limited quantities available would not have affected the number of pre-orders coming in, though.

It did for me, I was ready to pre order a space grey sport until I spotted it said June, then I didn't go through with it.

hmm, "great" isn't quite the adjective i expected to hear from tim cook regarding initial sales
exactly what i thought if the sales are that good Tim would have called it fantastic or something like that

'fantastic' is greater than 'great' ?

i thought they were synonyms

[edit]
nvrmnd.. upon further reading of the thread, i see this has been discussed plenty already :)

one would think if the pre-orders were truly great, they would be shouting it form the rooftops with extreme excitement.

instead apple is taking the diplomatic approach. apple never takes the diplomatic approach.

so many apple experts in this thread..... Man I wish I had access to all the inside info you and others seem to have on apple.

----------

I hope you're right, but that sounds weird... If you order a Watch today, you'll get it in June, but if you order it on the 24th, you'll get it the same day ?

How is it weird? They ALWAYS have store stock to sell.....no matter the product so why should apple watch be any different? I'd be willing to be they do/will and I'll be one of the first to jump on it if it is (true)

The name for the next Apple product:
Extraordinary. Available in Extraordinary C, Extraordinary S and Extraorinary Edition Edition editions.

In Apple speak it is..... one would have expected at least one "Phenomenal" in his remarks:D

yea... but if he uses "phenomenal" this time.... next time he must use "really phenomenal"... and the time after that he must say "really really phenomenal"...
never a lack of something for people to overanalyze!

Which other products has Apple announced would not be available in stores to walk-in customers (until after an unspecified period)?

Apple knew this, it wasn't going to be a instant hit product like iPhone, iPod or iPad, its kind of inbetween something that could be innovative, or another drop into the tepid waters of smart watches that haven't heated up yet.
.

As if everything predicted the iPod, iPhone, and iPad would be "instant hits". Actually, everyone predicted pretty much the same thing you are saying about the watch... or worse..

he must be thinking of all of the $$$ he is making today
(even for products that won't be sent out for a month, or two, or three)

Ya know, making billions of dollars is an inevitable side effect of being CEO of the world's most exciting and innovative consumer technology company, but once you get to a certain saturation point, the novelty of "being rich" drops off VERY sharply. You can only get SO excited and do SO much, personally, with a huge amount of wealth. If he was that way motivated, he'd never be the laser focused, effective CEO that he is.

You don't walk around with a genuine, happy smile like that, driven ENTIRELY from "Oh look how much MORE money I've made today..." - only stupid people with no sense and no life experience, assume, simplistically & ignorantly that more cash means more happiness - that is STUPID. He's GENUINELY happy, this is his FIRST Apple baby, so why shouldn't he be beaming from ear to ear? Wouldn't YOU?

Once you've realised that you're incredibly blessed, as he has been, and that your "personal bucket" is full and not likely to empty, you learn to focus on what to do with the huge overflow, otherwise you'd become greedy and consumed by the infatuation with the wealth alone (mammon) - Tim doesn't appear to be driven BY the money, it's just what's gonna come, obviously.

I pity people with these BASIC life lessons yet to be learnt.

With the exception of Apple nobody has any idea if this product will be a success. Even Apple still only have a a hint. While they have the first days pre-orders in the bag, these will not be indicative of the success of this device.

Almost everyone that's ordered so far has neither tried the device or worn it, we've purchased based on hint's as to what the device is capable off and what it will add to our lives. We won't know if this is the next great product class for Apple for 6+ months. It might explode with success, be a slow burn success or a slow burn trip to the fail bin. Anyone that claims otherwise is full of it and that includes so called professionals that should know better. Actually they do know better, but the modern media world is no longer about news, it thrives on opinion and conjecture.

Just buy the device you like and enjoy it. It it doesn't float you boat, don't buy it and enjoy spending your dollars, pounds, groats or whatever on something else.

I for one don't give a dam what anyone else thinks. I've bought a SS 42mm with black band. I hope I like it. If not, so be it, it's not like I used my rent money for the purchase.

Tim Cook is so genuine, just a really nice guy. Say what you want about Apple and its products, but that man could sell fire to the devil himself.

None.... guess we'll see on the 24th what's going on won't we..... I have a nice shiny quarter that says they'll have stock.

----------

Well done Mr Cook. Apple Watch sold out for months before I even got to try it on. I am not impressed you ****ing useless sack of ****.

Wow... Thought I could be a little douchey with my responses....You got me beat hands down!

----------

Fair point but do you not find it galling to see Cook smiling at his local Apple Store when he can't even manage to produce more than 6 hours supply? It's bad management. He's supposed to be a logistics expert. He couldn't manage a piss up in a brewery IMO. I was really looking forward to today. Now what. No watch till June and no MacBook till who knows when. To say I'm frustrated would be an understatement. Maybe they should go back to releasing products one country at a time as the current system clearly isn't working.

Now with this statement I do somewhat agree. I also agree with launching on a more limited scope like they've done in the past.... one because of course the US would be first on the list and two because of the kind of crap we're all going through now.

Good point. Once you're as wealthy as Tim (or even less), you're driven by success, a job well done and recognition. Money is almost an afterthought. Really, is there anything he can't already buy? If he's happy it's because a product that he had a major influence on has made the first tentative steps towards success. It still might fall flat on its arse, but it's going in the right direction.

could anyone imagine him saying anything less then great? even if they were horrible, which they were... he is gonna say great!

Well what would you say?

Kind of a dumb point.

Just like a wannabe President is going to gush about all the things he wants to do when in office, the reality will often be different.

A CEO is going to talk up his product and show passion for what he does, because that's part of the job.

There was a famous CEO in the UK called Gerald Irving Ratner, who you can easily look up. He ran a chain of stores that sold jewelry and home products that were tacky in reality, yet in high demand.

At a speech in 1991 he stated, "We also do cut-glass sherry decanters complete with six glasses on a silver-plated tray that your butler can serve you drinks on, all for £4.95. People say, "How can you sell this for such a low price?", I say, "because it's total crap.""

This one little joke revealed that the Emperor was in fact not wearing any clothes and the company he once ran lost almost three quarters of a billion dollars in value in the weeks that followed this gaffe.

So yeah, any sensible CEO is not going to talk smack about his company or his product. Not sure why we should be critical of this obvious necessity.

After all would you vote for a presidential candidate who said, "Look guys, I'm going to want to make things better, but in reality Congress or the Senate will block much of what I want to accomplish, and then realistically I'll have to bow and scrape to the corporations and rich jerks who funded my election campaign, so I'll be putting their interests above you ordinary folks. But hey, I'll do it with more swagger than my opponent. Now watch me hold this baby and try and look presidential. Look I'm even wearing an American flag pin, so I must REALLY love America..."

those, who got cancelled orders: probably somebody with the same name like yours ordered already somewhere.

Interesting marketing angle with Tim wearing the steel Watch with a Sport band. I think they'll sell a lot of Sports and steels as long as supply keeps up with demand. The white band is the most eye-catching out of all of them. People will notice your Apple Watch from far away.

Boss of big company visits it's shop where a product sells well and says it says well shocker but then on the flip who gave a toss when any of its competitors released competing product (bar the ones now who have now discounted heavily - must be a nice feeling for those early adopters)

hmm, "great" isn't quite the adjective i expected to hear from tim cook regarding initial sales... especially with all the other adjectives that apple execs use during keynotes to describe their products. sounds like it did well, but not as well as he had hoped.

They already said they won't release sales numbers. They sold out in 6 hours, which sounds pretty good to me.
