Let me guess.. after bears, for the next release you'd see a picture of Dorothy holding both sides of her jaw with her hands, shouting "Oh My!" :p

Anywho, with going the way they are now, they are potentially set up for the next 20 years or more, not just the next 10. They have so many ways they can take this naming convention that it's unpredictable.

I think we should all just collectively decide to call it Sea Lion. Everyone will soon know what you mean if they don't already, and Sea Lion is a great name and miles better than Mavericks (and yes, I did already know what Mavericks is). Lots of Apple products have semi-official nicknames or officially adopted their codenames (eg, the cat names themselves), so we wouldn't be violating the spirit of Apple or anything.

Failing that, those of us who dislike it could just take to calling it Sea Lion on our own, and the Mavericks fans would know what we mean, and soon it would be known by both names (as well as the official 10.9), which would also be an improvement.

Remember, language is descriptive. If enough of us use a word to mean X, that word means X. 10.9 Sea Lion!

I agreed with this, until I realised Sea Lion is not the real name.

Because of Mavericks, the hidden name is Mac OS X Tomcat.

Funny

Funny, I tweeted out during the WWDC stream, that when I saw the wave, I figured they were going to call it SEA LION. Good to see I wasn't alone!

I'm okay with Mavericks though. Next one, 10.10 will be called YOSEMITE!

ZZYZX sounds cooler. ;)

I think it's a great name! Even if they didn't explain what it was all about, I still would like it. Kinda reminds me of Tom Cruise's character in Top Gun!

What's in a name anyway? It's what the OS is capable of that matters!

There you go. We're set for years to come:
OS X Goose
OS X Ice Man
OS X Danger Zone
OS X Viper
OS X Need For Speed
OS X Negative, Ghost Rider; The Pattern Is Full
and so on :p

I agree I wish it followed a naming scheme that was uniform and didn't just change.. I mean Mavericks is fine but it should have been OS11 and then followed up with names of more famous locations for each OS11 update.

Android naming scheme is awesome! That being said I'm an android fan at heart but only because of the google sync :p

I think the name sucks. I'll leave it at that
Totally agree with you!
If you need to search and find out what Mavericks means ( i had guessed they did not mean a lose canon )then I think it's a loser.
From the UK and it means sod all, even having found out what they meant I still think its daft and for many other nationalities its probably even less understood and may even be difficult to pronounce.
With many alternatives I'm left slightly bewildered. As for the "ash tray" Pro I'm even more bewildered, it may be a superb computer but I think it's ill conceived unless they make peripherals in a matching style.

In fact, we're really excited about the future of the Mac, and we want a set of names that will carry us for at least the next ten years. And you know, the answer was really obvious to us. It's those places that inspire us here, in California. In the place where OS X is designed and built.

About as inspirational as a soggy cigarette butt

Probably just a coincidence but I found this observation on Reddit:

fP6Thev.jpg

OS X's big cats aren't Steve's anymore, they are now mavericks.

Only on macrumors would there be a 7 page thread of people whining about a name that has no effect on their life or the software they'll be using.

Its not a unique name, and it does not lend itself to branding. The more I think about it, the more I think apple messed up on this.

Neither was Cougar, Tiger, Leopard, Lion, etc.

One might similarly ask what connection Maverick has with operating systems? It's an Odd choice.

See above. What connection do cats have with a computer operating system?

The cat names have been played out. It was time to move on to something else, and naming the next few releases after places in Cali is a good idea.

I think the issue is the plurality of the name which changes it from a common noun to a confusing geographical location that is not immediately identifiable. Most would be entirely happy with just plain old "Maverick".

To me, a reference to a local surfing beach is just too exclusive.

Being the USA they could have used Gun manufacturers, OSX Magnum, Springfield, Winchester etc would probably go down a storm with the pro lobby but not with the Anti lot.
How about some heritage and use lost indian tribes, for example, OSX Sioux, which if only heard and not read could be taken as Sue a girls name or the ongoing legal battle with Samsung.
Apparently there is some great surf at MaverickS if that was the inspiration would OSX Wave or OSX~ for short not have been better, one could think big water or a nice and friendly wave, hello or if the computer was not playing ball you could wave, goodbye.
I do not believe the "i dont care about the name" people, names are very important, yes blame your mother and father, but please i would like a name that pops up here and there that makes me feel good about owning a Mac not think oh cripes there is that bl**dy silly name again and be rapidly uninspired.

Yes, the 's' is really annoying when all you see is Tom Cruise, and eventually James Garner.

Also, there's no transition in scheme, in contrast to Sea Lion. And the image is just some anonymous wave.

Meh, I don't think it matters. The spot is called "Mavericks". "Maverick" was a Tom Cruise character before he became a complete wackjob.

Does it really matter where the name comes from? Once the thing is out and everyone's using it, nobody's going to care where the name came from. Hell, I can't even remember the last time I used the name "Mountain Lion" before making this post.

People should worry more about the actual features and improvements being included than what the thing is being called. ;)

Obviously you did not read the thread title...

ALSO

IF YOU READ TITLE, AND YOU STILL WANT TO COMMENT WHAT PEOPLE SAY HERE, YOU ARE TRYING TO EDUCATE AND CHANGE PEOPLE'S MIND WHICH IS UNNECESSARY. BECAUSE, FOR WHAT?? DID YOU NAME IT MAVERICKS??

PEOPLE ARE SAYING WHY THEY DON'T LIKE IT, AND WHAT COULD BE A BETTER NAME. BUT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT SOMETHING IRRELEVANT....

YEAH, I DON'T CARE HOW GOOD THE OS CAN BE. I AM TALKING ABOUT THE NAME. THIS IS THE POINT, MAN...

Sorry, I thought this was a discussion board.

Caps lock doesn't make your point sound any better either.

Ha yeah I thought the same exact thing until I realized it was the California State flag.
I'm from California so I thought it was going to be cool to name it after bears. But then the problem is that while the Grizzly is the largest bear it's also extinct :| not quite what they'd want to project. I was hoping for Black Bear or something though.

Then does "Mavericks" refer to McCain and Palin?

I thought the same when he announced it. It also made me think of Top Gun.

Really, 10.9 is not radical enough to be called Mavericks. It's a Snow Leopard style update with mostly under-the-hood changes (App Nap, energy saving technologies, multi-monitor features, etc). I think I would have saved Mavericks for something a little more disruptive.

If you watch the video back, it appears most of the developers in the audience were fine with Sea Lion and didn't realize it was a joke.

It's a sh*te name that means nothing to 99,999% of the people that will use the OS.

I thought Sea Lion was way better, or going with the planets would have been nice, except once they got past Saturn it may have got messy...
