i hate when he says this. is this going to become a every year thing?

My mom said, "Cook more talk less" i agree.

Doesn't he realise what a cliche it has become? Stop using the same superlatives over and over again. It loses all impact.

Same with his tiring "only Apple could... yadayada" or "... so I'm really excited"
He needs a new manuscript.

"He demurred when asked about specific possible products, but said anyone "reasonable" would consider Apple's upcoming products to be in new categories."

anyone reasonable - hilarious - 2014 will be about product evolution NOT innovation.

Move along people, nothing to see here!

please don't be an iwatch, it's not a new category or a good one to go with next. The tech industry doesn't need a watch revolution.

It's like reinventing the iPod, it's not a current trending product category.

You only have to look at the galaxy gear and see that no one and i mean no one wants to do anything on their watch that the phone can't already do.

If it's a health monitor/pedometer/pulse/maybe i can understand some purchasing for some altruistic desire to know every stat, when health is actually just about doing a bit of exercise with consuming the right number of calories in a balanced way. You really don't need metrics to do exercise at all! I would actually not appreciate apple entering this area as it makes no real sense to the rest of the product line up and ethos.

Didn't he say this last year

At some point he needs to take responsibility due to the lack of new products

Tim Cook should get credit for not giving into investor pressure and just cranking out new product because the market is screaming for it…. however, I wonder if he's trying to hard to make everything perfect as possible and holding products too long? I guess we'll find out this year.

Time for Tim to #*?! or get off the pot and give us something "wow".

I'm a believer.
Everything comes to those who wait.

And to all those "Apple is so far behind now, they are not innovating anymore"-rants:

—Would people have been happy had Apple released the Samsung 'smart'watch with an Apple logo on it?
—Would people have been happy had Apple released the two-completely-different-OS'es-in-one-package that is Windows 8?
—Would people have been happy had Apple released the Logitech PowerShell?
—Or the LG G Flex, the Pebble, the Fitbit Force, the Chromecast, the Nintendo 2DS, the Acer Aspire R7, all the added features to Android on Samsung phones ... etc. etc.

Exactly where is the innovation that has left Apple in the dust? What are those exact products that are both innovative, useful and close to perfect?

As far as I can tell, Apple is at the very front of this race. Revolutions like the touch-enabled smartphone, the tablet and the App Store don't and won't come around every year, but when they do, I feel convinced that Apple will play an important role.

Until then we will have to do with useful, incremental innovation — Like, say, retina displays, fingerprint readers, awesome battery life, more processing power and everything becoming thinner.

Just fix all the bugs and bad UI choices in iOS7. I wish MS was a ballsy and Apple was and call them out on how awful iOS7 is. It truly is their Vista and honestly I never had an issue with Vista. iOS7 Crashes ALL the time and drives me nuts. My iPhone 4s never crashed under iOS6, it's why I never switched to Android or Windows Phone because it was bullet proof. Now it is just garbage, even my over priced iPad Air crashes 3 or 4 times a day - especially Safari.

In other news... The sky is blue...

Nope ... it's not.

Anyways, I totally agree that all the negativity regarding Apple, its revenue or ability to innovate are totally out of proportion.

The MacPro is a risk, the MacBook Pro Retina was a risk, iOS7 was a risk.
All of those products made a statement to the consumer that said:

"We would like to change the perception of what customers should buy."

Notebooks without DVD, without harddrives, without Ethernet.
All of these could have failed big time and lots of people complained.

But Apple designed it in ways that only leaves one choice to the competition. And that is "Design something similar."

As long as there is no product that is not only cheaper, uses a preferred ecosystem or just has a larger screen, Apple is save.

For the last few years, there has been no innovation at all from any hardware vendor. I will not list all these products.

Ofcourse Android phones have a bigger market share, but innovation is not something that anyone is really focusing on.

damn i bought my air launch day morning and use it for almost everything and i have only experienced 3 to 4 crashes total not per day. and i even updated from a beta install lol

It'll be news if he said "We're not working on anything much. In fact, WWDC will consist of iOS 7.1 and OS X 10.9.2 being released."

He always promises great products!

At some point he needs to take responsibility due to the lack of new products

Um, 2014 just started. Is Apple required to release new products on some fixed timeline? What if the stuff they're working on just hasn't been ready to go to market? Should they go to market with a product that's not ready or is crap like Galaxy Gear?

What lack of new products? Last year they released the iPhone 5S, 5C, Retina iPad mini, iPad Air, new MacBook Airs and a completely new Mac Pro.

True: There's been no new category but that doesn't happen every few years.

If Steve had presented the same exact Mac Pro that Phil unveiled no one would doubt about the health of innovation at Apple. Apple's biggest loss seems to be showmanship, not talent.

Reminds me of a story from engineering class: It goes like this...

You're hired to move a 10 ton boulder from a farmer's field. You hook up levers and ropes and slides and rollers to help you shift the thing. You spend 12 hours huffing and puffing in the beating sun, but the thing doesn't move an inch. You're covered in sweat - totally exhausted - but in the final analysis, you've done no work.

(Work=force x distance)

We hear rumors have some nice stuff, iWatch, iTV etc, but so far its only vaporware. Apple needs to step up their game under Cook. imo, Jobs was a hard driving man who forced people to produce, Cook seems to be a bit more laid back in that department and the result is that we only get a longer iPhone (iPhone 5) and a smaller iPad (iPad Mini)

The nMP is truly the only new product. iPhone 5 - longer iPhone does not count as a new product. MBA was around when Jobs was. A plastic iPhone does not count as innovation, similarly nor does a small iPad.

I'm not say apple isn't releasing new iterations of existing products, what I am saying is that they not rolling out new stuff that Cook keeps promising that is coming.

What's next for the iPhone 6 - being larger like the Note 3? That's not innovation, that's just producing variants of an existing product.

But it's not vaporware. Apple has not announced these products and then failed to deliver. They're rumours about new products they might be bringing. Personally I'm looking forward to a potential iWatch but would rather wait to see Apple get it right.

Any new product/category Apple announces is going to be scrutinized to death. I'm sure Cook & Co. know this and want to make sure there isn't another maps fiasco. Samsung can release a POS like the Galaxy Gear and no one cares. If Apple releases a wearable device that's not ready for prime time the stock will get hammered, there will be calls for Cook to be fired and the Apple is doomed meme will be louder than ever.

Are there any new consumer products/categories out there that are making you go "wow" and wondering why Apple isn't doing something similar? Whenever "iWatch" stories come up most of the comments are that people don't care and haven't worn a watch in years. In fact, of all the rumors floating out there the only one that seems to have people interested is an Apple TV box with an App Store. Aside from a larger iPhone (which isn't a new category) what exactly do people want to see from Apple? What is the new product that they're waiting for?

Oh my god I have to comment on this for you extreme and I do mean extreme level of complete ignorance. First of all it will be an iWatch (or whatever they call it). Secondly it is DEFINITELY a new category, one which has never been done before, period (and no it isn't about giving you notifications or telling time). You look at the galaxy gear to see what completely unintelligent morons can bring to the table (which is nothing). The galaxy gear isn't even in the realm of what Apple is making.

Lastly, and most importantly, you know absolutely nothing (can't stress this enough) about human nutrition and health, based on everything you said. I'm actually appalled (but not surprised) at the sheer ignorance of your final statement. It's inaccuracies are that great.

"If we can't do that, we're not going to force ourselves to hit a price point that makes us produce a product that we're not proud of because we lose who we are in that. We're not going to do that."

Hello iPhone 5C.

Also, how often does tim cook use the words "proud" and "products".

There's a drinking game for ya at Keynotes.

I disagree. I think the 5c was Apple's answer to having to create aluminum cases for two generations of phones at the same time. It was never intended to be cheap (and it certainly isn't). I share your cynicism of marketing and CEO-speak, but I think this was a pragmatic move to handle demand better.

iOS 7 is amazing. Sorry you have awful taste :) hope you get used to it though, isn't going anywhere :)

What game changing product did Apple deliver between the iPod and iPhone besides iTunes Store? Most of what happened under Jobs would be considered iterative or just incremental updates by today's standards.

iOS 7.1 will come out in the spring alongside the new Apple TV iOS, and all new reimagined Apple TV which is a new product category, taking it out of hobby status, and revolutionizing TV (albeit not by way of an actual TV, but instead the upgraded box).
