Actually, I believe Apple will make a 2-in-1 device... when they figure out that they would earn enough to cover the loss from tablet and laptop sales. The way Apple Music has been created. It eats into the profits from iTunes Store, but Apple decided (correctly I believe) that streaming is the future. The day they decide convergence is the future will be the day you hear Ive and Cook praising the revolutionary, amazing and life-altering Apple Thingummajiggy, available in gold, rose gold and silver.

"I don't need to know how he uses his computers because it should be dead obvious to anyone that he's a hypocrite."

Understand. You have no idea how he uses his devices/computers, but you can make judgments with respect to the honesty and veracity of what he says. And somehow that translates to hypocrisy, though you're not able to articulate how.
...

It doesn't matter. TC is going to say whatever he is told and makes Apple look good to Consumers and the Wall Street mob. It is perception of Apple and TC represents Apple.

For all we know he may be a closet Surface Pro user (BG gift set ;))

Of course they wont. Apple needs you to buy two or more devices.

Convergence means selling less overall.

Microsoft is able to bring about convergence devices because there would be no cannabilism of their own market. Up until the Surface Lineups, there were no "Microsoft" hardware devices. They could come up with a convergent device and not have to lose out on either tablet or laptop sales.

IN Apple's case, where they currently make some good money on both Tablets, AND laptops, they would lose out possible sales of likely both. For a company whose profit is their primary motivation, this would seem counter productive, and therefore, not a logical choice to make.

Apple has cannibalized some of its own products already, such as its iPhones done to the iPod and the iPad Mini / iPhone 6 Plus has done to its iPad. Apples not afraid of cannibalizing its own products, as long as its another Apple product.

Good points. It certainly makes sense for Apple to explore ways to make an iPad a convergence device even if the current technology doesn't let them make one that meets their goals for size, portability, weight, performance, etc. Even so, convergence doesn't necessarily mean the same OS; it could simply mean seamless interoperability. What's important is figuring out how to make a device that meets people's needs not just getting to one OS across devices.

Correct. And we already have one. It's called "continuity".

Both the keyboard and mouse are wireless, and take standard AA batteries.

So when I travel for work, I do have the company provided Windows Laptop and my iPad. In the hotel room, I have never taken out the Windows laptop, I always just use the iPad. For me, it is faster and quicker for things such as email, web browsing and checking in for my next flight. I have apps for all the airlines I use, which are faster than going to their websites, plus the boarding passes are then on my Apple Watch.

Oh that's what I was confused about. You can use battery powered keyboards and mice with the surface pro's as well, no wires, not sure if you thought that was a limitation of windows but it's not. I have my surface pro set up that way, it's in the dock so you can't see any wires, keyboard and mouse are rechargeable so no wires except once per week when I recharge them after I leave the office.

And when it results in higher revenue and profit.

How do you connect your monitor? Wires?

As a daily user of both Windows an OSX and IOS, I can say I much prefer using both OSX & IOS over Windows. So the surface pro is really nothing of interest to me. Like I said, when on the road I never turn on my Windows machine, I only work off thr iPad. For me the iPad pro is turning out to be a nice upgrade from the my iPad Air. Once the keyboard and pencil arrive, even more so.

Where is the vote down button???

Tim Cook seems so lost and disconnected from the real Apple customers...

They could even make "more" money. The surface pro4 I am looking at ( i7-16GB-512GB) cost 2199$ ! more than a macbook + an ipad.

Surely you would be looking at the MacBook pro not the MacBook? The MacBook has a core m3 Processor. Considering you said you are looking at a i7 processor you wold be looking at the MacBook pro?

Also are you actually saying you would buy the cheapest iPad pro ? As in the stupidly small 32gb version?

Lols

MacBook pro 13 inch with same specs ( memory, i7 processor last generation etc) = exact same price as the surface pro 4 you mentioned.

So stop bloody manipulating price comparisons unfairly.

Continuity is one nice first step to true seamless interoperability. Ultimately, you won't know which device stores the actual document because you would simply open and work with on either device without first transferring it from one to the other. For example, you could create a document on the iPad or iPhone and when you open up the same program on the Mac the document would immediately be available for further editing. Or, if you started to watch a movie from iTunes via server it would automatically transfer the movie, starting form the end and going forward, so you can finish watching it later on the iPad (or Mac) when you are away from the server. In essence, the concept of "the file is stored locally here" becomes outmoded; and goes beyond simply storing everything in the cloud to use local networks to handle transfers when both devices are on a local network and a wide area network when they are not, so no actual storage needs to be done in a cloud; other than the local devices become their own "cloud."

I know the feeling, I can't last more than a few days with OSx before I have to go back to Windows, it's just much more intuitive for me. iOS, well it's waaaaayy too primitive for me to even consider, but I'm just happy I don't have to make the choice and can have my full OS wherever I go.

And yeah, we are down to one wire!! But I'll take that one wire for the flexibility of detaching my surface and using it as a tablet, which I do very often at work. The odds even when I have to connect any USB peripheral as my wires will be nice and hidden with the dock, where with the mac you are still going to have wires coming out of the monitor. I think we're all stuck with wires one way or another.

Your 6 years of dutiful proselytizing here among the heathens will be bountifully rewarded in Microsoft heaven.

To have the same specs than a surfacepro4 i7 you are right, you need a macbook pro of... twice the weight ! and still no tablet use. So I reitarate my answer. If Apple could make a tablet of 786grms with the specs of a surfacepro4 they could sell it for 2199 or more and make money. But it would kill the underpower macbook, the nowhere macbook air, the heavy macbookpro and the ipad unpro ! This is why cook is Ballmerizing his answers, denying that MS has given many people what they want, not the other way around.

Yes, if only Apple would sell a device that costs $2200+ instead of laptops starting at $899 and iPad Pro at $799...

899 for a very basic laptop non retina + 799 for a 64GB tablet + 2 power supply + several adaptors = almost 5 pounds... I'd rather buy ONE machine for 2200 at less than 2 pouds with i7-16Gb-1TB-displayport-USB-SD . Unfortunately it is not made by Apple .

Interestingly when I google this sentence, the only things that come up are Macrumors and something called Storyclash that is actually a link to Macrumors. Perhaps Tim said that only to o9ski, in secret? Typos and all.

Exactly. Continuity is the future, so it's a right start by Apple for now. At the end of the day, the devices you use disappear, what is important is what is being produced. Apple iCloud will play a very important role - as well as a sustainable income for Apple in an unforeseeable future.

Well, I started with MS-DOS and owned machines running Windows up until about 9 years ago. My home Windows machined crashed again pretty bad, and I was really pissed and started to reinstall everything, when my wife snuck out and bought me a Mac. I figured Macs where for kids and almost returned it. Now 9 years later the whole house is Apple, and we would never downgrade to Windows. In my day job I am FORCED to us a company provided Windows machine. I did put an Apple sticker on it to try to motivate it to perform better!

When ever I need to do a presentation, I always do it in Keynote, then export it to PowerPoint for the others who are imparted with their Windows machines. I do feel bad for you Spindoc....

No need to feel bad for me, IMO I've got the best hardware and software by a mile. I feel bad for you, forced to use an OS you don't like. Is that Apple sticker on the windows laptop a form of protest?!?:):)

Even though he got the size wrong, we all know what that poster meant.

The actual quote is this:

  • "We've put a lot of thinking into screen size and we think we've picked the right one."
    - Cook on 4" iPhone, dissing larger displays of competitors, Quarterly call, Jan 2013

And of course, before Cook said that, his boss Jobs made similar comments over and over again through the years, about products that later came out. That's what makes it so funny to hear Apple leaders dissing anything they don't sell... at least, not YET :)... and why people half jokingly assume such a denial means a similar product could be in the works.

  • What are these things good for besides surfing the Web on the toilet?
    - Jobs dissing tablets to his staff, 2003
  • "There are no plans to make a tablet. It turns out people want keyboards. We look at the (idea of a) tablet, and we think it is going to fail.
    - Jobs dissing touchscreen tablets at All Things Digital, 2003
  • "I’m not convinced people want to watch movies on a tiny little screen."
    - Jobs dissing handheld video players to Mossberg 2003
  • No native iPhone SDK, because third party apps could "bring down" a cell network.
    - Jobs dissing opening up the iPhone to developers, interviews early 2007
  • "The whole conception is flawed at the top because people don’t read any more.
    - Jobs dissing the Kindle or any book or magazine apps, NYTimes 2008
  • "There are clear limits of how close you can physically place elements on a touch screen before users cannot reliably tap, flick or pinch them. This is one of the key reasons we think the 10-inch screen size is the minimum size required to create great tablet apps."
    - Jobs dissing smaller than 10" tablets, Apple quarterly earnings call, 2010
