Hell yeah, my CC has been ready since they announced it. Can't friggin wait. The only downside is no Amazon Prime but hopefully Apple's subscription service will be as good or better.

Do you guys think it will go on sale at midnight? I want to set my alarm and get up and order it so I get mine before they sell out.

There's no such thing as enough storage.
haha true but I think for the ATV I really can't see me going over kill with it

if anything in the morning I would have thought, bit like the iPhones etc (for UK time)

You'll tend to find most of the 4k advocates are people who fell for the marketing hype and bought a 4K TV, and now they have to get a 4k streamer (and tirelessly put down 1080p ones too such as the ATV4) to help justify their purchase to themselves.

Yes! This is called "post-purchase rationalization" which is a cognitive bias. It's very similar to "confirmation bias." We are all susceptible to it, and probably suffer from its effects all the time - particularly in this Apple-forum. Surely my decision to buy the ATV4 is highly influenced by my brand-loyalty to Apple and my emotions somewhat. However, it seems some folks suffer from it more than others, and this 4k crowd is a prime example.

I am looking forward to the new Apple TV, but there is one thing from the new Apple TV that I am going to miss big time. I can not believe Apple have left off the optical out from their new box. That is a huge frustration to me as I can no longer directly connect my Apple TV to my amplifier. I am going to have to spend more money on buying tiny HTMI to HTMI & Optical Out boxes that will allow me to connect my Apple TV to my amplifier, which is an expense and hassle I was hoping I wouldn't have to deal with. Going to be a while until I have all that set up!

I think the lack of 1080p on the ATV2 when it was released was more surprising than 4k on the ATV4. 1080p TVs were more widely in use and more content was available for 1080p in 2010 then 4K TVs and content is today.

I read a business insider article about the fast adoption of 4k TVs, but even in their research they predicted that only 10% of US homes will have 4K TVs by the end of 2018.

Yes, but what percentage of Apple's customers (and potential customers) will have 4K TVs? Apple's customers tend to be affluent early adopters... the same people buying 4K TVs.

I don't have a 4K TV yet... but I'm planning on getting one soon and I'm a bit bummed the new ATV doesn't have support for it. For one thing... just having it there will generate a lot of new 4K content which is sorely needed...

It's HDMI... and you should really look into picking up a new receiver that allows you to plug HDMI directly into it. The simplicity of the solution definitely makes up for the hit to your wallet.

Did they ever actually say that the 3rd generation will have access to the App Store? There's a good chance I may have missed it but I really can't recall that being confirmed
no it won't, hardware doesn't support it and it'd be a lot of work for the software to work with both different CPUs...

What is everyone buying 32GB or 64GB?

Curious to know this as well. My phones I always get the max as I like to have room to grow. The Apple TV, I am just not sure if I need 64gb. What can be stored on it? Only games? If that's the case, I won't be doing a lot of gaming on it. If there is something else that can be stored, I would love to know so I can be prepared.

we've had a receiver with HDMI&ARC for quite a few years now it seems odd this other guy (and many others) do complain about it

I'm still unconvinced... I have 3 devices to watch netflix already and considering the amount of time I spend watching tv, it's pretty hard to rationalize it....

I'll probably get it anyway ;)
I don't even have cable so I rarely watch "TV". I do watch Netflix and ATV movies rentals. But the reason to get this is that I believe the App store will be big. Having apps to play game with friends in the living room instead of investing in a console will be big (because I don't really care for call of duty). And this hopefully is the springboard platform on which Apple will build the future for the living room. the only lament is that the homekit is still so sucky. they need that so I can pull it up on the ATV and control the entire house (and next the world bwahaha).

I usually go with the same idea, but yeah if it's just games I won't be using it for gaming so I may just grab the 32gb one

no apple doesn't do orders at midnight... and they probably won't sell out, they aren't like the iPhones and they are a lot easier and cheaper to make

Set-top box is so 2010. In 2015 you can buy Smart TV that comes with apps and you need zero cables. If you want to play then connect PS4.

Apple is getting really tired when they release stuff like this. They used to innovators now they re-release old technology. I had first set-top box in 1982.

Smart TV's are on the decline right now because of the poor performance and poor app ecosystem.
My Sony TV has apps, very slow to launch and sluggish. Same with the Samsungs and LG's.
I'm thankful for my APTV3 as well as my PS3.
SMART TV's were a fad. Not anymore.

Bring on the new APTV :)

I am much more disappointed by the lack of an optical output for audio than the lack of 4K. My gorgeous 4K TV will continue to ba starved, but the 2 channel audio side is much more important to me.

I agree - I know I've done it many times before and am still guilty of it haha :)

Truth is 4K isn't ready right now, not because of lack of access to content, but because there is virtually no true 4k content out there. Couple of movies and TV shows here and there but the vast majority just isn't. Most stuff is downscaled to 2k in post production so most "4K" stuff you will see over the next couple of years will be upscales.

True 4K content will start to drip through over the coming years, but it won't be worth purchasing 4k equipment until at least 2017 when the majority of content is actually filmed in the resolution.

For now 1080p run through an OLED screen will give you the best PQ for the vast, vast majority of content.

100% agree, my Samsung smart tv was something 'cool' at first and haven't touched it after that because the Apple TV+PS3 in my case as well, are so much faster and easier to use

Apple's ecosystem cannot exist without the users. You are looking at this backwards. When there are enough users actually using 4K and enough content providers providing it then Apple will also step in. They have done this numerous times and will also do it now (1080p, NFC, large screens on iPhones etc).
I agree with what you're saying, but I don't think the ATV would support 4K before its offered through iTunes.

Since the price difference is only $50, it seems wise to go max. You never know what could come along in 6 months that might need extra storage. Or you might be surprised how much you might get into using it. When the iPad was coming out, I didn't think I needed it - until I bought one :)

So you have a 4K TV but you don't have a receiver that accepts HDMI?!? That is just weird. Time to upgrade your receiver!

I think it will be a long time before 4K is offered through iTunes. A typical 4K movie will run about 100GB in size (vs. 4GB-8GB in size for 1080p).

Apple will need considerable upgrades to its own infrastructure to support mass streaming and downloading of 100GB files. And internet providers won't be happy about all that extra traffic on their networks. 4K may have to wait until the next generation of home internet, IMO.

So I just got a 4K TV and I never really looked until now...this thing doesn't do 4K?

Of course it doesn't, New Apple TV 2 will!

Yeah, they lost a sale to me as well for this. Granted I still only have a 720p tv, and still using my ATV2 but I am looking at upgrading to 4K sometime in the next year and I just don't see any point in spending money on something that isn't 4K capable at this point. I will just keep using my ATV2 until they release one with 4K support.

That doesn't really make sense to me. Netflix offers 4K currently in many regions on the planet and as soon as the new House of Cards is released everyone goes wild. The infrastructure is already there, and I'm pretty sure that Apple has planned for this in their expansion of data center capabilities.

I do concede though that Netflix' compression algorithm causes artefacts with moving elements on screen. It certainly needs optimisation but it is and won't be anywhere near 100 Gb in size.
