Set-top box is so 2010. In 2015 you can buy Smart TV that comes with apps and you need zero cables. If you want to play then connect PS4.

Apple is getting really tired when they release stuff like this. They used to innovators now they re-release old technology. I had first set-top box in 1982.

Smart TV is laggy. its apps have terrible UI, and many of them are not even working. its ecosystem has weak developer support.

and you need to upgrade a new TV if you want better "Smart" tv. just give me a TV that functions like monitor, like PC monitor.

Plus Siri LOL.

Ever since Siri exists it hasn't done one thing I asked for. Not even close to the subject I am asking about.

"Siri, play: Be Yourself.
Siri: Connecting to face time with Abe
proceeds to dial that number.

A typical real interaction

Wait until you try it on the ATV4 before you knock it. Trust me. It works so much better than it does on iDevices.

Apple said Siri has only 5% error understanding your command and it's the least in the industry. That's WWDC Keynote, long before Apple TV event and with my experience I believe them. If it can understand me it will understand anyone.

I already have two Apple TV 3s, I need a third one for my new 4K TV. It's disappointing that the new Apple TV doesn't support 4K. I imagine the next generation, to be released next year, will support 4K with an old A9 SoC that is already in this iPhone 6s Plus.

I'll still buy it just for the tvOS, App Store, and better interface.

I think I'm goign to pass on this apple TV. The same people who said HD wasn't needed are going to defend apple's choice to not use 4K, but for me, it is needed. i'm going to need to use my smart tv interface... so still waiting...

While speaking at tonight's WSJDLive conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook revealed that the new Apple TV will begin shipping next week. Apple will begin taking orders for the new set-top box on Monday, October 26 with shipments beginning at the end of the week.

The new Apple TV, which Cook also said is the "foundation" for a new type of TV experience, features an A8 processor and either 32 or 64 GB of storage. It also has support for a full App Store, which Apple says will help "modernize" the "linear TV" experience that most consumers are familiar with. The new Apple TV also comes with the brand new Siri Remote, which allows users to use Siri to easily sort and find their favorite TV shows and movies.

The new fourth-generation Apple TV will be available for $149 with 32 GB of storage and $199 with 64 GB of storage.

I hope it will be able to load a vpn app so we can access UK netflix etc

I just don't get it
I watch Netflix and rent iTunes movies and use AirPlay and iCloud music library for music
Why would I need or even just 'want' to upgrade to this?
Especially since the old perfectly capable model is now only just $69

Plex app

Finally!
Hopefully we get an Infuse app on release.

Infuse is a nice stand alone, But Plex is much more useful.

Hmm... have to say it's down to accents. Just tried that a few times and works great for me

Will the requirement of cable service no longer be needed with the new Apple TV?

The majority of channels on my Apple TV are hidden because they require a cable TV subscription in order to function.

with that remote and 64GB without expansion?

You know that the problem with Smart TV's is 95% of them cannot be updated at all... so sure you can buy one but the Hex core in that 4k Sony for $2000 you get now is going to look very slow in 4 years...but you can always update the brains with a new external box.

I don't see all the fuss about the lack of 4k. There are very few 4k sources and many new TVs and receivers do 4k upscaling. Maybe 4k videos from the new iPhones will drive 4k adoption? If I get a new 4k TV 5 years from now when there is more content for it, I will move this Apple TV with its 1080p TV to my bedroom.

I have a problem with the new remote. It's too symmetrical, I'm always picking it up upside down (face up but touch pad at the bottom).

About 4K, I had a theory that the hardware supports it and it will be turned on someday soon. Does the iFixIt teardown confirm or deny this?

I'm probably in the minority here but I'm going to wait until I see how the App situation develops, and specifically what networks push out "live streaming" or "on demand" apps similar to the ones they have for iOS. That would be my only motivation for upgrading from my ATV3. I don't use iTunes so none of the other new features interest me.

Yes, Not only do I want a Vudu app but I want a good vudu app, I can do vudu on my Xbox one, the movies look great streaming but the app is such a hodgepodge of Clunky UI. I would like the new ATV4 apps be not only functional and stream well but be laid out better frpm a useage standpoint

My girlfriend and I have two ATV3's: one in the bedroom and one in the living room. I have the ATV apps we watch most (ESPN, HBO, Showtime, CNN, FXNOW, NetGeo) connected via our cable subscription. Plus, we have our Netflix and Hulu accounts connected to both devices too. The ATV4 never really appealed to me, other than the "fancy" upgraded UI. We'll stick with our ATV3's for the time being.

Can someone explain to me what this will do that an old Mac mini won't? Because that's what I've got hooked up to my TV right now and it works a treat—plus in a pinch it does all the other things a computer can do, and on a massive screen too.

Lock you into the walled garden Apple infrastructure.
