People are really getting annoyed with the names of an OS? Why? It doesn't actually have any effect on the usage of it. If someone asks what OS I run on my computer I tell them I run either OS X, Mac OS, Mac OS X, OS 10.x or Mac OS 10.x (at the minute, 10.8) and I will continue to do so when 10.9 comes out. Very few people will call it Mac OS 10.9 Mavericks when it is actually released.

It's a name, It doesn't matter. Microsoft have had some stupid names and Android still has stupid names (I'm an Android user, not hating on it)

Just enjoy the new features and forget what it's called, people :p

:apple:

Obviously you have no idea how this whole thing works!

EVERYTHING matters. Apparently, for some of the folks here, the name of the OS is terrifically important.

Never mind how it works.

Never mind if it meets your computing needs.

Never mind that it gives you enjoyment.

The name is...well, a life and death issue. (for the hyperbole impaired...that was hyperbole)

So, please try to understand what really matters...viz. trivial nonsense.

;) :D

Like every other product name in Apple's history people will eventually get used to it whether they like it or not. And soon it'll become second nature. And if it really grinds your gears then you have only 11months left to deal...

That's not true for everyone. Me and my friends, we say I am using mountain lion. or snow leopard. We don't call it os ten point seven, or ten point eight.

It's weird for me to say I am using os Mavericks. It's odd for me, of course.

Calling it "Sea Lion" is much better than calling OS ten point nine.

Can we just collectively decide to call it Sea Lion?

I think we should all just collectively decide to call it Sea Lion. Everyone will soon know what you mean if they don't already, and Sea Lion is a great name and miles better than Mavericks (and yes, I did already know what Mavericks is). Lots of Apple products have semi-official nicknames or officially adopted their codenames (eg, the cat names themselves), so we wouldn't be violating the spirit of Apple or anything.

Failing that, those of us who dislike it could just take to calling it Sea Lion on our own, and the Mavericks fans would know what we mean, and soon it would be known by both names (as well as the official 10.9), which would also be an improvement.

Remember, language is descriptive. If enough of us use a word to mean X, that word means X. 10.9 Sea Lion!

The first thing I thought of when I heard Mavericks was John McCain. They kept calling him a "Maverick" in the 2008 elections.

And none of them, including my alma mater, have anything to do with California, except that I'm in it.

Apple could've at least spelled it w an X: MaveriX

Misspelling names like that on purpose is so.. script kiddie, and so late 1990s/early 2000s.. Like Staind, Trapt, and Limp Bizkit. Not really professional at all.

Better yet, "Lucy Lawless" has only been used ONCE. The name could do with a little more traffic.
OS X - Lawless has a good ring to it.

What the hell does Xena have to do with this? In any event, She's Kiwi.

Yet again, What happened to Ocelot? Doesn't Apple like Ocelots?

I'll give you that one. Ocelot, Sea Lion, Meerkat. Perhaps they should have had a look through O'Reilly's catalog of books to see if there was a cat that they missed. But now, they have a plethora of names they can use.

The name is Mavericks.

I imagine, Mr. Retrofire, that like most of us, and most things, you go by a number of names. I merely propose that those who dislike the name (the majority of users it seems) collectively refer to it as Sea Lion. No harm done if everyone knows what is meant.

After skimming this thread, I seem to be one of the few that first thought they were starting a list of names of horses, or maybe Ford Motor Cars from the '70's. Either way the next one could have been OSX Mustang.

I never thought about surfing.

I don't hate the name, but I think they could have done better.

I think it would be amusing if they jumped to a flower theme, and came up with OS X Püssy Willow.

Some people would absolutely lose their minds!

For anyone that missed the explanation given, it's about two minutes long, and starts at minute 17 of the WWDC keynote.

Our latest release, Mountain Lion, is the ninth of our "Big Cat" named releases in just over a decade.

As we turn our attention now toward the tenth, we've hit a real issue.

We do not want to be the first software in history to be delayed due to a dwindling supply of cats.

Now fortunately, we do have a creative group at Apple, and we can think out of the box, and we thought "Maybe we can take this lion thing in a different direction", so I'm proud to present to you OS X Sea Lion. What do you think?

OK, maybe not, that can be a bit of a dead end.

In fact, we're really excited about the future of the Mac, and we want a set of names that will carry us for at least the next ten years. And you know, the answer was really obvious to us. It's those places that inspire us here, in California. In the place where OS X is designed and built.

So for our first California-themed release, we went just outside our back yard, just off the coast, to a place with some of the biggest waves and extreme surfing in all of North America.

OS X Mavericks

Without hearing the explanation, as soon as I read it will be named "Mavericks" I instantly knew it was the surf spot. Then again I am a surfer (from New Jersey).

One might similarly ask what connection Maverick has with operating systems? It's an Odd choice. What's next, Redondo Beach? Or more localized California landmarks such as Alum Rock, or the Orange Circle?
Rather than surfer paradise, I suspect whatever marketing committee came up with this was thinking the name'd make us all feel all cool like that character in the old flyboy movie, Top Gun.
Still, I guess Surfer Dan was a way cool song, so if Apple wants us to put on our baggy shorts and flip flops, I can deal.

Mavericks is a surfing spot in Half Moon Bay, CA that produces some of the biggest waves on the PLANET. A place somewhere close to Cupertino and probably the most famous surf spot in California.

There is nothing more epic that's California themed than Mavericks.

If you have a better idea, let's hear it.

I already provided a list for starters. But here again:

Sequoia
Redwood
Weed (seriously)
Bermuda
Zzyzx
Plumas
Shasta
Sutter
Muir
Chesley
Sully (Sullenberger. yes, the pilot from AWE1549. He's from Danville; bay area).
Eureka
Yreka
Bodega
Salton
Roselle

And those are just for starters, with only 4 of those being people, one after a guide dog, and the rest locations. I'm pretty sure more could be found in 2 episodes of California Gold with Huell Howser.

You would be wrong, especially with the waves that have come in lately, plus it being a major attraction for the area.

They should have just stuck with wildcats. It's not like they were out of them:

Margay
Lynx
Bobcat
Ocelot

That would have gotten us at least four more years!

I suspect our new operating system was actually named after Mel Gibson and James Garner.

That's the first thing that crossed my mind when I realized they were serious about this foolish name. Seems they will do anything to distance themselves from Steve.

I don't get why 'knowing' precisely what the name is from is supposed to do for someone or make it more appealing.

I liked Sea-lion what great name from there they could have gone with Tigershark - Octopus - catfish etc

I've upgraded to Mavericks as my main OS for my 2011 MBA and 2012 iMac without making a time machine backup of Mountain Lion!

The only minor quirk I see is that when I close Messages with CMD + W or the little "x" it loses the little glowing thin rectangle on the bottom, indicating that I've totally quit the program. It is actually running though, even though the little glowing thin line isn't there.
