5.5" seems a little too much...

Idk why it matters...

5.5 is way too big for me, I have small hands and do a lot of one-handed work when I'm on transit. I am looking forward to the 4.7 though. :)

For all the people who see larger screen phones out there and think, "yuck, thats just way too big!"

or

"3.5/4 is good enough for me and my hands."

Why not just give it a try one time?

Give it a whirl one year and see what happens...

I don't mean like a time you tried your friends device and it felt weird; I mean like actually OWNING one for a sustained period of time.

You can always return it and get the 4.7, but give yourself a chance to get acclimated with it, even if you thought you would be bothered by this or that. Have an open approach to it and you may find some benefits that you love!

Or you might change the way you use it and what you use it for and when. What about those little cases too--that make it like a small mini iPad or planner. You know, its OK that your hands are small because your hands don't have to "swallow" the whole phone; you can just hold it and use it in various sizes and positions.

What about just finally watching a few Youtube videos or Netflix episodes and enjoying the graphics or eye candy. Maybe download some nice new games even though you don't play them much, just to see the new screen and the new OS in its biggest, boldest form yet.

I know I for one am excited!! You never know for sure until you try one!

Give it a chance!!! :)

I'm personally not interested in going through the experiment with a $600 phone. I'd rather take the one I'm far more likely to enjoy. The same goes for many, I'd expect.

Why though?

How can you be so sure?

You've never had one before. A large iPhone hasn't even existed yet--how can you possibly know with such certainty you wouldn't fall in love with it and the gorgeous eye candy it will no doubt present us with?

Don't you feel the least bit curious of what it would be like to own one??
I have an iPhone 5s as my primary phone and an LG G3 as my secondary device. My iPhone is perfect for carrying in my pocket for calls and txt messages and other on the fly tasks.

The G3 is my answer to the absence of a 5.5" iPod Touch and no desire to carry an iPad around with me.

5.5" is a nice size but not for a phone. I've tried putting my G3 in my pocket and it doesn't work. The only time I'd make a call on a 5.5" device is with a BT ear piece or headphones. I prefer not to carry either of these around with me.

Those are my first hand experiences and opinions with a 5.5" device.

Sometimes needs change or evolve, such as with the way we use our devices, and for what.

Mr. Electronics Evangelist,

Smart people buy smartphones that suit their needs. They do not manufacture needs to justify acquiring such things. If someone has a phone currently that they carry with them every day there is a pretty good chance they will know how they feel about its various properties and look for something different if their needs are not being met.

I'm using a Galaxy s5 now. It's as big as I can go. I don't think I could go back to 4, but I could handle 4.7.

Not really, it doesn't look so bad if you look at it from the back...

Image

To me they both generally look equally "grab-able."

Just because two different sizes look equally "grab-able" from the back, there is only so much you can grab at once. Sometimes when its too big from behind it just looks a little sloppy. ;)

My brother has one of those big phones. He thought he was going to like it, but after a few weeks use it was just too big to cRry around easily.

For me personally, The big one is too big to use as a phone, and too small to use as a tablet.

Like famously, people in this mindset focus so hard on "one handed use" (and I don't even understand what that really means even) and they completely forget... duh... you're losing out on screen real-estate if you refuse a size increase.

What do you do on your phone to make the screen size more important than whether it fits in your pocket?

The key term is "carry around easily"

How about we put this on a visual relative scale to illustrate the point.

So on a relative scale of how easy or difficult it is to carry something around we are here:

Easily <-----
Moderately Easily
Intermediate
Moderately Hard
Hard

And now with the 5.5 we move to here:

Easily
Moderately Easily <-----
Intermediate
Moderately Hard
Hard

But at the same time, on the screen real estate scale, we started off here:

Tons of screen real estate to do cool stuff with
Pretty good amount of size
Decent amount of size
Pretty small screen but usable <-----
I can't even look at this screen its so small

And now with the 5.5 we are here:

Tons of screen real estate to do cool stuff with <-----
Pretty good amount of size
Decent amount of size
Pretty small screen but usable
I can't even look at this screen its so small

So as you can see from the scales, yes we have some change in behavior going on in the way we cary these things and how they feel, but since we really love using the devices, the big screen is so much more appealing and its ok to suffer some minor inconveniences, if you see them as such. Personally I don't see myself being bothered by it or would have any difficulty adapting, but even if in theory I did, I would be so excited about the new ocular experience that I wouldn't care and would bare the burden.

Lol at your "levels" man.

5.5" is too big to fit in most people's pockets. That jumps from "easily" to "difficult."

Also, most people would agree that 4.7" is a pretty good amount of screen real estate to do what they want to do with their cell phones.

The OP is a weird MoFo:confused:

Not unusual among a bunch of :apple: fanboys, some of whom have :apple: as part of their forum name.

OP however is taking weirdo to another level.

Your level of deranged obsession with the phone choices of others is something you should seriously seek treatment for.

I came in here hoping to get my snark out, but seriously. I hope you find a therapist that can help you get past whatever little gremlins live in your head and make you this outrageously obsessed with what phones people pick for their own personal use.

You're in this thread posting long, multi quote, nonsensical arguments, scales, and going on and on about a phone that likely doesn't even exist in an attempt to evangelize those who don't want a phablet. That's not healthy, and isn't helping you in any way whatsoever.

"Please just try it"? Can you possibly be serious? Unless you rely on Apple stock for food, I can't begin to imagine why you would bother trying to convince total strangers to try a hypothetical telephone.

The granularity of geekdom on these boards is pretty amazing sometimes.

This. Once it's past pocket size (which every 5.5" phone I've seen is - and I can't imagine how apple could solve that problem) then it's "need-a-bag" size. At which point why not an iPad?

The OP assumption has so many flaws

(i) Many people will always choose the one handed convenience over larger screen estate. The 4.7 -5 in is the perfect sweet spot for easy one handed use. Also, not all of us have gigantic hands and fingers to deal with a 5.5 inch one handedly

(ii) The OP is somehow desperate to convince everyone that when you are "out" you need to look at a larger screen for more "vibrant" effect. He doesn't understand that not everyone treats phone as their all in one device. Some just message, call and check tapatalk among other activities. Rest of the really enjoyable activites i.e. gaming/movie watching/browsing many prefer to do on tablets either at home or even when "out".

(iii) OP's quote - "After a few weeks it will be impossible to look at a tiny 4 inch screen and want to even use it or barely look at it!" . Absolutely balderdash. I have known people who moved back to the smaller inch as the bigger phone was uncomfortable in pockets and in hands.

That's my situation and I agree, its not a one way street.

I went from an iPhone 5 to an Nokia Lumia Icon and back to the iPhone 5c. True, the 5c felt tiny in my hands when I first got it, but after about 20 minutes of using it, I was used to the screen size.

While I am a fan of the larger phones, I am very happy with the iPhone 5c.

My old 4.8" Galaxy S3 was quite easy to use with one hand, which is how I mostly use my current iPhone 5s, but 5.5" will not be.

For me there would have to be some other benefit besides the large screen.. like better battery life.

You seem pretty obsessive over this.

Here's an idea that'll suit everyone... You get what YOU want, and we'll get what WE want. How's that sound?
