I just called again. This rep said it's possible, but he also didn't seem to understand what I was asking so it's sort of a crapshoot at this point. I'm not sure I want to call again.

I wouldn't trust AT&T to make this work correctly. I would just put the money in savings until you want to pay off the phone or buy another one or use towards the monthly payment.

Last year I bought thru Apple with Next 18 then changed it to Next12. I did go into Apple Store and they could handle it with AT&T as a return and repurchase but I kept same phone ( they said another carrier change requires returning the physical phone).

Note that the down payment option lets you upgrade at 12 mos and your net payment is exactly the same as next 12 for 12 months. Just FYI.

It's sort of ridiculous how I can't get a clear answer from a company that I pay $120-150 per month to. Only reason I want to do this is to not add another $47.50 to that bill. The down payment option cuts that in half.

Just spoke to John. He assured me that it's possible to add the down payment later. He also said he made a note on my account. Wonder if I can trust this guy.

I emailed the transcript to myself, with a reference number, so I wonder if this is enough to get them to do it afterwards anyway. I reiterated what I want to do towards the end to avoid any confusion.

EDIT: Apologies for sort of derailing the thread.
AT&T : Hello! My name is John-B. How may I help you today?

Me : Hi John.

Me : I will be upgrading to a Next plan with the new iPhone. I understand you offer Next + Down Payment but only directly through AT&T. Will I be able to order with Next via Apple, then change my plan to Next + Down Payment with AT&T immediately after?

AT&T : That is a good question allow me to check that one for you, rest assured that I will be here to assist you with all the information that you will be needing before pre ordering the device

Me : Thank you.

AT&T : You are so welcome!

Me : I have spoken to a couple of representatives over the phone but they were unsure.

AT&T : I see, as I have checked here yes you will be able to pre order via apple :) What I will just need to do is to have my notation on your account then rest assured that you will be able to preorder for the new Iphone device

AT&T : Then after that, all you need to do is to contact att to make sure that your rate plan will be changed as well

Me : So I can preorder via Apple on a Next plan. Then I can call AT&T to arrange the down payment and reduce monthly device costs?

AT&T : That is correct, rest assured that I will be posting a note on your account for documentation purposes of what we have discussed / Processed today.

Me : Thank you very much, I really appreciate it.

AT&T : You are so welcome!

AT&T : Now that we are able to check if you will be able to do the pre order via apple as well as have all the information that they will be needing noted on your account, would there be anything else that I can do to make your experience even better?

Me : That's everything, thank you.

AT&T : You are so welcome!

AT&T : Perfect!

AT&T : Awesome!

AT&T : Thanks for choosing AT&T! We really appreciate your continued business and I am glad we got you taken care of today! and you do have a great day! :D (shake)

Me : You too!

For those of you who have used att's site or app before for pre ordering, is the app easier or should I be on the website?

Quick question I thought I could ask here rather than starting a new thread. If you order through AT&T for an iPhone 6S, you do still have the option to do a 2 year agreement, correct? (and therefor pay $199/$299/etc. for the phone?) I have an old plan with unlimited data and I want to stick with doing 2 year agreements.

I may try to use the AT&T app to upgrade.

You are a brave man. I salute you!

All kidding aside, I've pre-ordered all my phones via the ATT website and always received my phones on launch day. I never do the midnight slam time. Their site can get sketchy though.

Yes, that will be possible via AT&T.

On the app do you start with your upgrade eligibility then choose the phone? I'm not seeing another way to do it.

You may want to double check. When I asked the ATT rep, they said that you can only buy it outright, or use the Next plan for iPhones now.

I'm on hold right now trying to get my upgrade eligibility moved up. Currently not available until October 3rd which annoyingly is just a week after the phones come out.

Anyone having luck doing this?

Does AT&T's site update when a certain model is backordered, or do they let orders go through and notify people later about the backorder? That's what I'm mainly concerned about. I don't want to get an order in and be told later on that it won't arrive on release day.

Keep us updated, ATT has my wife's upgrade available on 10/5 and I'm hoping to get it moved up.

Which one is the better option: pay $399 and sign another two year contract or pick the ATT NEXT and pay installments on the phone?

Old info but new for you.

Your bill will go up $25 per month if you take the subsidy.. $199 phone... You will pay a total of $40 per month for the phone on the service. Plus $40 activation fee and of course the $199 plus tax.

If you get NEXT you will keep the $25 discount making this line $15 per month but you will need to pay the NEXT charge for your phone monthly plus $15 activation fee and sales tax on the MSRP of the phone.

Your bill will go up if you buy a new phone. No way around that.

(using $649 phone)

Contract:

$25 per month plus $40 fee plus $211 initial price with 6% tax = $851 for a $649 phone (if you don't have unlimited don't do it)

or Next

$21-32.50 per month depending on plan months plus $15 fee plus $38.94 sales tax

Or Apple

Keep in mind the Apple plan will require you to go in store to pick-up the phone. Apple plan includes Apple Care but that can be purchased for NEXT too.

Comparison from 9to5

Same boat here. Interested to know. I'm stopping by ATT today to get clarification.
Read my post above. If you are on a Family share plan receiving the $25 per month discount with a contract/out of contract phone... your bill will go up unless you buy the phone outright.

So this is a little messed up, but I did both the chat and the phone to see about moving my eligibility up from the 3rd of October. On the phone, they said they could do it for me but it would take 3 to 5 business days, which doesn't help me at all for pre-orders tomorrow. HOWEVER, on the chat, they said that I could get back on the chat at 6 am EST time (since thats when the chat department starts) and they would be able to allow me to upgrade only. Said it couldn't be done any other way.

I don't know that I buy that, but thats my plan
