If a company innovates, then the company also makes product mistakes. Jobs did, Sculley did, and Cook is doing it. What matters is whether Apple recognizes these mistakes and gets better or continues to delude themselves that everything is ok and continues to do more of the same. Time will tell. But you cannot have innovation without making stupid mistakes.

The problem I am seeing is the lack of innovation. Larger and smaller are not innovations, simply refinement. Without innovation Apple is done for because everyone else can do it cheaper and with lower quality.

And you thought the iPhone hump was bad...

Two issues Tim.

1. You approved this fugly case, why? Is profit that important ? Brand reputation before $
2. When buying a case with an extended battery, the ability to take remove the iPhone is very long way down the list. Shockingly, once you the the phone in, for most people it will remain in that state, probably until they decide to sell it and want to clean it.

You have launched a product people are laughing at, including the faithful, time to play CEO and not the really nice bloke! This reminds me of apple before Jobs came back, some silly products that should never have made it past the conception stage.
Personally, I have a battery case, and I almost never use it, because a) it's too bulky, and b) it's too hard to take on and off. Plus, there have been many times I've used the battery case, and when taking it out of my pocket, the top detaches.
But point is, there are many people like me who have battery cases that don't use them all the time, only when, as Tim pointed out, we're out for extended periods of time, like hiking or traveling or at a festival or something.

No doubt this new case isn't great to look at, but it's probably more functionally satisfying than the mophie I have now, and not even because it doesn't work with iOS9, which is a whole other issue...

I'd like to congratulate iPhone on its fantastic news, and whether it's a boy iPhone mini or a girl iPhone mini (or twins!) I think we should all agree we just want it to be a healthy, happy baby iPhone it's carrying.

I used to believe the strk delivered mini iPhones. Reality was such a shock!

Now I keep hoping an iPhone 5s will marry an iPhone 6s so they can make lots of mini iPhones for us to play with -- adorable little things with their daddy's handsome 4" features and mama's brains.

Sad to say, some people believe certain families just shouldn't be allowed. But if such an iPhone ever does come into being, I am one who will cheer for it. Given the opportunity I will even adopt one.

What if it is born with only 16GB memory? Even then I will accept it. I will become stronger and will adapt.

Oh, oh, but I do hope for a memory of at least 32GB! And a strong, sensible battery!

[…startled, wakes up from daydream…]

hi

i bought this battery case as soon as i read its features. in japan.

here is what i like about it and how it is very different from mophie's products.

1. there is surprisingly little information out there about how the iPhone battery and the case's battery inter-react. the more you know about how multiple battery cells can benefit from smart regulation the more you like this case automatically. with this case its totally software controlled. something that probably only apple can do. mophie can't as 3rd party case only vendor, and other smartphone makers haven't even begun to think like this yet.

2. i always cringed whenever i needed to put the mophie ski boot on my iPhone. it was that difficult to remove.

3. and i did have places where having the mophie case on did affect its battery even more because it was a weaker signal reaching the iPhone.

4. the very nice touch elastopolymer is very comfortable.

5. almost all people who have mophie's cases need to carry around the USB micro cable. i hate carrying around extra cables. very un-apple. so i went on a quest to find an adapter that would allow me to use the Lightening cable with the mophie and i actually found one (male micro USB / female Lightening). the only thing is, it fits on so losely that it stops charging if it is only slightly moved a little). pass through Lightening charging is one of this case's best features.

this case is VERY apple if you think about it. and apple at its best. where function and form meld.

the failure is apple's inability to market this product with proper information. its a marketing problem. and the people in charge of marketing should be replaced (not just because of this problem but because they just fail repeatedly at overly and sometimes solely relying on shape and materials to try to sell products instead of using words and information and product descriptions to sell more product). in general over the past 5 years apple has become very poor at marketing features that people need explanations for.

people on this forum are good at finding instances where design of this kind is increasing at apple.
the protruding camera on 6/s.
the underbelly charging of the mouse.
the pencil sticking out of the iPad Pro.
to me this indicates that apple is saying in its products that ease of use (ease of charging) is just as important as sleek design, and that when ease of use and sleek design are in possible conflict, ease of use will be favored.
i like that. i agree with that.

people on this forum should really at least try to Think Different. at least sometimes.

Would I consider buying this case if I wanted a battery case? Sure. The case has nice features, but it definitely sounds like you've drank more of the Koolaid than the rest of us. First of all, why are you complaining about carrying one type of cable over another? You only need one. Why are you using a crappy, loose adapter?? To show people you use a charging cable made by Apple? That's inane.

So the marketing needs more words and information? You're clearly a marketing genius. And people need to buy into a product that you've already bought into? Yeah, that's thinking different.

But point is, there are many people like me who have battery cases that don't use them all the time, only when, as Tim pointed out, we're out for extended periods of time, like hiking or traveling or at a festival or something.

I don't believe that you spend $100 on a case that you only use occasionally. You buy a small <$20 USB battery charger for that (I have two that I got for free.) These battery cases are for heavy users who routinely run out of battery before the end of the day. I am surprised at how many people I see sporting them because of how bulky they are. I swear I saw a guy with a 6 Plus with a battery case on it a couple weeks ago which I couldn't understand.

Doesn't sound as if Tim has total confidence in this either. Trying to find ways of justifying its even existence, whilst skirting around the fact that it's clearly to make up for the crappy battery life of the iPhone.

Well, this is embarrassing.

Yep... it makes me think 'WHY DID THEY EVEN GO THERE?!?' Also, why directly compete with people making ugly 3rd party batteries?

1. The hump is stoopid, why not just use up the whole area with a bigger battery or use a thinner battery?

2. That ugly bottom bit where the connect is looks strange. But - it's a copy of how some 3rd party case makers have done it. Why copy an ugly idea?

3. I'm seriously starting to facepalm when I see Apple gear these days. Have they lost their way. For the first time EVER I was eyeing off cheapo $500 (AUD) AMD A6 laptops (with superior graphics to a $3000 (AUD) MBP and 16GB RAM) thinking hmmmm... it's not pretty, but is my ~30 year relationship with Apple starting to be over? I dunno - maybe it will be soon. I hate Android, but a Windows-based ecosystem might give me a no BS experience. Alternatively I could probably go a full Linux world.

Do these people have usb charger cables in their cars? work?
I dont get this charge issue.. Unless u are walking around all day away from your desk or car ..etc. constantly talking .

"You know, I probably wouldn't call it 'the hump,'"

Translation: "These are not the droids you are looking for"
or:
"Just shut the **** UP! If you ever want to interview your royal highness again"
or:
"If I throw a dog a bone"... well easier to just see what he really means:

Tim Cook = Brick Top

How you're supposed to behave with Apple:

It's honestly baffling to me that this got released. Sure, a few people will like it - the universe of Apple consumers is big enough that a few people would like anything Apple released. But the response has been overwhelmingly negative, and for good reason.

I hate to be that "Apple is doomed" guy, but some of their recent designs (iPhone 6/6s, watch, nMP) have really left me scratching my head. This is the worst, by far, but it doesn't portend good things if the design team thinks this is a good look.

Travel days are my torture test for battery life. I don't have any issues with my 6+/6S+ if I start the day at 100% battery even on my longest travel day. But with the standard 6/6S I think it's possible to drain the battery if you take it off the charger early, use it heavily, and don't/can't plug it in before bedtime.

Being honest, never seeing a battery case before or needing to use one, I didn't think anything about this was ugly, I only thought it was added weight I'd never want.

If you don't use you battery case often, you don't use them ever. Nobody remembers to charge the case before a hike...

Making it easier to take on and off is an excuse for the case itself. I expect Apple to make innovative products, not just make something that works.

Oh, my, god. Becky, look at her phone.
It is so big.
I can't believe it's just so round, it's like, out there, I mean— gross. Look!

I like big phones and I can not lie
You other brothers can't deny
That when a girl walks in with an itty bitty waist
And a round phone in your face
You get sprung, wanna pull out your tough
'Cause you notice that phone was stuffed
I'm tired of magazines
Sayin' flat phones are the thing

What's annoying about how he's defending this:

It's functionally badly designed and also basic feature lacking. It doesn't even charge a phone to full from flat and you can't determine when to start drawing charge from the battery case. So, the minute you put it on - it's charging your phone until it dies. Utterly useless - you'd have to take the case off the phone (and I presume carry or store it somewhere else on your person?) if you wanted to preserve the charge the case had until you needed it - other wise it would drain out.

It's the most ugly, stupidest pile of crap I have seen in a long time. Even beats those desperate iPhone 5c cases that looked like garish Croc shoes.

And the stupid thing exposed by the appearance of this battery case: we'll tolerate a camera bump and a smaller battery for a thinner phone. People really are happy with iPhone battery! Nope! We won't make the camera flush and fill up a millimetre or two with much requested extra battery: instead we will create a disgusting badly designed battery case to compliment it.
