There are lots of barriers countries can put up which aren't tariffs in order to give themselves an advantage. In the case of many of the countries we trade with, different regulations are imposed that make trade from the US difficult. No matter who is the president at the time, the threat of tariffs should be used if negotiation fails to remove / limit those barriers.
Agreed, but aren't those also forms of tariffs as well? In cases of food, those that import to the US need to have our food labeling laws (among others), but that is a one time cost, with a very slight recurring cost of the ink it takes to put the information on the package.

Also, I think that the President has shined the light on a problem, and is using these tariffs, or the threat of them, to effect change. Love him or hate him, he does seem to be a man of action, and that probably helps him when these things are negotiated.

Hm. Sorry, but when was "something fair for BOTH sides" EVER an US-American goal...?
Let's just say that when the US spent its blood and treasure in the 1940's and didn't keep the land it acquired, and gave it back, under the condition that the countries of western Europe stop going to war and killing each other every 20 years.

That was kind of a win-win, wasn't it?

most people in this thread seem to think that US has the technical capability and human resources and flexible supply chains to rapidly produce millions of iphones.

lol. funny!

* and those who says china does not have good infrastructure in electronics and cutting edge research, you guys have no idea about the purchasing power, political push and sheer amount of *original* research and development work they can do as a nation. it is scary but at the same time, commendable.

Props where they're due as Cook is one of the few corporate executives with enough sense to actually stick with Trump regardless of the PR hit you're going to get from being anywhere near him.

The reality is that the U.S is stuck with Trump for the near future and the only way to do something about his haphazard way of running the country is to try to convince him of wiser policies by simply advising him. Heading for the hills like so many of his advisors have done so far only leaves more policy up to his lack of expertise in crucial policy matters.

Don't get me wrong, I dislike Trump as much as the next guy, but it's not certain you can actually get him to leave office like Nixon did and if you can, he's not going to be replaced by someone reasonable like Gerald Ford. No, he's going to be replaced by Mike Pence, who's deeply religious, strongly anti-abortion and a rampant homophobe to boot.

North Korea has NEVER had a leader meet with the leader of South Korea or the USA. Not once since the Korean War began. They have never once agreed to dismantle their test sites. Your unwillingness to recognize this for the historic moment it is truly reveals your bias. You don’t care that this is good for the world. You just want to bash Trump. Donald Trump has done more to fix the Korea problem than any president in history. You might hate him but that is a fact. The three hostages released without ANY concessions from the US is another example of why this time is different. We get it, you hate Trump. That has no significance when it comes to the fact which is that he has done well on this one. If you want people to take your arguments seriously, it would help to be honest.

Im also waiting on your specific examples of how America is suffering under Trump...

Looks like NK hates John Bolton as much as everyone else should.

The 'meeting' looks like it won't be happening...

Oh, and the NK agreements were with the UN, and they have violated practically every one of them. trump thinks he can 'fix' things. So far he's only made things worse. LOOK AROUND! The environment is worse, the stock market is in a bubble, education is failing faster, predatory leanders and for-profit prisons are a booming business. Food is getting worse.

But the 0.01% are making serious money! Serious obscene money. And trump moved to 'save Chinese jobs', because China is giving his company $500,000,000! He's a fool. A high priced fool at that.

Here is how we are suffering:

1. There is the economy. Oh..wait, that is good.
2. The jobless rate....Ooops a 20 year low.
3. Minority pay and unemployment ..oops again. Higher pay and lower unemployment here too.
4. Border security - Can't complain here either. Finally a president that is trying.
5. Our relationship with our Israel - Well that is good too. We finally decided to follow our own law and put the embassy where it is supposed to be.
6. Trade deficit - He is trying to address this as well. Let's see how this one pans out.
7. North Korea issues - Better than ever. The can was kicked down the road to President Trump, and he decided not to ignore it.
8. Terrorism - He is making headway here as well.
9. Taxes - Wait..my paycheck is larger and I am not rich. Did the media and Trump haters lie to me again? A simple google search proves this was not a tax cut for the wealthy.
10. Excessive regulation - Looks like he pulled back many of the hand tying regulations holding businesses back from being a success.
11. The Red line - He enforced Obama's red line.
12. Russia - Tough stance with Russia.
13. Paris Climate Agreement - He withdrew from a bad deal for America.
14. NATO allies - Was able to convince them to put in more money.
15. Iran Nuclear Agreement - This trash is finally gone :)

If this is suffering, then I hope I continue to suffer for a long long time.

This comes up all the time, MacRumors was started just for rumours but has now evolved into so much more. I for one welcome tech related articles.
Especially the ones about android phones. That's exactly what I come to an Apple news site to read about - Android phones.

Remember when Apple used to update their computer hardware on a regular basis? :D
No, that was before my time.

You previously wrote: "In that case, it couldn't be convincing to Trump since he doesn't read."
Apparently you are one of those frustrated and angry people.

Not really, it just shows that you can't distinguish a simple joke from a serious statement.

Valid point. I do digress however. I’ll go out on a limb and say a note with “No” is something Mr.Trump could absorb. :apple:

Well, since today I'm even more curious about what Trump is mentally able to absorb since Trump doesn't even understand the difference between HPV and HIV according to Bill Gates who spoke about this with Trump. https://goo.gl/GUhBYx

Indeed. I must concede to you. Prolly has a reading disability he has hidden his entire life. Rich parents made it easy to get by as a young Trump all the way through undergraduate. Then years of being a NYC Mob Realestate Thug also made it easy to conceal. The Consigliere's do the written work. He simply says Yes, or No. Not hard to to conceive at all. :apple:
