launchpad in MacOS that resembled an iOS grid setup.

That was an interesting (albeit useless?) feature that I never wanted to use on my laptop. It was disabled right away.

I hate the way Apple has complicated ipad with a file system. Things were much more simple a couple of IOS versions ago.

We don't believe in sort of watering down one for the other

That's EXACTLY what has been happening to the Mac already.

I've used a Surface Book a fair bit and the form factor is great. It's amazingly versatile having both paradigms right there. If Apple went down the route of making a Macbook Pro with detachable touch screen I'd drop my (horrible) touchbar MBP in a heartbeat. (TBH I'll drop that 2016 MBP like it's hot when the next one comes out anyway, as it's a liability.)

I see a complete lack of vision about what unification could, would, and should mean. Where users can expect to go from device to device and expect the experience to be a natural shift. Tim. loves ya, but you are very short sighted in this respect. Not the visionary Apple needs to progress. Just keep doing your bean counting thing. You're damn good at that.

But it is.

Now a Mac with a hybrid screen like some of the Windows machines .... that I could see.

A car is not a replacement for a motorcycle. A hybrid would be a way of travel. Might even be fun, but it doesn’t have the benefits of a car or a bike. So you would need three vehicles. One, the hybrid, would not be good at car stuff or bike stuff, so it would be pointless.

I’m imagining one of those 3 wheeled convertible cars as a reference:)

this is not transportation. and actually they got it down better. you do learn to use a different device but the rules are there and applied to. all comply with. Gas Brakes, turn signals, lights. not to hard to figure out that transition. it's damn close to being as unified as it gets. This is a different animal because they, Apple, chose it to be. While MS marches, slowly, to the goal post.
