You're spinning things way out of proportion man. Relax. We'd all love to see Macs replace PCs in more and more industries. But manufacturing is a tough one. OSX only recently just got AutoCAD, after being absent for how many years?

Macs have always had a monopoly in the Arts, Windows on the boring stuff. Personally, I find that a much more attractive position for the Mac. Let boring Windows run boring industries. Macs have always attracted the creative arts personalities, and continues to dominate marketshare in those fields. Look at Microsofts ad agencies, they all use Macs. So it works both ways. Its not a big deal.

Once again, I never said I was annoyed by the picture showing the factory using Windows. I honestly didn't care. I know how the tech industry is ran. My entire point (because you guys are taking it so far against me here) was the ignorant thinking of "we should only live in a Microsoft monopolized world." Hey, I didn't say that, someone else here suggested it. I simply replied to it being ignorant thinking, which it was.

And BTW, AutoCAD didn't "recently" come out on Macs. It's been out for 4 years and I think you're getting the words monopoly and dominance mixed up. Apple has never had a monopoly on anything. They dominate the recording industry.

Who said that? I think so far everyone on here has said, why would or should Apple create it's own software for their manufacturing lines when perfectly good software exists?

And you have taken it as we are all saying Apple shouldn't create ANY software?

I would've loved to have been the person on that AppleCare call:

"Thanks for calling Apple, this is Tim Cook..."

"Just down the road in San Antonio" is like a three hour drive!

Wow, I hope you and your thumb-uppers don't represent what our schools are pumping out these days.

The drive is a little over a hour. I have done it many times when I lived in the Austin area.

Good to see Tim out pressing the flesh. Wonder if he met Austin brass to discuss why nMP deliveries were so bad?

Unclear

To the author-

Thanks for the article.

I am unclear about one thing...

Flextronics' Mac Pro facility is roughly a mile from Apple's new Austin campus, which is actually an expansion of the company's long-standing operations campus in the city. The campus expansion is major effort that will see Apple investing $300 million to add at least 3,600 workers at the site by 2021. The overall project will encompass roughly one million square feet of space, with the just-opened first phase including two out of a planned six buildings on the site.

It is unclear whether it is Flextronics' Mac Pro facility that is being expanded with $300 million, etc., or the "long standing operations in the city."

can you clarify?

It being cheaper would have made you happier I bet :D

Probably not. How much something costs really don't mind me when I enjoy every moment of it. I only care about how much something costs when I didn't enjoy it. I only regret having spent money when what I got in return wasn't worth experiencing.

----------

I wonder if Tim Cook answered the call.

"Hello, this is Tim Cook with AppleCare. How are you today?"

That's exactly what I was wondering. I kind of feel like calling AppleCare just to see if Tim Cook answers. Also because my Magic Trackpad seems to have simply stopped working as of yesterday after 2.5 years of working flawlessly for me (well, except for occasionally needing the batteries changed). But I don't think I have any Apple products covered by warranty right now...

What is Windows XP doing at the intersection of Art and Technology?

Call me negative, but i hate these kind of things. Do you think Tim would be walking around chatting to factory workers if there wasn't a camera following him? It reminds me of when the likes of David Cameron or Barack Obama tour around saying hello to commoners. Would they really do it without any press or camera crews following them? Naaaa

Sure why not. I don't need Apple wasting engineering resources coding software that already exists. They have a hard enough of a time just doing OS X and iOS.

Uh, I believe it was you only in slightly different words. As I said and I quote: "I don't need Apple wasting engineering resources coding software that already exist".

And I replied, why not? With your thinking the world will remain in a Microsoft monopolized world. That's an ignorant response IMO and it does nothing more than stifle innovation.

I'm going to close this and I will no longer respond no matter what you or anyone says because I know who and what I am dealing with.

Technically, isn't this assembly, not manufacturing?

Indeed, It's probably not much more than thousands of people at home do every day, making their own PC's

Which of course it not manufacturing your own PC it's assembling the exact custom computer you want from your chosen parts that are right for you.

(And we all know many want to do with a Mac also, but are not allowed)

Fitting circuit boards into cases, installing fans, graphics cards, media slots, connecting up storage devices, CPU and Memory etc etc.

Let's be honest, this made in America is really just a small PR exercise.

With the exception that those parts in the Mac Pro are custom.

Sorry to be sophomoric, but pretty sure Tim tucked a boner under his belt in the second photo.:eek:

You're post shows so much ignorance, Seriously. With that type of attitude things will remain the same. Is that what you want, to be monopolized by Microsoft? It's not like Macs are just a hobby. That's exactly what you're suggesting.
There's absolutely nothing about Windows in general that can only do that type of work. It's lazies that refused to create and consumers with your type of thinking that will keep everything the way it is. Very poor.

If you knew how the manufacturing process works, you would not be making such uninformed statements.

Indeed, Custom circuit boards.

Are those circuit boards and the components on them made in the US ?

I don't know, do you?

It's not just the circuit boards, but just about all parts are custom as far as I can tell, cooling system, power supply and case etc.

Let's be honest, this made in America is really just a small PR exercise.

It could be either. If you're planning on slowly ramping up production skills & facilities, then a low-volume, high-margin product would probably be the best choice of 1st product.

Or, as you say, it's also the easiest one to move States-side for PR purposes. Doing so with higher-volume / lower-margin products would be a lot more tricky.

If/when they move iPhone production to the US, we'll know. :)

Thrice the salary for the workers, thrice the quality of life, thrice the quality, and thrice the average age of the workers.

Let's face it, having 12 year-olds work for 15¢ an hour near factories that spill toxic chemicals into rivers and spew toxic fumes into downwind major cities is not a sustainable way of doing things. Cheap, fast, good...pick two.

Source for 12 year olds working and source for 15 cents an hour please.

Yes, it IS manufactured in the USA

They are just assembled in the US. All the components are still manufactured in China.

Despite the link wording, this is called manufacturing, Steve:

http://www.apple.com/mac-pro/video/#assembly

By the way, as far as I know, no company manufactures surface-mount passive components in the USA. On the other hand plenty of other components that the Mac Pro uses, e.g. the CPUs, are manufactured in the USA.

So stop the nonsense.

There's a light gray bar at the top, so I'm guessing VMWare Fusion or Parallels. When you're talking about electronic hardware and testing equipment, a lot of it only has Windows software so it's not like they have a choice.

Also, can anyone spot anything that might look like a Mac mini on that photo?

If only they knew someone that could make them some MAC software...
