one would think if the pre-orders were truly great, they would be shouting it form the rooftops with extreme excitement.

instead apple is taking the diplomatic approach. apple never takes the diplomatic approach.

Did they do that with the iPhone 6? If not, why should the watch be any different?

so inferring off of a grin is correct, but inferring off of the use of the word "great" is wrong?

no double standard there.

You can infer anything you want.

I saw a very happy CEO grinning after the launch of a new product.

Watch the video. Did he look troubled?

No. Far from it.

Either he's the best actor in the world... or he is truly happy. I think the latter.

There are two possible ways it could be:

  1. Tim says "great" but orders are actually terrible.
  2. Tim says "great" and orders are actually phenomenal.
We've seen other CEOs get caught in #1 (Samsung "smooth" sales)

But I don't think Tim Cook has to do that.

I guess we'll have to wait and see. It's Friday... and we'll probably get a press release from Apple on Monday.

But again... I don't think it will be bad news.

no, he says reactions to the device itself have been "extraordinary", not the pre-orders themselves.

additionally, the article points out that despite customer enthusiasm and mostly positive reviews for the watch, apple stock has reacted sluggishly. that most likely means internal numbers aren't exactly pleasing the market at this point.

Yeah, because the "market" knows Apple's internal numbers. /eyeroll

he must be thinking of all of the $$$ he is making today
(even for products that won't be sent out for a month, or two, or three)

I know you're joking but technically Apple doesn't recognize revenue until it's delivered so he isn't making $$$ until Apple fulfils the delivery. ;)

I'm glad you got this ALL figured out by parsing a few words from a random interview. Do you read palms too?

I'm not sure if this has been mentioned (don't have time to scan the comments of every watch post), but the employee at my try on today told me that at 12:01am on the 24th (your local Apple store time), you can go to the Apple store online and reserve an :apple: watch to pick up in store THAT DAY!

So those who passed for now because they don't want to wait until June, if you are quick at midnight on the 24th you could walk into the store and walk out with your :apple: watch on release day.

He also mentioned that you have to set a pick up time and if you miss your time, it will go back into the store inventory and you lose your chance.

So for those who still want day of, there's still hope!

Actually, how many pre-ordered is almost irrelevant at this point. It's not going to show the true demand. I know one person who went to pre-order but decided to just wait when he saw "June" delivery date. I'm betting there are a lot of people who's not going to pre-order something that will take couple of months to deliver.
I actually think the demand will pick up later as people get to see it in action.

That's true.

The Apple Watch has only been publicly available for pre-order for about 15 hours... but it's a product that Apple will be selling for the foreseeable future.

Some people are predicting 10 million Apple watches sold in 2015.

I hope you're right, but that sounds weird... If you order a Watch today, you'll get it in June, but if you order it on the 24th, you'll get it the same day ?

no, i just pay attention to the world. apple tends to behave a certain way.

when their behavior changes, it's a good sign that something is up.

you don't need to be a palm reader to figure that out.

I think it could make sense. They were also emphasizing that you are PRE-ORDERING a watch when you buy on line now and that the actual release day is the 24th.

Makes me think they have saved a separate stock for pick up in stores on release day.

The Mac Rumors Apple Watch page seems to back this up as well.

It states:

"Beginning on April 24, the official launch date of the watch, customers will be able to purchase an Apple Watch online or make a reservation for an Apple Watch in store, which will allow them to select a model online and try it on at the store before making the purchase. Apple retail employees will provide Personal Setup to help buyers customize their devices and pair it with an iPhone. Reservations are required to purchase an Apple Watch in store, as Apple will not be allowing walk-in purchases at launch. According to retail chief Angela Ahrendts, this is to prevent people from waiting in line and to improve the Apple Watch buying experience."

I've never stood in line for an iPhone on release day, nor pre-ordered one, but it sounds like this on-line reservation for store pick up is replacing waiting in line day of. Instead, it's an online queue (based on how quickly you order).

Read the next paragraph
"Just ahead of Apple Watch pre-orders, Apple retail chief Angela Ahrendts announced via press release that Apple may not have enough Apple Watches to meet demand, so users who are hoping for an April 24 delivery should pre-order online as early as possible. Leaked Apple Watch shipping information from the German Apple Store app has also suggested that there's a possibility some stainless steel Apple Watch models may not be in stock to ship on April 24 at all, depending on the band. Apple Watch Edition watches also may not ship until May."

Probably would have done because many that couldn't get it delivered on launch day would just wait until later when they are in stock in stores.

Yep, I am one of them. I didn't stay up until 2AM (CST) and the model I wanted said "June" when I checked this morning. I won't be getting one until I see more reviews (mainly - does the third party app lag go away) and until I can buy one in person. They won't get my money until late this summer now.

...not to say that I don't still want one... if the shipping estimates become more favorable.. :D

Yes, but it says April 24th DELIVERY, not store pickup, and should PREORDER online as early as possible (not order on release day for store pickup). Also, some SS models may not be in stock to SHIP ON APRIL 24th.

All of that could apply to the PRE ORDER only.

From what I heard from employees in store today, the are really differentiating between the Pre Order and the Release Day.

24 hours isn't up yet. Wait and see if they announce first day sales a bit later (after checking the numbers to make sure they comply with SEC public disclosure rules), or maybe during the earnings call.

Some of you are ridiculous, claiming to be able to parse the meaning of the word "great".
They sold all they had at launch!! Whether it was a limited supply or not is irrelevant.
No one will know the success of the device for quite some time. No one has succeeded yet with a watch. Apple may or may not. We'll see. It not time for rejoicing by Apple's critics (who seem post here in great numbers).
The iPod was overpriced and met initially with a giant "meh". It became iconic.

Well done Mr Cook. Apple Watch sold out for months before I even got to try it on. I am not impressed you ****ing useless sack of ****.
