Because:

*the DSL modems DSL providers send out these days already have a wireless base station built in.

*I have a hand held device with built-in wireless adapter

*guests with laptops appreciate the wireless connection

*this is a huge house and it doesn't make sense at all to string wires all over the freaking place if everything is already in place for a wireless connection

*full 100MB duplex is limited to certain lengths of wire. Signal also degrades where you can't string them properly, i.e. sometimes you're forced to run them parallel to powerlines.

Did I forget anything?

Mice nibble at the wires.

Seriously, what about a class action lawsuit against Apple because of missing - formerly advertised - functions in the final product?

I'm surprised people haven't insisted that apple take them back and refund their money since it doesn't do what it was advertised to do. Has anyone tried that?

May be a moot point, someone reported that this may enable that feature.

So i just applied the updates (including a firmware update to the AEBS) and these are the number changes i came across

Bizarre that the new version changes the copyright date to 2007. How did that slip through?

@ Toe: I am talking about the EXTREME base station.

This is so weird. I still have a wireless connection, but my base station has completely disappeared from Airport Utility.

Interesting, as your build number increased from 9C31 to 9C7010, the copyright year regressed from 2008 to 2007.

I guess TimeMachine really IS working :p

No noticeable changes so far (did all the software and firmware updates)
but the only real issue I've been having is that my AEBS will stop letting people authenticate to use the attached hard drive (500GB Maxtor).
If I want to keep it accessible I have to restart the AEBS at-least once a day. I'm really hoping this is fixed ! I'm sure I'll be able to tell if it is fixed within a couple hours.

Yes I can Now Use Time Machine With the Extreme

Nice! Congrats to all those people that were waiting for this. Also, as a note, I did a quick and dirty speed test prior to and after the update. Prior to the update (using speedtest.net), I was averaging about 11,000kbps down and 845kbps up. After the update, I'm getting about 13,000kbps down and 3,300kbps up. Not too shabby.

speed test

installed the updates. just wanted to see if there was a transfer speed increase. totally unscientific test showed 2.55MB/sec.

anyone else have a speed test with new firmware?

Time Machine on AEBS working for me

I'm currently backing up (no hacks, just updates) on my AEBS.

What I did...

-Install updates, including firmware for AEBS
-Go into Airport Utility, click on Disks, then File Sharing.
-Check to enable. Select "With AirPort Extreme Password"
-In Finder, select the AEBS. Double-click it to mount the volume.
-Once inside the AEBS, double click the USB drive to mount that.
-Go into TM prefs in System Preferences.
-Turn TM off.
-Click change disk.
-Select the USB drive.
-It asked for "my" username and password to share the drive for TM. Turns out, that's the name of the AEBS with its admin password.
-Turn TM back on.
-In menu bar, click the TM icon, and "Backup Now..."

Working very nicely so far. Not as fast as a direct connection, but chugging along.

Oops. It's trying to back up my entire computer. I'll have to see about that now... Doesn't seem to be reusing the old backup. Huh.

I think I might have it continue this backup via USB direct connection, then delete the old one once it's rejigged itself. That worked when sharing the USB drive from the macbook to the imac.

Good luck.

I'll also confirm that I can now backup to a USB drive using the Airport Extreme Base Station after installing firmware 7.3.1 and the Airport Update.

nope

I spoke too soon. It just dropped off again and now isn't registering with Utility. I'm in the same room as the Express with only a tv stand between it and my MBP.

AND, this is the new 'n' version I bought yesterday

The Express is visible in iTunes, the green light is on but I get a timeout message when I try to connect.

Time Machine with Airdisk

Time Machine is recognizing my airdisk fine and is doing an initial backup :D (I've never tried it until now- before, the disk wouldn't show up as an option to select in the Time Machine system pane correct?)

I believe you need both the software update for OS X and the 7.3.1 firmware update for your AEBS (appeared automatically when i launched airport utility)... And like a previous poster i mounted the disk first with the finder before going to the time machine setup.

No, i think it just ignores any username you put in there and verifies the password...

Awesome ! did you do anything special ?
I can't get it to show up in my time machine settings

I just mounted the drive as an Airdisk, put in the password to do that, waited a minute and Time Machine found it and just started doing its thing.

Did you guys already have time machine set up prior?

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I guess time machine doesn't like my Extreme-Lacie combo....

Ready, set, explain! People (not including myself as I don't have an AEBS) are drooling for this feature. Is it officially working? Can you post screenshots if it is?

It's backing up at the moment. Here are some screenshots for proof. Sorry for the small size.

I did have it setup prior, yes. I have that same setup (Extreme-Lacie). As seen in my screenshot above though, that same drive shows up twice, one being supposedly Unformatted.

cool, I wonder if it's not working for me because I have my Airdisk setup to authenticate with accounts rather than a disk password or airport password.

I really like having separate accounts.
