No, this is definitely worse.
The puck was really designed to try to be pretty, but wasn't very practical.

This is practical but has not a chance of being pretty. What an ugly add-on.

I would be ashamed to have to use this.

Apple, you're losing it.
Good news! You don't have to use it.

He makes some good points.

I have a MOTA battery case and highly recommend it as it's less than 1/2 the price, looks great, more than doubles the battery life, and allows charging with USB Micro. Having said that, it's difficult to take out of the case. Though it's easy to put in the case and protects the phone well once inside.

I don't see all the hate for this case. If you don't like the design, don't buy it. Same holds true for everything in life.

Seriously, so sick of that criticism in particular. They would prefer NOT to be able to charge the Pencil directly from the device? It's a nice option and it takes 10 minutes. Yet the critics make it sound like the Pencil must be plugged in to the iPad all the time or something. You plug it in, go to the bathroom, and come back to a charged Pencil. OH NO!!
Haha yeah.. give people two ways to charge it.. ALL HELL BREAKS LOOSE!

I actually agree. I've owned MANY battery cases, for many models of iPhone, and I'm excited to receive my Apple battery case. A soft case like the silicone apple case I've had on my iPhone 6 for over a year.

Most cases are rigid, tough plastic that typically snaps together in two or more pieces. Bright LED lights that you can't disable while it's charging, and on/off switches that I've never understood the point of. This case fixes all of these issues, and is only thick where it has to be. It's not thick at the top and bottom where the battery isn't. Yes it's weird looking, but actually looks like it will be comfortable to hold.

The only drawbacks are it's less mAh than most of these cases, and it's expensive. Considering the smart features, partially slim profile, antennas, and lightning port, I'd say those things are easily ignored.

People need to get off their high horse about "design" and "Steven Jobs wouldn't have allowed this". This is a mostly elegant way of providing additional power and doing a decent job of it.

Perfectly said. I own a number of battery cases too. They're great for adding power but the Apple battery case certainly sounds better. No need to press the button to power the phone and having to wait until power is low to turn it on. No silly status lights. And most importantly, no need to use a different charger than your normal iPhone charger.

I'd buy one of these in a second if I was in the market for another battery case.

Definitely not a fan of most of Apple's current designs, but I actually kind of like this case. Though not saying the design is great or anything, if I had/wanted a 6/s, I'd totally buy it. That being said, I still think it's stupid Apple refuses to just put a bigger battery in the damn thing.

As with all such articles, the belly achers will be forming a company which will develop a product that has twice the features at half the cost and their production facilities will never catch up to the demand. And on the same day, there will be two moons in the sky and pigs will be flying over them. It is easy to complain with words, much harder to deliver product.

hi

i bought this battery case as soon as i read its features. in japan.

here is what i like about it and how it is very different from mophie's products.

1. there is surprisingly little information out there about how the iPhone battery and the case's battery inter-react. the more you know about how multiple battery cells can benefit from smart regulation the more you like this case automatically. with this case its totally software controlled. something that probably only apple can do. mophie can't as 3rd party case only vendor, and other smartphone makers haven't even begun to think like this yet.

2. i always cringed whenever i needed to put the mophie ski boot on my iPhone. it was that difficult to remove.

3. and i did have places where having the mophie case on did affect its battery even more because it was a weaker signal reaching the iPhone.

4. the very nice touch elastopolymer is very comfortable.

5. almost all people who have mophie's cases need to carry around the USB micro cable. i hate carrying around extra cables. very un-apple. so i went on a quest to find an adapter that would allow me to use the Lightening cable with the mophie and i actually found one (male micro USB / female Lightening). the only thing is, it fits on so losely that it stops charging if it is only slightly moved a little). pass through Lightening charging is one of this case's best features.

this case is VERY apple if you think about it. and apple at its best. where function and form meld.

the failure is apple's inability to market this product with proper information. its a marketing problem. and the people in charge of marketing should be replaced (not just because of this problem but because they just fail repeatedly at overly and sometimes solely relying on shape and materials to try to sell products instead of using words and information and product descriptions to sell more product). in general over the past 5 years apple has become very poor at marketing features that people need explanations for.

people on this forum are good at finding instances where design of this kind is increasing at apple.
the protruding camera on 6/s.
the underbelly charging of the mouse.
the pencil sticking out of the iPad Pro.
to me this indicates that apple is saying in its products that ease of use (ease of charging) is just as important as sleek design, and that when ease of use and sleek design are in possible conflict, ease of use will be favored.
i like that. i agree with that.

people on this forum should really at least try to Think Different. at least sometimes.

No one thought to ask, "why not make the iPhone a bit thicker with extra battery in the first place & make the camera flush".

because thats less than 1mm and you couldn't just fill all that area with extra battery, you'd only be able to make the current battery slightly thicker, which would probably give you about 3% extra power, which would be largely indistinguishable.

So, seeing as there is no on/off switch, does this mean your internal battery is in a permanent "charging" state until the external battery runs out? Assuming this is what happens?

Please Apple apologists stop this now - the new iPhone is a backwards step in regards to battery life and Apple should just hold their hands up and admit in their quest for ever thinner products they got this one wrong.

To now come up with this appendage and try to claim it looks cool is to treat their customers with contempt.

I think that it is a good thing that Tim Cook is giving us his thoughts on this subject. That is a vast improvement over the deafening silence that we typically hear from Apple about customer concerns.

I wouldn't call it the hump

So that means I shouldn't send this to Tim Cook?

It's a nice idea, but I'm surprised that they didn't realize that people would dislike the shape. A very different direction than most of Apple's designs.

I like the thinness of the 6/6s, if it was the same thickness of the 4/5 it would be such a pain in the ass to use with one hand.

This works for me but you clearly prefer something a big more bulky, that is what 3rd party accessories are for.

Yes, but I think this could be fixed by software...

Why not make it curved (like the Magic Mouse shape), where the top and bottom, say... 10% of the case, where it curves back to the thickness of the phone, is just silicone, but with no obvious seam? Still flexible enough to put on and off, has silicone around the antenna if that's important, and doesn't look like a tumour.

If they had just made the iPhone internal battery 50% bigger I don't think anyone would need this case and it would still only add a couple mm to the phone thickness.

Hello everybody. BruceEBonus here. I say, I've just been out and bought one of these spanking new Apple battery case jobbies for my iPhone 6. A great little stocking filler isn't it? Apparently it does have a proprietary Lightning port - but it can offer nearly one more full charge to my phone which means it will last almost two days now. Jolly decent, eh?

Apparently it's elastomer hinge design makes it easy to put the case on and take it off again. On the outside, the silky, soft-touch finish of the silicone exterior feels great in your hand and ... oh no. What am I saying?

Gor' blimey. I've just blown eighty quid on a bloomin' massive carbuncle to make me phone bigger, uglier, heavier an' even more overly expensive than it was already. 'Streuth. I knew I should've gawn for the 6 Plus now - and even they only last 'alf the time them S6 Samsungs does. I reckons I've just paid a right ol' load a nicker to make up for the shortcomings of the original battery design ain't I?

Just you watch. My missus'll be in a right two an' eight when she finds out. She's gonna kill me!

I agree, although I would like one with a fake Hans Solo sticking out of it. It's truly form following function. It is better than every other battery case except in capacity (and price, but hey, it's Apple). I love that it charges the iPhone first and discharges itself first. I love that it will fit on a dock. I love that it shows the battery meter on the phone. I love that it has a pass-through lightning port. I love that it seems like it's easy to hold (from what reviewers say). I love that's it's easy to take on and off. After the charge is gone, I can just put the bulky case in my backpack or car.

I actually like this case better than most things Apple has made recently. It seems to make the right compromises (at least for me). Also, a big, bulky case is never going to look good. Now I gotta figure out how to 3D print Hans Solo.

It's Han Solo, unless I'm missing something (and Yes, I am a huge Star Wars geek).
