I tried choosing by ruling options out. Part of that problem with this method is I've waffled on sizing. I've always preferred smaller watches so I thought for sure the 38mm. But then the battery life thing came up and Apple themselves says battery life will be better on the 42... And this is really only a problem since some options are only available in one size.

1. Classic buckle is ruled out because this is coming off and going on every day, must be worn snug to work properly, and I hate pinching myself with buckled watch bands. I've hated buckled bands for a lot longer than smart watches have existed, but, knowing it's coming off every day (yes, I currently sleep with my watch on) makes the thought of that band even worse.
2. The wife nix'd the milanese band. Nuff said.
3. The first pic in the wild of the stainless link bracelet was terrible and made it look really cheap and just... bad. (No stainless link bracelet)
4. I hate the way any kind of rubber pulls my arm hair (no sport band for normal use anyway, can tolerate for a sweat-session if needed)
5. Leather loop looks... bizarre. Sometimes I like. Other times I can't imagine wanting it. Mostly, though, I want to shower with this watch on and probably will, regardless of all the bickering on that topic. So that band is kind of half-way out of running, but if I decided not to shower then the black loop & SS looks pretty good to me, usually. But if I want 38mm, it's not an option. That leaves it at about 25% "OK"
6. Modern buckle, in black, looks fine to me based on all the pics I can find. But it has the same leather vs. water issue as the loop, plus, maybe it really won't look as good on me as I think. I go back and forth. So this is also 25% "OK"
7. Space Black SS. I've worn a fully blacked out watch for the last couple years and, other than not being able to see the dial half the time (lol) it's pretty nice. It's also small, 36mm, and very very thin (Citizen Stiletto) so I figured maybe this was the right choice for me. But it has the same band style as the stainless link bracelet. Does making it nearly black fix the boringness?

Okay, that's where I started a week or two ago... and every single assumption has been second guessed. So, the lesson learned is this: I am indecisive.

I have this final outcome set if only I could make a few decisions. First, if I will shower with it, it has to be a metal band, so at that point I just have to decide color and size. If I won't shower with it, then I have to pick the size or style as a pair which makes that decision even tougher. Do I boldly go where no JayLenochiniMac dares to go and wear the 38mm black modern buckle or do I go against my instinct and wear the 42mm leaving me with only the black leather loop in this case? Such challenging choices that will mean so little in the end ;)

At the moment, I'm leaning towards the 42mm stainless steel w/ link band, because, that's what my 7 year old daughter thinks I should get. As good of a decision as any, I guess. I could see it going to space black again, or even 42mm ss w/ black loop.

All I know for sure is (for daily use) the sport band, milanese, and classic buckle are out. I guess that's progress. I'm also pretty sure I'll go with 42mm for even 1% extra battery life. So that leaves the decision about whether it really matters to me to shower with it on (yes, I have considered the risk) and if not, then that leather loop might be pretty unique and comfortable if weird looking.

Otherwise it comes down to which color of link bracelet SS to go with.

Getting there!

Five days till pre-order.

I've changed my mind on my "absolutely final decision" a number of times, but the time is fast approaching when I'm going to have to commit.

I think I've narrowed it down to 42mm SS with classic buckle or 42mm SS with Milanese loop.

Anyone got any arguments to push me one way or the other?

I've ruled out:

Sports strap –– cheap looking on an expensive watch, rubber maybe sweaty, bit ugly round the back
Link -- way out of my budget
Modern buckle -- probably too feminine and only available with 38mm which is probably too small
Leather loop -- can't decide which size would be right for me (my wrist is 178mm) worried about how much overlap there'll be
Sports watch -- no strap flexibility, no sapphire screen

I really enjoyed reading how you narrowed down your decisions. I wish everyone would do that haha. I really agree with everything you listed above. I think you should lean towards the classic buckle for now and buy the mlisense loop later when you are Absolutley sure on how strong the magnets are. I will be getting 42mm Apple Watch SS with White band. (Sport band because I play basketball so yea lol)

----------

Your really think the sports and sports band will look. 'Cheap'?

It's been a concern of mine..

Nah I doubt it will look cheap. Even Tim Cook wears a white sport lol

----------

i think the "oh no! I ordered the milanese loop and now i really wish i'd ordered the classic buckle" thread will be much more exciting :)

Haha, luckily I don't have to think about that yet.

When the dust has settled and Watch has arrived to my nearest Apple Store, I'll walk in and try them on my wrist and make my decision based on that.

Space Gray 42mm Sport, should go with almost everything I wear. If I had the money I'd get the Space Black SS 42mm but, then again if I was itching to spend $1100 on something I'd rather buy a 1TB SSD for my Mac Pro and more RAM.

If I were rich, I'd get the Editon yellow gold with Midnight blue Classic buckle in 42mm. Only $15,000.

Black with black sport 42mm for me. If I really like it I will go big on the next iteration. If it ends up in a drawer sometime over the next year I'm only out $400

Do you have hairy arms? The milanese loop might catch a few threads? :D

I'm not sure that we will be able to pre-order online has been announced.

Regardless, I'll be pre-ordering a 42mm Sport white model. I figured I'll want to have a sport band anyway, then I'll build my band collection from there.

For me it will be the SS with the black sports black strap. At £519 it doesn't come cheap for essentially something more than likely i'll be updating when the next version comes out.

For straps, i'd wait and see what third parties will offer once the watch is out and doing the rounds. From experience with a Pebble watch i'll be using this all the time especially when working out at the gym so the sports band is the way to go for me.

I started off going for the Sports variant as "it is gen 1 and so I'm not going to invest lots just yet, but then realised/decided that as this is going to be worn on my wrist everyday I really need to enjoy wearing it, so I moved on to the SS variant.

Preference is leather loop but I don't think I'll enjoy the 42mm size (wrists are 175mm and I don't like big watches) which leaves me with 38mm and a choice of either classic or modern buckle. I prefer the modern buckle as classic just seems really boring compared to such an innovative device, so leaning towards modern, even though it is the 'feminine' option (I'm 32 yr old male). My wife doesn't think it is feminine at all and said "only the people on your forums will notice if it's feminine"!!

In terms of Friday, I'm torn between pre-ordering a few on the credit card and then deciding in-store, vs committing to one pre-order and if I change my mind in-store, risking the stock delays - it just feels weird and greedy to pre-order multiple watches. If I did, it would be the 42mm with leather loop, and the 38mm with classic and/or modern buckles. Ideally I'll find the 42mm is ok and go with that, but that's unlikely and so I'll have to decide between 38mm with modern or classic buckle.

So my final decision!

I'm going to purchase the 38mm SS model with white sport band but also purchase the Milanese loop separately as soon as its on sale.

Very excited!!!!

Any particular reason why? Just curious...

I believe her words were "eww, no, that looks so gross" and when pressed for a more meaningful explanation, she had nothing, and just cited it was her opinion and she hates it.

I don't know what else to say :) I've actually never liked milanese loop style bands myself, but, considered this one because of the interesting magnetic clasp design, so I'm hardly concerned about its banned status for my decision making process.

I'm fairly sure I'm getting the Sport silver with white sport band and then purchasing a blue leather loop separately. However I'm stuck on the sizes. Anyone guys here with really thin wrists getting the 42mm?

Well I'm finally home after Easter and have spent the last 30 minutes wearing cut-outs of each size mounted on 1cm of cardboard, and having been convinced 38mm was right for me (my wrists are 174mm), I started to really like the 42mm and my wife said the 38mm was definitely too small for me:

So 42mm SS it is.

Now just need to decide on black leather loop (my preference) or classic buckle.

Going by this photo, I'm worried the leather loop may not be that nice in terms of its 'blackness' (but of course could just be lighting):

A for effort with the cutout. In the long run I think you will appreciate the extra screen real estate of the 42mm.

4. I hate the way any kind of rubber pulls my arm hair (no sport band for normal use anyway, can tolerate for a sweat-session if needed)

I have VERY hairy arms and have been wearing the rubber Pebble band for a year and have no trouble with it pulling on my arm hair. Rubber can have very different textures and I CAN see that some could pull it. Doubt the Apple one will. (Is it rubber or plastic?)

Arm hair IS an issue with the link bracelets. They will pinch it and keep it. The Rolex link AND my Seiko regularly needed tweezers to pull out my arm hair they took.

BUT saying that. I am getting the SS Link anyway.

I've worn a link bracelet for 15 years and never had hair pulling issues. Funny how different each person's experience can be with things like this.

The sport band is synthetic rubber. That's what "Fluoroelastomer" is and why Apple bothers to say that term. Real rubber can cause allergies that Fluoroelastomer can not.

I do wear a wrist HR monitor when cycling which has a rubber band and it pulls my hair from time to time and it's annoying.

It honestly doesn't matter if the sport band pulls my hair or not. It's still basically the same type of "clasp" as the classic buckle, which I dislike as a life-long watch wearer. I dislike the whole dance of finding and trying to remember the ideal slot to size into, and then tucking the band which always falls out (though tucking under the band against the skin will probably help that, it will also probably pull hair tightly each time) then taking it off which necessarily forces you to pull the strap EVEN TIGHTER than you'd wear it. I just find that whole thing unpleasant and since there are other options, I wouldn't even consider this for my normal band.

Oh and one other issue with these types of buckled bands, when they are removed, they completely separate, which significantly increases the chances of just dropping the watch. Dropping the SS case is going to be something you want to avoid with a sapphire crystal. Sapphire is prone to shattering. The loop bands are designed to make it difficult for the band to completely open up, and the link bracelet, of course, is often sold with this aspect as a primary feature (safety clasp or whatever.) The modern buckle still has the separation problem.

Remembering this last detail makes me even less interested in any bands besides milanese, leather loop, and link bracelet. Which, with my other considerations, leaves only the link bracelet. Just need to finalize my size decision. Probably 42mm. If I ever felt like wearing a non-link bracelet, it would probably be the leather loop.

So, that's pretty awesome, narrowed my choice down to one of color. Space Black vs. plain stainless link bracelet. May just end up flipping a coin on this one :)

I'm pretty sure that's the brown loop. The photos from these events are 99% awful. The most common flaw is they are underexposed. But add to that the lighting which was also terrible, and very very narrow in spectrum terms, and you get a really nasty color outcome. Brown will be extra dark in this case, because the lights are very cold white which basically means they lean blue and brown is basically dark orange which is the opposite of blue.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up with the black sport.

I like how subtle the black looks - and whilst the SS is nice - I think it's going to be an absolute fingerprint magnet.

LOL! Buy it. You can always return it for another style if you find you don't like it. I'm tempted to buy two of them to make up my mind and returning the 2nd.

Can't decide which size is better. I have skinny wrist so the 38mm doesn't look too small on me imho.

38mm.

My husband doesn't even have skinny wrists and he's going 38mm. Reason being, the watch he wears now is the same height as the 38mm and he's fine with it being thinner, but doesn't want a taller watch, so he nixed the 42mm.

Unless he goes sport band, and he said he'd do 42mm for that. Right now, he's thinking 38mm with link.

Silver, not black.

I think you could go either way. Problem with those cutouts is that they don't take the thickness of the watch into consideration, so it'll be standing out from the wrist and it'll make the watch look larger to the eye.

The 42mm paper cutout looks fine on my wrist and I'm a small female with 155mm wrists. It looks fine on my daughter's wrist and she's a 14yo tiny thing with 145mm wrists.

But, if it were as thick as the actual watch, I think the 42mm would look quite large on my daughter and I.

If you're going for a "sporty" look, go for the 42mm. If you wanted more of a "professional" look, go for the 38mm.

I think either would work on your wrists, given the pics you posted.
