I sure hope they spent some serious time working on the wireless router part of that device. I have literally just given up on my Airport Extreme and am ready to pick up a different router to replace it. Judging from the number of people complaining on the Apple forums, I'm not alone.

Buy it?

Hey, I'm really interested in buying Time Capsule but I won't be using it as a router. Can I still use it as a hidden away external hard drive hooked up to printers etc. or will it only work when set up on a wireless network?

response

There were several issues raised which objected to my basic point: Here is the response.
To back up data for the long haul (over a few years) on DVD's is generally absurd since they do not last. Home burnt DVD's have a very limited lifespan. They are not reliable. Tape is a much better option. It does not corrupt as fast. I know I have been there with dvd's and sometimes when i have gone back to use them from about 5 years ago, they have failed me and they are corrupted.
As far as the issue of cost: this was not my point. I was not talking about cost because Dell is selling laptops for $400. I don't want that junk even if it were $200.
The responder: Mr. iherzeleid asked for a comparable item at $500. You can't get a 4 TB drive for that price, but the Time Capsule has been lauded as a back-up for all the Macs in your house. I have 3 kids and 5 Macs and for all the iTunes and iPhoto's and iMovies and FCP movies etc. there is not enough space If you have kids like I do and everyone has a Mac and they all back up their stuff, it is way too small. If you only have 1 or 2 Mac's and don't do lots of photos or movies, which was my point, then it will be great. But the loonger you use it even with just 1 person and one mac, the harddrive will fill up and have to start dumping the oldest data and often it is the oldest data that you want to save.
So I am not saying that I do not want one, but i wish Apple had made it better.
The Time capsule is a great idea, but it needs a larger hard drive or better ports rather than just a USB.
Now do you uderstand where I am coming from?

Given proper storage and handling, DVD recordable media is estimated to have a lifespan of 30 to 100 years according to the Optical Storage Technology Association. Tape is more short-lived with a media lifespan measured in years rather than decades. The successful approach to long term backups requires that the material being protected be successfully read and rewritten to new media periodically, but that discussion is outside the scope of this thread.

The Time Capsule is not intended to meet a need for long term information archival. It exists to provide a convenient way to recover from a catastrophic computer failure. And moving terrabytes over a wireless network is going to be dead slow and a bad idea no matter what device is being discussed.

I'm starting to get concerned about being the early adopter (guinea pig) at this point. Do you think Apple might be rushing TC whenever if finally gets released? Is it over zealous or cause for concern...

They set this dead line and now potentially not making it, hum could be rushing it? what do you think... or just making sure that its perfect?

I am wondering why Apple announced Time Capsule eight weeks before it would ship. I know maybe to build up some demand... but that seems a little but unlike Apple. Usually it seems like they do not announce a product until it is ready to ship (or close).

Why not just buy an external hard drive? It sounds like that is what you really want.

Honestly, I don't know what they could really be rushing with the TC. The TC is pretty much just a AEBS with a hard drive in it and some software that gives it additional features. It's nowhere near as complicated as an iPhone or Leopard, or even the new multi-touch trackpad.

Well, given the problems that the AEBS has had ( just check out the support discussion boards over at apple, or the reviews in the apple store), I don't think we can say "just" an AEBS with a hard drive. They didn't get that right the first time when it was just a router, so maybe they're trying to take care of that problem since a Time Capsule as a backup device would be a complete disaster if it's anywhere near as unreliable as the AEBS has been.

Anyone know the exact date Time Capsule is shipping? Ive got mine ordered, but it just says February...February is almost over, we have 10 days left...

I've been hearing early March. I suggest going to your local Apple store and just asking them when they'll get them in.

Time Capsule Shipment Dated

I ordered Time Capsule along with my new MBP today, and it's showing:

Ships by: Feb 29
Delivered by: Mar 6

I got standard shipping to Massachusetts.

Have you heard of the iPhone?

He has a point though, what is the hold up of this product? This tells me they may be having reliability issues with the backups over the network or something. I'm hoping they can pull it off cause I want one badly.

And Time Capsule is no iPhone.

The iPhone was announced before it was released because they didn't want all the rumor junkies announcing it for them after they submitted the specifications 6 months in advance to the FCC.

Asking why Time Capsule has been delayed since the announcement is a legitimate question.

Heh, "local" for me would be 7 hour drive...so thats not an option...

Shipping early?

I typo'ed on my billing information in January and I got an e-mail an hour ago saying:

Dear Apple Customer,

Thank you for your recent order. We are eager to ship your products,
but we need your help.

We were unable to obtain payment authorization for your order. Please
contact your credit card company to determine the cause for the decline
or simply visit <www.apple.com/orderstatus> and select Edit Payment to
provide us new payment information or to re-authorize your card.

I went in and corrected the billing information after I saw that. Did anyone else get charged tonight (and if so, did they provide any tracking number yet?). I'm thinking if they tried to charge me, they tried to ship it (early). Either that, or they're just processing payments a few days prior to shipping.

Nope, that wont work.

That is two different devices and not one like the Time Capsule
Plus the price you pay for the looks, and the unboxing experience. Also, the 1TB drive you get in the Time Capsule is a "sever grade", whatever it means. We'll know its value when it ships, and it is cranked open.

On my order it says
MB276Z/A TIME CAPSULE 500GB-INT 1 226.00 3-4 Wochen (=weeks)

and
Ships by: 25 Mar, 2008
Delivered by: 02 Apr, 2008

*sigh*
My order status hasn't changed, and still says Feb 29. I placed the order on Feb7. When did you order it?

Nope, my order is still sitting at "Prepared for Shipment" and expected to leave on the 29th Feb.

Add me to the confused list. Why did they announce this product, let people order it and then nothing for weeks and weeks. All very strange.

Mine is prepared for shipment as well.

I have both an iMac and a MacBook. Anyone know if I can use it as a wired hard drive with the iMac and wireless with the MacBook? If not I suppose I'll switch to wireless with the iMac too but it doesn't make much sense to do that since the TC will be sitting right next to it.

I look forward to hearing about impressions of time capsule. Sounds really intriguiging to me. I want to upgrade my router as well so I figure this is a good purchase. I cannot wait until this ships!!
