as if Al needed to make another film. By now the climate "issue" has become a religion. People either believe humans have "harmed" the earth's climate or they don't. There's plenty of reasons to doubt it or believe it.

Global warming is caused by...pay attention now....THE EARTH! It's been changing it's climate for BILLIONS of years!

Sorry buddy but in this case it is you who didn't pay attention. Current global warming is caused by humans and there are plenty of sources you can learn about it if you wanted to.
[doublepost=1488554742][/doublepost]
If it is caused by mankind then how did North America's glaciers recede before man ever set foot on the Earth?
[doublepost=1488543598][/doublepost]

Don't forget the Earth's population explosion in the 20th century:

Far easier to make us feel guilty about living and that we must tax some boogeyman vs encourage people to have less kids...

Not sure but to me it looks like you are trying to prove a connection between # of people to the warming of the earth. If so that so it looks like you get the point.
[doublepost=1488554794][/doublepost]
science is settled, there are no other possible causes at all...

SunSpots.jpg

Right. Global warming is caused by humans. Not by sunspots. Also there is science to prove just that.
[doublepost=1488555078][/doublepost]
Nah... that has no bearing on anything, but you were guilty before you born because of the great sin of consumption, committed since your ancestors. Repent!

The solution to the problem that human activity is causing global warming is not less consumption. This won't work. We need to develop clean technologies and the countries that invest the most will come out pretty well. Instead of you spend billions on wars and weapons to secure the oil instead of using that money to build clean infrastructure, technologies and what else is needed your trade deficit will turn even worse.

Yawn....

1. I'm not your "buddy".
2. Climate change is a naturally occurring change and has been for billions of years, this is simple fact.
3. We are nothing but a speck of sand on a elephants behind in the scale of this planet.

*Sigh* Apple (as righteous as they sound) is just another company at the end of the day. Why are people surprised that Tim is advocating renewable energy etc, yet is heavily focused on profit? There are many things Apple could do to be more environmentally friendly, buttttt they're in business to make money.

Everyone is out for themselves whether it be people or companies. Just live your life. Nothing is perfect and nothing will ever be. Critique and criticize all you'd like... Until you're blue in the face, but some things just won't change.

Very true; however, Apple pretends to take the moral high ground on environmental issues, when the reality (as you said) is that they are profit-driven and are still willing to make design choices that increase profits but also harm the environment. We (the customers) should call them out on it and demand better.

Don't like Apple? Don't buy Apple.
Random comments on MacRumors won't change anything. Speak with your wallet, or shut up.

You guys aren't hypocrites, are you?

Maybe we're already doing that? I would buy an updated desktop that's not an all-in-one, 2.5+ years old, or $3,000+, but such a product doesn't exist. So, I wait.

At the same time, there's nothing wrong with sharing our frustrations with others here as well as picking up insights from others' perspectives. I know it has brought me some clarity and helped me realize I'm not alone in my sentiments.

Um no. Chump is just going to outsource everything to CORPORATE AMERICA.

Bahahahaha and some you *think* that's gonna turn out just great for us consumers.

You'll see.

Btw - how's customer service working for you all now? That's meant for those you convinced -- convinced that think less government and more privatization means a freer more accountable society.

Right. Pun intended.

Personally I'd take a semi corrupted government system versus a totally corrupted privatized system that has full autonomy over us any day.

LOVE your reference to customer service. If I had a nickel for every time a republican referenced the wait at the DMV as an illustration of government incompetence... this is a great response. Thanks for that.

The fact you think that admitting climate change is real is a political troll should tell you the damage climate change deniers have already done.

Oh please...Al Gore is worth $200 million, for starters. Facts.

Oh geez, don't ruin this intellectual conversation with facts. They are all fake news anyway! o_O

I like how I get flagged about talking about future climate change that is coming. That's what Al Gore is talking about. I'm confirming it.

Yes, we ALL know Climate Change is coming, it's been happening for BILLIONS of years. How is you people STILL don't understand this? You DO realize when Gore started this whole thing, he was trying to SELL something? It's like the blind leading the blind. It's astounding.

to 1. For sure not

Climate change deniers in forums are often paid by the oil industry. Not saying you are one but maybe your are influenced by such.

The bottom line is that every product Apple has ever made ends up in a landfill. We just use them for a while before that happens.

Ultimately Apple is one of the largest polluters out there. Apple is responsible for producing millions of tons of hazardous e-waste.

to 3. Clearly you aren't and it shows.

Your first and last mistake is calling me a Climate Change denier, we KNOW IT'S CHANGING, just as it has for BILLIONS of YEARS, this is something we call a FACT.

The rest of your assumptions about what happens is just that...assumptions.

When you actually have something of substance instead of assumptions this conversation might actually go somewhere, as it is, your assuming stuff and I'm not going to play that game.

Global warming is caused by mankind. Anyone who understands a bit of science can learn about it. Some comments here sound either like they are coming from monkeys paid by the oil industry or come from complete ignorance.

Global warming has been in effect for a very long time; well before the industrial revolution. However, I do believe mankind has accelerated it and we should do everything in our power to slow those effects. All the burning of fossil fuels and pollution can't be good for the environment and our health.

All this talk of climate change, which the fossil records show happens on a cyclical basis and planetary science demonstrates happens to lifeless planets, too...yet nobody, not Al Gore, not all the billionaire philanthropists, not Tim ever talks about doing something about the giant, and I mean GIANT masses of plastic garbage floating out in our oceans, killing our sea life. Nobody wants to claim that mess. Or if there are people working on it, their efforts aren't getting the same press that global warming is.

There's no way of manipulating economies in tackling it, so year by year it grows.

Everyone goes on and on about the oil companies but nobody wants to own the absolute mess we individuals make with our laziness, throwing non biodegradable plastic trash out onto the streets or not cleaning up after a wind storm blows our recycling out onto the street. In my prior neighborhood, I once had to clean up all of my neighbors plastic waste after a wind storm because they were just too busy and important to do it even if our expensive cul de sac looked like a dump.

And meanwhile idiots throw plastic trash out of their cars or along their jog paths. I know because I go out with my dog and gloves and I pick all of that crap up before it can end up in our storm drains. I've seen these health nuts on their jogs finish up their water and just dump the bottle on the side of the path. They care enough about their health to jog and probably look down their noses at me for merely plodding along slowly, but they don't care about the health of their environment.

Black, white, rich, poor, doesn't matter what demographic you choose, there are litter bugs in every one.

I see plastic bottles everywhere, even in front of the lawns of houses that cost almost a million dollars. People walk by it. Homeowners seem blind to it even though it's littering their property. It's like everyone feels they're too good or it's too much bother to bend over and pick up some trash. Yet these are likely to be the same people who make a big noise about climate change. I just don't get it.

Don't get me wrong, I am all for curbing emissions and pollution of ANY kind. But I do think some aspects of pollution are more heavily politicized while others are practically ignored.

Plastic is biodegradable.

I keep seeing reports of plastic masses in the seas, and then a picture of some guy in a boat with a few bottles in his net, or staged photos of a guy in kayak near some coastal trash. This giant plastic mass should make for 'spectacular' photos and video from divers, yet there's none. I'm not calling bs outright, but the green movement has a credibility problem, and I don't think they deserve the benefit of the doubt on this plastic catastrophe in the ocean claim. Real pics or it didn't happen.

Picking up liter is a responsible thing on it's own, we all want to have nice stuff, but generating hysteria over it is purely immoral.

You have an interesting concept of immorality. To me it's immoral to be so careless as to turn a blind eye to the problem of plastic debris blowing about uncontained to damage wildlife.

I'm not generating hysteria over the problem of plastic litter. I've seen the plastic floating in the bay I grew up and spent most of my life around. I've seen the pictures of the stuff found in the stomachs of dead marine animals. I see all of the trash all over the place just walking or driving around. It's not hysteria if my neighbor and I can barely keep up with the amount of it in a "nice neighborhood." I can't imagine the conditions in the parts of the world that don't have regular trash and recycle programs due to corruption or lack of resources or where it's too dangerous to venture out and pick up litter, like it was in the neighborhood where I grew up, which was always filled with junk dumped in the woods.

Anyway about pictures of the oceanic clumps of plastic, that link and information will explain why there's not some large satellite picture of it.

As for biodegradability, the information in the link provided explains that it can take a long, long time for plastics to degrade and when they do, often it's just to break into smaller pieces (that marine animals ingest) or the conditions that cause plastic to biodegrade in a land fill don't exist in the water and the plastics don't break down adequately at all.

1) There has always been climate change but the argument being made by scientists is that the dramatic changes as caused by man's influence which makes what would have a natural process a lot worse resulted in the exaggerated extremes of cold and hot weather.

2) Yes, Al Gore is a hypocrite - I tend to be a person who prefers that those who do the lecturing are willing to walk the message as well but it doesn't change the fact that there are environmental challenges that need addressing.

3) Tesla cars aren't the future because over the lifetime of the car you're going to be just badly impacted by emissions based on production, recycling and dealing with the battery. The real solution is reversing urban sprawl and investing into public transport - it isn't sexy but that is the only real long term plan but unfortunately such realism is missing from the media's conversation on the matter.

4) I agree with the point that satchmo raises regarding making Mac's more upgradeable because the one way to help the environment is to ensure that things aren't needlessly thrown out or if they are recycled that recycling isn't the panacea given that it takes energy to recover and re-use the materials again whilst also acknowledging the fact that there will still be waste. End of the day it is Apple's decision to go for narrow market focus than trying to broaden it because if the broaden it then the market would be sufficiently big enough to being sustainable as a business model whilst ensuring that computers are kept for as long as possible and repairable.

Dear Mr Cook,

If you care so deeply about the invironment can you explain the following things to me?

Why has the iMac, MacBook Pro soldered Ram and isn't upgradable after purchase? They're getting faster outdated by doing so and go to waste.

The same for the iMac plus you can't use it as just a monitor. The hardware of the iMac gets (is already) outdated very soon while the monitor itself is still in good condition. However it's waste by this reason.

If you really care for the environment make your products more durable by solving the things mentioned above.

Thank you.

Apple stuff can be re-used just fine. I've never had to throw away ANY of my old Apple stuff. There are old iPhones of mine on their third/fourth user, an old MacBook and iMac (both from the last decade) being used second-hand, and even a very old iPad (first gen!) that still gets used by a very-non-techie friend.

Regular software updates and solid support make Apple hardware very environmentally friendly.

If Apple would stop soldering or glueing everything together and make it more upgradable like it used to be, it would be a real improvement for the environment. But it's Apple: money first.

But that would interfere with the obsession of thinness. Upgradeable components require some kind of socket while soldered items go straight into the board. You would need at least a couple of millimeters of extra depth which would make Jony Ive have a stroke.

Lol, I don't mind he gets it. It's good for the environment too ;). Also some fresh wind through the pipeline is also good. Someone who does research what customers really want and is eager to make the best.

Remind me again, who in the climate debate is on the moralizing 'repent all ye sinners' side? And whose 'priests' are selling tithes to absolve all these 'sinners'? Whose calling for 'non-believer' witch hunts in order to save us from this 'evil'? Why does man made climate change belief function exactly like 'original sin' theology in Catholicism?

Should be pretty obvious where the superstition lies. Hint: it's never with the skeptics demanding hard scientific proof.

In order for scientific proof to actually happen, there needs to be a testable hypothesis that can be repeated for the same results. This has never happened on the 'repent all ye climate sinners' side. Lots of speculation over data, and very colorful ways to present some data, along with dire 'predications' of the future. But none of that is cold, hard science, it's merely speculation by scientists, and speculation is how people manage ignorance when they can't/don't have the information or means to make a testable hypothesis thru experiment and reach a repeatable result.

I'd take a deep breath and try not to worry about burning fossil fuels. But what you should worry about are the measurements showing an alarming increased rate of decrease in rotational speed of the Earth's molten core. Slowing core is 'planet death', and there's an overwhelming scientific consensus to support this, so... Repent! And I guarantee that American automobiles, TV, iPhones and Rock n Roll, are all somehow to blame/tax for this too.
I wonder what would be solid enough data for you and other sceptics. Some people don't believe in evolution as there are plenty of ways to see holes in the evidence. We might be in earlier stages of proving the science of man made climate change but no point waiting for everyone in the room to agree on it before we do something.
