I think the lack of 1080p on the ATV2 when it was released was more surprising than 4k on the ATV4. 1080p TVs were more widely in use and more content was available for 1080p in 2010 then 4K TVs and content is today.

I read a business insider article about the fast adoption of 4k TVs, but even in their research they predicted that only 10% of US homes will have 4K TVs by the end of 2018.
I concur. Hadn't apple JUST dipped its toe into HD video when the ATV2 came out?

iTunes doesn't even offer 4K content. People forget that Apple's first priority is their own ecosystem, not the users.

Its an attempt to keep folks from drinking the Kool-aid. What is the compelling reason for buying this Apple-TV..Is it any more compelling then say the new rechargeable magic mouse?

I see, you are the anti-Kool-aid police then.

Has it occurred to you that other people may have wants/needs different from you?

Personally, I find voice-based universal search compelling enough. I would pay far more than $200 for this, if it actually works.

You'll tend to find most of the 4k advocates are people who fell for the marketing hype and bought a 4K TV, and now they have to get a 4k streamer (and tirelessly put down 1080p ones too such as the ATV4) to help justify their purchase to themselves.

Also the only reason the other streamers have 4K is so they can have a spec sheet advantage over the ATV, yet most people won't realise that it's a crippled version of 4k but that doesn't matter, the marketing circle is already complete.

I just don't get it
I watch Netflix and rent iTunes movies and use AirPlay and iCloud music library for music
Why would I need or even just 'want' to upgrade to this?
Especially since the old perfectly capable model is now only just $69

If that's all you do then I don't think you are the target market and should stick with the Apple TV you have. If you want to get the app store, games and some of the other features then buy the new one. You said it yourself the basic model is sticking around and it's sticking around for those that don't need the advanced models.

Sorry for you guys and gals that have a 4K TV. I understand your frustration. Of course you want the new Apple TV to support 4K. The unfortunate reality though is that in the United States, less than 1% of household TVs are 4K. (Just for reference, the world-leader in 4K TV adoption is Japan which currently sits at 7.3%.) Now, couple these statistics with the fact that the vast majority of homes are not equipped with the bandwidth or data allowances to support 4K streaming, and it's pretty easy to see why Apple did not include the ability to support 4K in this version.

Don't get me wrong. I know and understand why you early 4K adopters are clamoring for 4K support. It's just that we're not quite there, yet.

Apple's ecosystem cannot exist without the users. You are looking at this backwards. When there are enough users actually using 4K and enough content providers providing it then Apple will also step in. They have done this numerous times and will also do it now (1080p, NFC, large screens on iPhones etc).

I'm still unconvinced... I have 3 devices to watch netflix already and considering the amount of time I spend watching tv, it's pretty hard to rationalize it....

I'll probably get it anyway ;)

In the same boat. My Google Nexus Player works good enough.. and I am Running PLEX, VLC and KODI on it...

you are very correct, Apple will wait until the delivery mechanisim is in place with enough bandwidth to support 4K before releasing a 4K device now. Remember Apple cater for the masses now.

Same for me.

Trying to decide on 32 or 64gb. I don't plan on putting that many games on it or movies. I just don't want to be kicking myself later for not spending the extra $50
Still 32Gb is quite a bit of storage if you don't plan on putting apps/games or movies on it.

Just trying to think what else could eat the storage

I was a lot more excited for this before they announced it than I am now. I will buy but I may end up returning if they don't get it right from the start

Where my TV is located in the bedroom, I sit too far away for me to be able to notice the difference between 4K and 1080p. In the living room I've got a huge projector that is old and 720P. I would definitely notice a difference going to 1080P, but even projecting onto a 100 inch diagonal screen, the couch is a bit too far back for 4K to be a clear difference. If I had a 70 inch TV I'd definitely be too far back. I think this will be the case for a lot of people. Our TVs are too small and our couches are too far from them for the jump to 4K from 1080p to make much difference.

I'd jump up to a 1080p projector, but those things are still a thousand bucks! I wish the technology dropped in price like TVs have.

I'll probably pick one up once it's widely available and the CBS All Access pass is available. Been wanting to go back through Big Brother and Survivor.

I see several people have made that statement, and I don't disagree, it's just unfortunate people can't watch the 4K video they shoot on their 6S's on an Apple TV. I think that makes some people question if one part of Apple knows/cares what the other part is doing.

Hopefully they'll update the Apple TV 3 OS to match the new UI at least.

I think only games can eat that storage. Content would if the services allowed you to store it. But they won't and you won't need to anyway. No way will productivity related Apps get back enough to eat the other storage. But games can devour storage if the AAA titles get ported to Apple TV.

Going to get it at the Apple Store for my discover 10% back using Apple Pay!

Just sucks I can't use it in the app :-/

The one thing you lose with non-linear devices that aren't directly a DVR is the ability to know where you "left off" watching a show. If all networks become apps, then you are leaving it up to the app developers individually to tell you which episodes you've watched and which you haven't. For people that have past-generation Apple TV, do app developers generally give you an indicator of which episodes you've watch of which shows?

I think I'm going to be bold and stick with the 32Gb, like I said if your ISP is good enough just stream from the cloud.

Can't Apple just put it out and say "come 'n get it"? Why does every release of every product have to be an "event?" I'm tired of all this preorder cr@p.

apple tv newb question - but can I do air play mirror my laptop - with video only playing on my 65', while the audio is actually playing from my laptop so I plug my headphones to listen to sound?
